Speaker motivates students
By Trevor Rosato
Ed Gerety, a certified speaking professional,
recently spoke to students
about living life with kindness and respect for one
another, a message that
really hit home with some
students.
Prior to hearing
him speak, students walked
the halls chatting and commenting on how boring they
expected the presentation
to be. How many students
really felt that way about it
after hearing Mr. Gerety
speak? Not many; in fact,
students were very excited
after the first presentation.
Students who attended the
second presentation were
even more excited before
the presentation was even
Ed Gerety
under way, mainly because
they had heard good things the earlier presentation.

his Mama had anything to do with it, but
seven years ago Tyler Waltz started in the
rodeo scene. But even more recently, Tyler has brought home five wins at the High
School Rodeo at the Farm Show Complex
in Harrisburg.
Tyler placed first in bareback,
steer wrestling, saddle bronc, saddle
bronco, and team roping. He also took
second in bareback and third in steer
wrestling. His favorite event? Bull riding.
Tyler says he enjoys competing at the

BMI Letters
Classrooms of the Future
By Kylie Starr
By Macey McBryan
Many of the students at Jersey Shore
Senior High have recently received the infamous
BMI (Body Mass Index) letters. BMI is a statistical measure of the weight of a person which is
scaled according to the individual’s height. An
individual's body weight is divided by their height
squared. BMI tells if a person is starving, underweight, normal, overweight, obese, clinically
obese, or morbidly obese. This form of weight
measure also informs people of their height and
weight ratio.
This year the high school started to send
these BMI letters home to inform the students
and their families about where the students stand
on their weight. Many students were offended by
this gesture. The district started sending these
letters out with elementary schools, next to the
middle school, and now finally to the high school.
It is a state mandated law that all schools in
Pennsylvania must send out these BMI letters.
Many students were upset about what
these letters said about their weight. A lot of students thought that their BMI was completely
wrong, while others were fine with what it said.
Some already knew what the letters were before
they received them and others had no idea and
were completely surprised. “I think the school
should be more worried about our grades than
our weight,” said Justin Kontz (11). Many of the
students did not agree with the results, many
said students were overweight when clearly they
do not look it. Jess Sweet (10) said that it wasn’t
appropriate for the school to send the letters
home, because, “There are people out there with
low self esteem.” Mrs. Burke, the high school’s
nurse, has said that students can have their BMI
redone. There is also counseling available to
students.
Whether you may think your BMI letter
was accurate or not, we as students will have to
get used to this because it is a state law and the
school has to send these out. Next year more
information will be sent out with the BMI statements.
Walking into most classrooms this year, it’s hard to miss the
new addition that’s taking up wall space. The addition of Promethean
Boards along with interactive projectors, teacher laptops, 360 student
laptops, and 12 laptop carts came from the Classroom for the Future
grant, given to the school along with about 300 other school districts in
Pennsylvania, according to Mrs. Mary Hopple, who is the Classrooms
for the Future coach and also a science teacher at the senior high.
Last year, only math and English teachers received the technology from the grant. This year however, the science and history departments were added to the list along with four special education
teachers, Mrs. Hopple explained.
With this new technology came a burden to the teachers that
were affected by it. Every teacher using the boards has to take 30
hours of professional development a year, Mrs. Hopple said. These
classes, named Authentic Learning in the 21st Century, teach the
teachers how to use the new technology in their classrooms. Some
teachers have changed their lesson plans to fit the new additions in,
but others go on exactly as before. Nothing drastic will be happening
immediately because as Mrs. Mary Hopple put it, “change takes time”
and it will take a while for everyone to get used to the new additions to
the classroom.
Skills USA
By Jimmy Smith
On January 25th, the Jersey Shore Area Senior High School
hosted the Skills USA region competition, and many of our students
did well enough to advance to state level competition. For the uninitiated, Skills USA is an organization that is designed to prepare students for working and competing in the world market. The events
ranged from Food and Beverage Services to Computer Repair.
Chad Hillyard (12) took first in Computer Maintenance, and
Alex Nidetch (12) took first in Internetworking. Codi Costa (12) placed
first in Photography. Cortney Rishel (11) placed second in the Job
Interview competition, and Malori Richards (12) placed first in Customer Service. Brad Ungard (11) received honorable mention in Culinary Arts, while Rick Englert received honorable mention in Precision
Machine. Jordan Welshans (12) placed second in the Automotive Service Technology contest.
“Skills USA is a great opportunity to meet other students and
see other schools,” explained Mrs. Boncal. Mrs. Boncal and Dr. Chappel started our school’s involvement in the program in (Cont. on pg. 3)

1999, when many of the new Career Technical Education
(CTE) programs were introduced into our curriculum.
“The competition was a lot different than I anticipated. It was super fun!” stated Nicole Treas (12). Nicole
competed in the Food and Beverage competition, and took
3rd place. Treas plans on studying psychology at Mansfield.
Skills USA is a great program that can help prepare
you for the future. If you are interested in becoming involved, make sure to stop by and ask Mrs. Boncal or Dr.

biggest rodeo of the year. “Everyone
that competes all year go to the state
finals (in June), but only the top four in
every event go to Nationals. Right
now I’m sitting really well in all my
events.”
Tyler’s next competition is in March at Horseheads,
NY. Further into the future, Tyler is planning on going to
college first, but then taking up riding professionally.
Motivational Speaker: Ed Gerety
(Cont. from front pg.)
There were some students who were truly
touched by Mr. Gerety’s words.
Abe Williams (10) felt that Ed Gerety
touched on important issues, like people discriminating against others. “That’s what really meant a
lot to me, is he didn’t just talk about drugs,” Williams said.
There were others that didn’t enjoy the
presentation as much, however.
“I felt he didn’t really motivate us, he didn’t talk about anything motivational,” commented
Noah Hibbler (11).
In high school, Mr. Gerety was captain of
his football and baseball teams, a member of student council, S.A.D.D., and F.B.L.A. and many
other youth organizations.
Mr. Gerety graduated from the University
of New Hampshire, but during his junior year in
college decided speaking professionally is what
he wanted to do for a living. At the age of 22 he
established his own business: Gerety Presentations. He has now traveled and spoken in all 50
states, parts of Europe, and in Canada.
The presentation for most of the students
was a huge success and they found it serious but
funny, a good time, and a valuable experience.

PSSA’s
By Mariah Sortman
Everyone in eleventh grade knows the dreaded
acronym PSSA. But the truth is do we really know the
story behind this hated acronym? What do the people in
guidance think about this test?
All people in eleventh grade are required to take
the PSSA’s. The PSSA (Pennsylvania System of Schools
Assessment) is a standardized test administered in all
Pennsylvania public schools. These tests for juniors consist
of mathematics and reading comprehension in the first two
weeks of April. The writing PSSA’s are coming up Valentine’s Day week and consist of multiple choice and two writing prompts. In the end of April the new science PSSA’s
will take place. If the student does not make proficient or
advanced in mathematics and the reading comprehension
they will have to take remediation on Accelerated Reader
days. But what about preparing for these mandatory tests?
“Keep doing the best you can in all your classes,
“Marty McCormick, a guidance counselor advised, “Also
use the sample booklet you can get from the SAT tests.”
“Get a good night’s sleep and eat a good breakfast,” Mrs. Thomas, the principal, added.
McCormick’s view on the PSSA’s is surprising. “It
is mandatory for schools and getting into college. But we
put too much testing into our criteria. We should focus
more on effort and the grades in the normal classes. These
tests compare one student to another.”
Thomas’s views on the PSSA’s were quite different
than McCormick’s.
“We put a lot into the testing but it is cumulative.
We don’t have the same standards in every state. But we
only had 12 students last year not make proficient. So we
are doing something right.”
So when you sit down at your desk with your number two pencil, keep these things in mind: it is a mandatory
test but as long as you do your best, you will be fine. And
no matter how much you may hate them, just remember
you already went over this stuff in class. As long as you ate
a good breakfast and slept well, you will do fine.

Officer Hummer explained that he is here to be

their mouth… and out comes one of the corniest, goofiest, stupidest pick-up lines you’ve ever heard. Do you

“Hey, something’s wrong with my eyes; I just can’t take them

Many pick-up lines are listed below; some are

We highly recommend that none of these “pick up lines”

Personally, I think that it is a B.S. holiday; it’s not
real. Schools do not have off, post offices do not shut

playing a real set of drums. Keeping the beat in Rock
Band via playing the drums is probably the most difficult
instrument to play in the game, but it is one of the most
rewarding experiences in a video game.
The graphics in the game are obviously not the
emphasis of the game. You can see the reason why Harmonix did not bother to make their characters and environments photo-realistic, since you are constantly focused
on the fret board, or you are busy with singing a song.
However the art style in the game is very good. You can
customize your digital dude to look like a heavy metal
head-banger, or a tree-hugging hippie. The art style in the
game is enough to get it’s players into all of the action that
is going on in the game, but at the same time it is never
too distracting.
Audio is obviously the main component of the
game. All of the master tracks and covers sound great.
The Rolling Stones sound like they did before they turned
400 years old, and even the edited or clean versions of
songs sound really well done. Obviously if you don’t like
rock music, you probably won’t like Rock Band, so you
may just want to buy Avril Lavingne’s newest album. I
hear it’s really mediocre.
So everything I mentioned so far sounds like praise, but
the game does have some silly flaws. For instance, if you
have a Guitar Hero II or III guitar lying around, you can
use it for the Xbox-360 version, but if you have the PS3
version, the guitar does not work. The online community
is also better on the Xbox-360 version of Rock Band, but
this difference is minute and un-noticeable to some. If by
some chance you own a PS3 (all

Editor’s note:
To all the “Lost” fans that are out there, “Cloverfield”

visible in the movie. If you’ve played the “Find 815”

the Xbox-360 version is slightly better for the aforementioned reasons. Also the guitar is going to breakdown
more times than Britney Spears at rehab. For some reason the “whammy” bar on the Rock Band guitar is prone
to breaking, and the kick pedal on the drums also is prone
to breaking. The durability of the said instruments is not
very good, so don’t even think about smashing your guitar
for a finale, because just sneezing on the guitar is enough
to break it into two pieces. Also, the game is pretty expensive. The bundle that includes the drums, a microphone and a guitar cost a full $169.99. Obviously the
price point is a hard pill to swallow for many individuals,

Finally, the roadies move the poster onto the stage, you can practically feel the energy in the room rise. The
time has finally arrived. Minutes later, my inability to actually pay attention has takes advantage me. Without noticing,
the band had already began to take the stage, waiting. The outside door opens and a single band member walks in,
shouting out an apology and something about being in the bathroom. Mayday kicked off their set with “Jersey,” a
kickin’ beat about girls leaving and the lies they told. They followed up with their hit single, “Black Cat.”
Deciding that we had spent enough time standing around, we decided to leave two songs into the set. Three
hours later, half a can of soda spilt on my shoe, soda soaked pants, and a mild headache we find ourselves leaving
State College and heading home.
I enjoyed the show immensely, and took away a new concert experience. Mayday Parade and the other local
bands have made their mark on me. They will definitely be on my list to see again.
