Youth Art Show and
Creative Collaborations
The Greene County Council on the Arts is proud to present
“Outside the Lines,” its popular exhibition of works by Greene
County students at the GCCA Catskill Gallery, March 15 through
May 3. An opening reception will be held March 15 from 2-4
pm, at 398 Main Street, Catskill, NY.

This annual youth arts show represents
a colorful cross-section of Greene County’s
pre-K through high school students and gives
our youngest artists experience exhibiting their
work in a professional gallery.
“Outside the Lines” is possible through the
generous devotion of Greene County art teachers. The students, families and the Arts Council are grateful for their tireless creativity and
efforts organizing several hundred student art
works. The show features floor to ceiling examples of portraiture, landscapes and abstract
experimentation in paint, pastel, printmaking,
photography and collage. Collaborative creations are popular in this year’s exhibit. Lisa
Wood’s Catskill Girls Club students are showcasing a hanging wire, paper and wheat paste
sculpture inspired by organic forms in nature.
Laura Anderson’s pre-school program at the
Catskill Community Center will include an exploration of mark-making with toy truck tires,
toy dinosaur footprints and other objects on
a large canvas. Ruth Leonard’s 4th grade students at the Catskill Elementary School will
premier field drawings that inspired their permanent installation of “Flora and Fauna Murals,” an Arts in Education project in collaboration with Larry Federman, field expert at the
Catskill Audubon Preserve. The show is made

of RamsHorn-Livingston Preserve
4th Grade students working on drawings and paintings of their
time on-location at RamsHorn-Livingston biomes. Drawings were
collaged together to create murals that will be permanently
displayed in the Catskill Elementary School Library.
A short walk from the Catskill Elementary
School is the RamsHorn-Livingston Preserve,
a sensitive ecosystem containing a wide range
of land biomes: forest, wetlands and creek.
Larry Federman, NYS Audubon Society educator, toured students at the site. Ruth Leonard, teaching artist, worked with students in 12
classroom meetings to create five 4’ x 6’ murals that illustrate the diverse plant and animal
communities with in the preserve. The five biomes depicted in the murals are: Upland/Old
Orchard (entrance to the sanctuary); Marsh;
Swamp; RamsHorn Creek and Upland/Forest.
Catskill classroom teachers linked in with the
study of various plant and animal adaptations,
as well as animal behavioral adaptations.
Students made individual and group
drawings from on-location photographs, guide
books, pressed plants, as well as freshly cut
and dried plants. Homemade black walnut
ink and twig pen points were among many
drawing materials used. Student drawings
were copied and collaged together to create
each murals composition, then adhered to
plywood panels for students to start painting.

HELLO MOLLY, GOOD-BYE FAWN
GCCA Welcomes Molly Stinchfield as Visual Arts Director
The Greene County Council on the Arts is thrilled to
welcome Molly Stinchfield as
our new Director of the Visual
Arts Program, managing the
Catskill Gallery and services
for artists. Outgoing Director,
Fawn Potash is passing the
torch in order to spend more
time in her studio and focus
on the GCCA’s Masters on
Main Street program supporting Catskill’s Main Street community development through
arts driven exhibits, workshops, festivals and events.
In her four year tenure, Fawn
has helped the gallery reach
out to a larger pool of artists
with exhibition ideas that delight, educate and challenge
our audiences. By raising the
profile of our gallery, she has
attracted additional funding
and collaborators for ambi-
tious projects like “Transmission”, “Whale Oil to Whole
Foods”, “Museum as Muse”
and “Define the Decade”.
Stop by the “Playing With
a Full Deck” live auction on
Saturday, March 8 from 5-7
PM to say hello to Molly and
good-bye to Fawn.
Molly was selected from
a pool of brilliant and talented candidates, chosen for her
passion and commitment to
artists and creative community building. Molly is an artist,
educator and community arts
organizer, living in Greene
County. She is the Co-Founder and Director of Programs
at Freehold Art Exchange,
an artist residency program
for artists with social and critical art practices. She received
her BFA from SUNY Purchase
and her MFA from California

Ruth Leonard, GCCA
Sprouts Director for 18 years,
completed her last six sessions
in the summer of 2013. As always, Ruth did a fabulous
job with the program and,
with the help of Marcia Witte,
raised more money than ever
for the summer 2013 program.
We shall miss Ruth in her capacity as Sprouts Director
and take heart knowing that
we will still see her frequentLook familiar? Dale Loughran

She has received grants
and scholarships from CalArts, the Lower Manhattan
Cultural Council, the Manhattan Graphics Center, and
Richard and Dolly Maas. Her
work has been exhibited in

and creating opportunities for
underrepresented artists in alternative spaces are essential
to her art practice. She is particularly excited about meeting the member artists in our

New Directors…One Sprouts Leads to Another
ly as a teaching and exhibiting artist. The torch is being
passed to mother and daughter team, Donna Trunzo and
Dale Loughran, both of whom
have taught in our Sprouts
program.
Ruth
Leonard
helped build the program for
18 years, and both Donna and
Dale plan to continue her legacy. They want to wish her well
and thank her for her support
and help with the transition.
Welcome Donna and Dale and
thank you Ruth!
As Co-Director of Sprouts,
Donna Trunzo brings to the
program over 27 years of experience in education. She
teaches in the Cairo-Durham
schools and has been a Sprouts
instructor for 15 years. Donna
is also a musician, director,
and choreographer. As a big
fan of the Sprouts program,
Donna recognizes it as a great
resource to the families of
Greene County. The program
uses the arts as an avenue to
develop creativity and problem solving skills. Through
creative play, cooperative
learning, and an atmosphere
that is fun and encouraging,
children have the opportunity
to work with local artists and
teachers of the arts in a safe
and welcoming environment.
Dale Loughran joins Donna as co-director of Sprouts.
She is a staunch ambassador
for the program. After all, she
grew up with Sprouts. Beginning as a student in the Art
and Music program at the age
of five, she continued attending Sprouts every summer until she aged out at the ripe old
age of seven. Dale decided to
be a volunteer teacher assistant for the program, which
she did summer after summer
until Ruth Leonard hired her
to teach dance for the program. Dale is now an elementary education teacher and a
dance instructor. She would
like to thank Ruth for all the
wonderful memories both at
Sprouts and in her art classes.
As they say, “[Ruth] will
be a tough act to follow.”

THE BIG WINNER
Texas Hold ‘Em Charity
Tournament Raises Funds for
Program Development
On February 8th GCCA
hosted a Texas Hold ’Em
Charity Tournament as part
of the Playing With a Full
Deck Exhibit Fundraiser to
support its Visual Arts Program. The very chilly temperatures brought more than
20 players to the gallery for
an evening of high stakes and
fun! To get into the game, all
one had to do is purchase a
Pocket Size Collection of Playing With a Full Deck playing
cards. The rest was up to luck
and skill. The generosity of
local Greene County friends
and businesses provided the
atmosphere with pizza, beer
and great prizes. Ed Reisner
was the evening’s big winner
and GCCA member Terry DePietro took home the prize for
the evening highest hand. But
the big winner was the GCCA
Visual Arts Program. Funds
raised will go to the development of programming for
artists. This special evening
was made possible through
the planning and guidance of
the Mike DePietro and Sam
Pratt with Daniela Marino
Goldberg, Jeffrey Miller and
Jason Pincus who worked
together as The Poker Committee. Very special thanks to
Mike DePietro and Sam Pratt
who donated their expertise,
organized the event, brought
their poker chips and acted as
excellent dealers on the night
of the tournament.

Let’s Get Moving With the Arts!
GCCA Sprouts Registration Begins May 5
Registration will begin on Monday, May 5 for Sprouts, the
Greene County Council on the Arts’ free summer arts program
for children ages 3 to 7. Workshops will be held throughout
Greene County with locations and with dates in July and early
August to be announced. Continuing on the success of last
years’ theme “Healthy Children/Healthy Families” exploring
the arts through an understanding between good health and
good food, the 2014 programming will delve into the benefits
of physical activity and its connection to the creative spirit.
Artistic expression through movement and dance coincides
with the art of healthy minds and healthy bodies making art!
Sprouts offers two separate programs for children to choose
from, one in Art & Music and the other in Theater & Dance. Both
programs run Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 11:45
a.m., with a healthy break between sessions. Sprouts limits the
two 45-minute classes to 15 children each, allowing for lots of
individual attention. Children enjoy a nutritional snack and a
chance to move about between workshops. Register early, by
calling the Greene County Council on the Arts at (518) 943-3400
on May 5 or after. GCCA will send a letter confirming your
registration. Registration fills quickly.
Sprouts teachers are professional artists who work in a variety
of disciplines, many of whom live and work in Greene County.
All have talent and experience in working with children and
understand the importance of positive early learning. Children
and their parents in advanced registration choose between the
Art & Music program and the Theater & Dance program. The
programs continue with the same two teaching artists for the
entire week. Every child takes part in the creative process and
is encouraged to invent, persevere and enjoy success through
experimentation, problem solving and setting reasonable goals.
Our outstanding teen volunteers serve as role models, and
many of our former Sprouts students assist in Sprouts, resulting
in a program that serves many age groups in the community.
Dale Loughran is living proof the enduring spirit of Sprouts.
As a young child she was Sprouts student, as a teenager she
returned to volunteer, set off to college and received a degree
in education and is now a Sprouts Director!
Greene County teens, Sprouts needs you! Are you
interested in working with professional artists, helping teach
young children dance, theater, music or art? Sprouts invites
any Greene County teen or pre-teen interested in volunteering
for our summer workshops to call Sprouts Program Directors
Donna Trunzo and Dale Loughran at 518-622-2585.

Call for Volunteers!
A lot is happening at the Greene County Council on the
Arts and we hope you will join in with our service to
the community. Greene County Council on the Arts
seeks individuals who are interested in becoming more
involved and volunteer on a regular schedule. This is a
great way to meet interesting people, feel engaged and be
an ambassador to the arts and culture of Greene County.
Here is where GCCA needs your help:
Do you like people? Become a Gallery Receptionist
at the GCCA Catskill Gallery. This position offers an opportunity to meet and greet people and introduce visitors
to the gallery exhibits. Also requires answering phones
and some light office support. Four hours shifts needed
on Fridays and from noon to 5 PM on Saturdays. Weekly
commitment preferred.
Do you like food and spirits? Become an Opening
Reception committee member! Volunteers needed to
share their own culinary arts, prepare or set up light refreshments at GCCA Opening Receptions. Most receptions take place on Saturdays in the afternoons or early
evenings. This is a great way to meet artists and mingle
with members and friends. Opening receptions generally
take place every 6-8 weeks.
Do you have gallery experience or program development experience? Become a member on the Visual Arts
Committee. Seeking professional artists or those who
have experience as a curator, art critic or development in
artist business programs for the Visual Arts Committee
to assist the Visual Arts Director with GCCA exhibition
schedule. The Visual Arts Committee generally meets on
a bi-monthly basis. Also seeking volunteers with gallery
experience who are available to assist in mounting and
dismantling exhibits.
Do you like to plan fundraisers or participate in special events? Meet the challenge from the first step in planning to the days following a special event. Work alongside dedicated staff, GCCA Board, members and friends.
GCCA special events provide a great sense of duty and
accomplishment to the accessibility to the arts and culture
in Greene County. Working on fundraisers is also a great
way to partnership with our local business community.
How about putting your past experience to work?
GCCA needs volunteers for mailings, technology support,
light maintenance and building repair at the GCCA Gallery
to drivers needed to distribute the GCCA newsletter, Arts
Alive, in the scenic mountain towns of Greene County!
Greene County Council on the Arts invites you to a
Volunteer Open House on Monday, April 7 from 2-4 PM.
Enjoy light refreshments and meet the staff, volunteers
and new friends!
Call Sharon at 518-943-3400 or email her at Sharon@
greenearts.org for more information and the benefits of
being involved as a volunteer.

Watercolor paintings by
Hudson Valley artist Karen
F. Rhodes will be on exhibit
at Kaatskill Fine Arts Gallery
at Hunter Village Square in
Hunter, NY through the end
of March. Karen’s brushwork
plays on the transparency of
the watercolor medium. A
former potter, Rhodes gained
an appreciation for light and
shadow in her watercolors
and now considers herself an
impressionist and a colorist.
Karen divides her time
between Suffern and Greene
County. She draws deep inspiration from her hikes in the
Catskills and the historic sites
in the area. Karen has traveled
widely to Europe, India, China and Patagonia where she
sketches on site but when she
returns to the Catskills she is
always inspired by the beauty
of the seasons here.
Karen received a blue ribbon at the Cultural Arts Association and her work has
been included in many juried shows. She is a frequent
exhibitor in the Windham

works on paper March 8 through April 28, 2014 at
the Cornell Cooperative Extension, Agro-Forestry Resource Center in Acra, NY. The exhibit will feature

that examine and simplify forms that become a kind
of iconic summary.

Is there really any “art”
to a martial art? One needs to
look no further than the painter, Harvey Konigsberg, Seventh Dan in the Art of Aikido,
and his latest progeneration,
Rivertide Aikido.
According to Konigsberg,
“Art should be a luminous experience for both the artist and
viewer. To create this experience in my work, I continuously strive to use movement
and form to reveal the unseen
world. To achieve this goal I
suspend the classical notion
of foreground, background
and subject to focus entirely
on the total interrelationship
of all facets of the world to reveal the elemental force of the
universe…”
Harvey Konigsberg studied painting at New York
University and the University of Miami. In 1965, he
began studying Aikido with
Yamada Sensei at New York
Aikikai. He devoted himself
equally to the disciplines of
painting and Aikido. A member of the Byrdcliffe Art Guild
of Woodstock, Konigsberg
founded Woodstock Aikido in
1987. The connections that he
and other local aikido practi-
tioners had with this art community enabled them to open
the dojo inside the beautiful
and historic Byrdcliffe Barn,
where art and Aikido have
continued to thrive for over
25 years. In addition to being
an internationally renowned
artist, Konigsberg is a Shihan,
master instructor of Aikido.
The Martial Art of Aikido truly does allow for individuals to express themselves artistically within it’s
techniques. This is especially
true in jiu waza, or freestyle,
wherein the Aikido artists are
dealing with multiple attackers simultaneously and must
weave their way through the
onslaught, drawing upon the
internalization of meticulously practiced Aikido techniques
and principles. This is not unlike a jazz musician drawing
upon a musical vocabulary
to solo, but at the same time
blend with the accompanying
musicians.
Aikido is the art of harmony with the universal energy,
or Ki, that flows through all
things. Most everyone, when
confronted with a “negative”
force, meets it with force,
such as striking, blocking or
grabbing out of panic. Aikido trains the mind and body
to be relaxed and move in a
positive, non-confrontational manner with an attack. A
practitioner, or nage, blends
with the momentum of ’the
other”, or uke, leading that
person safely into a throw or
joint lock.
These fused elements of
dynamic artistic movement
and self-defense are now being taught in the Village of
Catskill. Rivertide Aikido has
opened for classes at 8 West
Bridge Street, behind Moun-
tain T-shirts. Chief instructor
Patrick A. Gaucher and Assistant Instructor Arielle Herman
have been students of Harvey
Konigsberg for many years in
Woodstock.
Aikido
was
created
during the early 20th century by Morihei Ueshiba, who
synthesized his knowledge of
traditional Japanese martial
arts and Samurai sword work
to realize a truly harmonious
“way” to the martial arts. Ueshiba’s goal was to create an
art that practitioners could use
to defend themselves while
also protecting their attacker
from injury. He envisioned
Aikido as an expression of his
personal philosophy of universal peace and reconciliation. He became known to his
students as O’Sensei, which
means Great Teacher.
Rivertide Aikido offers an
opportunity for focused training in a relaxed atmosphere
that is welcoming to students
of various abilities, ages and
genders. They seek to share
their path of learning in the
”joyful and vibrant spirit” set
forth by the founder of Aikido. They welcome all visitors
to the dojo to watch a class
and ask questions.
They can be contacted at

Painting Above: Farmers Market by Kenneth Young, Oil on
Canvas, depicts the multitude of views and wonder found
on the streets of Hudson on any ordinary day in ordinary
time. The Columbia County Council on the Arts opens a
special exhibition “Streets of Hudson” on May 24
with a reception from 5:00 -7:00 pm.
The newly formed Art
School of Columbia County
offers its spring arts program
for adults starting March 27.
Classes are held at the Art
School’s building (Old Schoolhouse) in Harlemville. Weekend workshops and classes
offered during the day and
evening. Instructors include
Beth Thielen, Jerry Freedner,
Karen Hummel, H.M. Saffer,
and Scott Thomas Balfe.
On Thursdays, March 27,
April 3, and April 10, H.M.
Saffer offers a class on “Fundamentals of Painting”, a
basic introduction to the materials, techniques, and concepts of painting. The goal is
to learn how to control and
manipulate oil paints on canvas. Composition and color
control will be covered. His
class on “Intermediate Painting” is a further introduction
to painting, incorporating the
exploration of color, representation, abstraction and other
concepts and axioms of design. The class runs on Thursdays, April 17, April 24, and
May 1. All classes meet from
10am to 2pm.
During April 5 and 6,
a weekend workshop with
photographer Jerry Freedner offers a course on basic
instruction in using the Digital Single Lens Reflex camera (DSLR). Freedenr states,
“We will explore methods by
which we can achieve significantly greater creative control over our images beyond
the capabilities of a point and

shoot camera. We will also explore new ways of seeing: to
recognize, understand, and
refine our own artistic vision
through photography. It is
recommended that students
bring a digital camera that
could be set to full manual
mode.”
In an original design by
Beth Thielen, “The Pop-up
Case Book,” students will create their own journal or sketch
book which pops up out of
its case. Students will learn
paste paper, a sewn boards
binding, and slip case construction. Some bookbinding
experience is helpful but not
required. The class is offered
Tuesday evenings from April
1 to May 6 from 6 to 9 pm.
Hudson River School
Painter Scott Thomas Balfe offers a two-day Plein Air
painting weekend workshop
on April 26–27 to learn techniques used by the Early
American Landscape artists.
These painters used transparency to achieve the luminous
glow that cannot be attained
through the use of direct
painting and opaque colors
alone. This technique requires
a very limited palette and is
good for artists on a tight budget.
Beth Thielen also offers
two Monoprint Weekends:
April 12–13 and May 10–11.
Monoprinting is for any artist
looking to break out of set patterns in their work or to keep
their creative muscles limber.
Using an Ettan etching press,
the class will explore direct
drawing, the use of found and
cut templates, embossing and
ghost printing. The class will
use non- toxic oil based inks
that clean up with soap and
water.
In a three-day weekend
workshop, May 2–May 4,
Karen Hummel offers “Nature and Observation–– Intimate views in Graphite and
Watercolor.” Working from
objects in nature, participants
will do pencil drawings giving monumental importance
to the plant form specimens,
followed by paintings in watercolor? The class is meant
for those wanting to begin or
improve observational drawing skills and learn basic watercolor techniques. (Those
taking the class a second time
will have different exercises.)
Classes are held at the
Old Schoolhouse, 1198 Route
21cin Harlemville, at the junction where Harlemville Road
meets County Route 21.Next
to the Hawthorne Valley Farm
Store, the building is centrally located within Columbia
County, one mile from the

Thomas Cole & Frederic Church:
Master, Mentor, Master
The Thomas Cole
National Historic
Site 2014 Exhibition
Explores American Art
Through the Lens of a
Unique Relationship
The Thomas Cole National Historic Site is pleased
to announce our 2014 exhibition: Thomas Cole & Frederic
Church: Master, Mentor, Master. This never before presented exhibition tells the story
of one of the most important
teacher-student relationships
in the history of American
art – that between the founder of the Hudson River School
of painting, Thomas Cole
(1801-1848) and his student
– successor, Frederic Church
(1826-1900). The exhibition
will be on view from April 30
through November 2, 2014.
Curator, John Wilmerding,
Sarofim Professor of American Art, Emeritus, at Princeton University and former
Senior Curator and Deputy
Director of the National Gallery of Art in Washington, will
present a talk at 2pm on Sunday, May 18th to be followed
by an opening reception from
3-5pm. The exhibition will
be accompanied by a print-

full-color illustrations of the
artworks and an essay by Dr.
Wilmerding about this influential two year period that
first brought Church to the
Hudson Valley.
Thomas Cole & Frederic
Church: Master, Mentor, Master will be the first exhibition
to explore this seminal moment in American art through
the lens of the unique relationship between Thomas Cole
and Frederic Church. Their
student-teacher arrangement
grew into a life-long friendship between the two families, and later, the two historic
sites that bridge the east and
west sides of the Hudson River. Church, who evolved into
one of the most celebrated
artists of the 19th century and
later built Olana, was first introduced to the Hudson River
Valley as an 18–year-old when
he came to live and study with
Cole at the property known as

Greene County Council on the
Arts is pleased to announce the recipients of Individual Artist regrant
awards through the Community
Arts Grants Fund Decentralization
Program. The grants are competitive
and represent the presentation of
two $2,500 awards annually.
The Decentralization - Individual Artist Tier is funded by the New
York State Council on the Arts (NYSCA) to provide support for artists in
the production of new, original work.
The awards are intended to benefit the artist by creating a dialogue
with a community that inspires or
impacts the artist’s creative process
and by encouraging personal artistic
growth. Proposals are sought from
the areas of music composition, choreography, literary arts, playwriting,
film, and visual arts. There were several excellent candidates with imaginative ideas and high quality support
materials, making the 2014 review a
difficult process. After much deliberation, a panel of working artists from
Greene and Columbia Counties recommended Jill Skupin Burkholder
of Palenville (Greene County) and
Melissa Sarris of Chatham (Columbia County) as this year’s Individual
Artist Grant recipients.

In the painting process students chose and mixed colors
from primary to secondary
and earth tones. They gained
an understanding of cool and
warm colors and how to use
them to suggest space, while
layering color to create depth
and richness. In keeping with
the ecological theme, donated latex house paints were
used from sources where they
otherwise would have been
discarded.
The murals will be permanently displayed in the Catskill
Elementary School Library as
a reminder to all students of
regional plant and wildlife. In
a time when our young people
need to think creatively about
the health and maintenance of
our planet, learning about and
appreciating the natural environment is essential.
This project was made
possible by the an Arts
Education grant from the NYSCA Decentralization pro-
gram, administered in Greene
County by GCCA and the
support of the Catskill Central
School District

THE BINDLESTIFF FAMILY CIRKUS the Twin Counties’ hometown circus!
The Bindlestiff Family Cirkus suggests a dose of
vaudevillian variety to combat the mid-winter blahs. Taken as prescribed, Bindlestiff’s
unique and proprietary blend,
consisting of equal parts circus
skill, sideshow stunt work,
novelty turns, burlesque sauciness, physical comedy and
superb musical accompaniment, is guaranteed to induce
an altered state.
With upcoming performances on Saturday March
29 at 9:00 pm for adults only(doors open at 7:00 pm), and
Sunday March 30 at 3:00 pm
for families and all ages (doors
open at 2:30 pm), Bindlestiff
completes a luxuriously intimate 3- month winter residency at Helsinki Hudson, the
jewel-box music venue on located at 405 Columbia Street,
Hudson, NY. For tickets and
details call 518-828-4800 or
1-877-BINDLES. Tickets are
$20 and discounted to $15 for
clowns in make-up or costume (walk-up only).
Each
monthly
show
brought a new lineup of
Cirkus and variety arts stars,
with acts like trapeze, contortion, acrobatic balance,
sword swallowing, juggling,
physical comedy, and oddball
novelty turns. The Bindlestiff
stage is one of the few arenas
in the world where you may
see internationally renowned
street performers, featured
acts from Cirque du Soleil and
Ringling Brothers, and artists
made known by America’s
Got Talent - and local legends,
live, on stage, and in the same
show. Live music is a defining
feature of Bindlestiff’sWinter
Cabaret shows, with witty,
original tunes by a variety of
NYC’s best composers and
accompanists.
Bindlestiff’s
unique style reflects deep
roots in NYC’s underground
club scene, nods to political
street theater, and a steady
respect for the traditions of
American popular entertain-
ment and illegitimate theater.
The March 29 and March
30 lineups, presented by Ringmistress Philomena, feature
the award-winning magic and
mentalism of Torkova; stellar
aerial performance by Tanya
Gagne, also known as one-half
of the WauWau Sisters; and
other surprises. Bindlestiff’s
resident hobo Kinko the
Clown will be in attendance,
and of course, louché lounge
lizard Mr. Pennygaff will
amaze with his vaudevilllanous variety of esoteric skills.
Creating the soundscape of
the show will be one-woman orchestra Sabrina Chap
on keyboards and a mix of
noisemaking toys, kazoo,
and loop pedals. “Someone
once called me a mix of Julie
Andrews and Divine, which
I love,” says Chap. “I’ve also
gotten ‘Tom Waits with a hint
of Phyllis Diller.”
In
keeping
with
Bindlestiff’s clubby NYC
roots, the audience is encouraged to dress for festival and
be part of the glamour of the
evening. Those in costume or
circusy makeup can ask for a
discounted ticket at the door.
Perhaps you’ve got some top

The New York Times
said of the BFC Cabaret: “It’s
old-fashioned variety entertainment of the sort Ed Sullivan so astutely scooped up,
but with twists.”
2014 begins the 20th
Anniversary year of the
Bindlestiff Family Cirkus’ origins. Celebrations include
the 4th annual New York
City Unicycle Festival, a free,
multi-day even starting with
a mass unicycle ride from
Manhattan, over the Brooklyn
Bridge, and al throughout the
Borough of Kings to Coney
Island and culminating in 2
days of learn-to-ride activities
and unicycle games on Governor’s Island; the 20th Annual
NYC Cirkus Cabaret season,
which has provided a legendary stage for the world’s best
artists in circus, sideshow,

of Bindlesitff’s Cavalcade of
Youth, a professional mentorship and performance program for emerging circus artists under the age of 21; and

The Ghent Playhouse stages
HOW THE OTHER HALF LOVES
by Alan Ayckbourn
….Fiona is a bit bored.
Frank, it should be added, is a bit dim…
The Ghent Playhouse will
present Alan Ayckbourn’s
wickedly funny play, How the
Other Half Loves opening on
Friday, March 21 and playing through April 6. This is
the fourth play of The Ghent
Playhouse’s 39th season. The
production’s director is Sky
Vogel, who several years
back directed the Playhouse’s
smash hit musical Urinetown
in 2012.
Ayckbourn’s play deals
with the interlocking lives of
three couples: Frank is an upper-level manager in a nondescript business office. He is
married to Fiona. The two of
them are comfortable in life,
though Fiona is a bit bored.
Frank, it should be added, is
a bit dim. Bob and Terry are
a young couple with an infant
child. Bob works for Frank.
Terry spends her days writing
letters to newspaper editors
trying, without much success,
to right one or more of society’s wrongs. She could be a
better mother. Bob is sleeping with Fiona. Bob could be
a better husband.
In an attempt to provide
cover for a late night rendezvous, Bob tells Terry he has
been out offering counsel to a
co-worker, William, supposedly distraught because his
wife, Mary, has been having
an affair. This seems a little
more than odd considering
Mary is mousy, plain, and
meek. William, himself no
prince of partying, may also
be up to sexual shenanigans.
At least so suspects Frank,
who, as mentioned, is not the
sharpest cheddar in the pantry.
In an effort to manage
the situation, Frank invites
William and Mary to his and
Fiona’s home for dinner. Terry
also wants to ride to the rescue and plays dinner hostess
to William and Mary on a subsequent evening. During the
action of the play these two
dinners are simultaneous. Hilarity ensues.
Bob storms out to get
drunk.
Terry storms out
to get Bob. William’s buttoned-down composure pops
several buttons. Mary has a
most massive meltdown. Fiona discovers that cougars are
better left in Africa. Frank
considers early retirement.
Bob and Terry’s baby receives
his baptism by fire, otherwise
known as The Stage.
David Campbell plays
Frank and Prudence Theriault
his wife Fiona; Todd Hamilton and Christina Smith are
Bob and Teresa; and Sam Reilly and Amber Herrick are William and Mary.

about his abiding respect for Cole,
comparing him to a Turner or Constable.
Thomas Cole & Frederic Church:
Master, Mentor, Master is the 11th annual presentation of 19th century landscape paintings at the Thomas Cole
Site, an exhibition program that looks
to foster discussion and understanding of the influence of Thomas Cole on
American culture through a generation
of artists known as the Hudson River
School. Exhibitions and related programs enable visitors to see first-hand
some of the magnificent examples of
the style of painting that Cole is credited with launching, and to experience
the paintings in a residential setting as
they would have been experienced in
the period in which they were made.
The Thomas Cole Historic Site is
located at 218 Spring Street, Catskill,
New York. The main house, studio,
and special exhibition gallery are open
by guided tour Wednesday through
Sunday, from 10am to 4pm, April 30
– November 2, 2014. Grounds are free
and open to the public year-round.
The Thomas Cole Historic Site is
located in the scenic Hudson River
Valley, near the western entrance to
the Rip Van Winkle Bridge, with easy
access from the New York State Thruway exit 21 or Amtrak train service
in Hudson, NY. For information visit
www.thomascole.org or call 518-9437465.
Individual Artist Awards...continued from page 11
Skupin Burkholder began working in photography in 1985, studying
both traditional and digital processes.
Building on a history of experimentation with alternative techniques, her
recent work explores textures and surface dimension with bromoil and encaustics. The years 2010 – 2013 have
garnered Skupin Burkholder recognition including solo exhibitions at Gallery 308 (Muncie, Indiana); Gallery at
R & F Paints (Circus of Memories, Kingston, NY and Soho Photo, NY) and
group show opportunities in Garrison,
Woodstock, Troy, Westchester, and
Dallas, Texas. Awards include Best
of Show at the PhotoCentric Exhibition
in Garrison juried by Malcolm Daniel
of the Metropolitan Museum of Art,
NY (2009) and Second Place at Barrett
Art Center in New Directions, juried
by Joan Young, Associate Curator of
Contemporary Art at the Guggenheim
(2009). Her work is in the permanent
collections of the Houston Museum of
Fine Art (TX); the Wright Collection of
Texas Photography (Abilene, TX) and
the Harry Ransom Humanities Research Center (Austin, TX).
The $2,500 Individual Artist award
will enable Jill to develop a project
entitled Hidden Worlds in the Catskills
which will use a digital trail camera
to collect images of the region’s feathery and furry wild inhabitants. The
twelve 24” X 24” digitally manipulated prints will require several levels of
community involvement – from interaction with local hunters in decisions
about camera placement based on
field experience; hosting of a Facebook
page www.facebook.com/HiddenCatskills documenting the project’s
progress and challenges; evaluation
from photography peers in salon/presentation settings, and an exhibition.
Skupin Burkholder’s personal goal for
the project is to “take literal imagery
and transform it into an evocative, expressive” body of work by alteration
and the incorporation of public response and comment.
Melissa Sarris is no stranger to innovative collaborative projects. Equally fluent in fiber arts as well as the
construction of socially engaged installations, she holds a MFA in Sculpture
from the University of Albany and a
BFA with honors in Photography from
the School of Visual Arts. Human interaction, exchange, and curiosity fuel
her professional explorations whether
serving as three-dimensional design
instructor, nonprofit board member,
or artist.
Selected recent community-based
projects include Type A Letter at Dumbo Arts Festival (2013) which generated 300 letters in five languages in just
six hours; Drawing from Memory at CollarWorks Gallery (Troy, 2012), DUMBO (2012), and University of Albany
Museum (2013); and the Everyday Experts series in the Village of Chatham
(2010-11). Sarris’s $2,500 Individual
Artist award will support the creation
of Art Agency, a year-long “investigation and partnership with her community on the subject and contemplation
of Contemporary Art with a participatory/collaborative flavor that elicits
connection and exchange.”
Sarris’s projects are not objectbased but exist, not unlike theater, in
an ephemeral and experiential space
created by the artist. Distinct from theater however, Sarris’s environments
are animated by the dynamic architecture of outside engagement. Asked
to define her less common art practice
she states, “Authorship of the work is
shared, and participant involvement is
a necessary ingredient to the success of
each project.”
Components of Art Agency include
a contemporary art reading group;
Rethinking the Façade a series of temporary installations at the Bank of America; an audio and smart phone accessible walking tour generated from a live
storytelling event; and “Collections,”
an exploration of what we collect
and why. Agency is already well underway, with the reading/discussion
group on Contemporary Art launched
at the Chatham library. Sarris has set
up a blogspot - ChathamArtAgency.
blogspot.com for the project so interested individuals from anywhere
nationwide can login, follow its evolution and participate. Notified of her
award in mid-January, Sarris was avidly enthusiastic about its potential.
She envisions her community as “an
incubator and a safe place for experimentation, while offering the feedback
and discourse” she “needs to progress.”
Please join us in congratulating Jill
and Melissa and watch this space for
updates on their projects as the year
unfolds. For more information on

Betsy Jacks is Executive
Director of The Thomas Cole

she was Director of Marketing at
the Whitney Museum of American

ten years with over $4 million
in grants, public support, and
private donations. Under Betsy’s
and Lisa’s leadership, the site
has experienced rapid growth
in attendance, membership, and
support. In October 2004 Thomas
Cole’s “Old Studio” was opened
to the public for the first time,
following a complete restoration. In
2005 the site hired its first Director
of Education, and later that year the
Hudson River School Art Trail was
launched, enabling the public to
visit nearby sites where the views
depicted in Hudson River School
paintings can be seen. In 2009, the
site created a new short film about
Thomas Cole which is shown in
its visitor center, and an extensive
online education center at www.
explorethomascole.org. In 2010
and 2011, a $1 million grounds
restoration was implemented,
recreating the landscape features
of Thomas Cole’s time. The paid
professional staff has grown from
one person in 2003 to six in 2012,
and during the same period the
organization’s operating budget
grew nearly six-fold.
GCCA salutes Betsy and Lisa
for their extraordinary work!
