Our Lady of Peace Retreat Franciscan Missionary Sisters of Our Lady of Sorrows Fall 2016 Newsletter One Community in Mission Together Every six years our Community gathers for the General Chapter of Elections and Affairs. This is a very special time for all of the Sisters, not only for the decisions and business that is covered, but more importantly for the opportunity to be with the Sisters of our Congregation from throughout the world. Our General Chapter was a very prayerful and joyful event, helping us to look forward to the future with hope and enthusiasm for the many opportunities to expand our ministries in Evangelization. This year we were blessed to have two of our Sisters from mainland China join us. This was a first for our congregation, since obtaining Visas Sr. Lucy Chung, Sr. Maureen Theresa, Archbishop John Vlazny, is not always possible. Another first for us was Sr. Anne Marie Warren, Sr. Andre Lafferty, Sr. Carol Ann Kos the wonderful opportunity to have simultaneous translation for the Sisters whose first language is either Cantonese or Mandarin. Volunteer translators from Seattle and Beaverton came for all of our meetings and special presentations, even offering to take our Sisters from China, Hong Kong and Taiwan on outings to the coast and to the malls! This ability to understand each other through the translators brought awesome blessings to our Community. Before our Chapter meetings, Father Robert Carbonneau, CP, the Director of the USCCB China Conference, presented three days of conferences and reflections on inculturalization and the missionary spirit of both St. Francis and Pope Francis. Father Robert lived in the Hunan Province of China for many years…the same Province where our Congregation began. Bishop Peter Smith presided over the election of the Superior General on July 22. With great humility, I inform you that I was re-elected Superior General for a non-consecutive, fourth term. The General Council that administers the congregation with me consists of Sister Andre, the Provincial of the Oriental Province (and who was my Formation Director years ago); Sister Maureen Theresa, the new Local Superior and Formator at Our Lady of Peace Retreat; Sister Carol Ann, the Community’s Treasurer General and Local Superior at St. Clare’s Retreat in California, and Sister Lucy Chung, the Local Superior in Hong Kong. The General Councilors and I have been elected for a 6-year term. I want to personally thank all of you for your prayers and support of our Congregation and the ministry that we fulfill here at Our Lady of Peace Retreat. The sharing of your time, talents and treasures helps us to continue to provide a peaceful place for all to come to rekindle their spirit. George McInnis, CPM, Sr. Ann Shields, Fr. John Horgan with the Institute residents I n honor of the Jubilee Year of Divine Mercy (December 8, 2015 – November 20, 2016) promulgated by Pope Francis, the 43rd annual Institute in Catholic Teaching at Our Lady of Peace Retreat held in July focused on Christ’s teachings and actions of His Divine Mercy, and how Catholics can incorporate Divine Mercy into daily living. Each instructor focused on a different aspect of Divine Mercy, helping the students to expand their understanding of this awesome gift of God. Sister Ann Shields, SGL, (of the Servants of God’s Love) asked “How deep is my relationship with God?” and focused on each student’s understanding of God’s mercy in his or her own life. Reverend John Hogan from Vancouver, BC, Canada, focused his talks on the spiritual and corporal works of mercy, looking at them in new and challenging ways. Our third presenter, Reverend George McInnis, of the Congregation of the Fathers of Mercy (CPM), spoke about “Christ, our God-Mercy Incarnate”, sharing in his special way the depth and beauty of Divine Mercy that we can all practice daily. The Institute this year also hosted the live production of “Faustina: Messenger of Divine Mercy” directed by Leonardo Defilippis and starring Maria Vargo. The courses were recorded by Mark Gallant. If you are interested in purchasing these talks, please contact him by email at: [email protected] Sr. Ann Shields presents her evening lecture to a full house 2 Retreat House News 2016 BBQ Big Hit T Backyard Fun with the Sisters he 43rd Annual Our Lady of Peace Retreat BBQ was a huge success with the Sisters dishing up about 1,000 meals to the community and raising more than $25,000. God gave the BBQ a gift by dropping the temperatures into the middle 70s with occasional cloud cover and a random drop of rain every now and again. An anonymous donor paid for the meals of every Beaverton Police Officer who attended as a way of thanking them for the hard work they do protecting our communities. The Knights of Columbus were once again out in force serving pulled pork and grilling chicken, burgers, veggie burgers, hot dogs and brats. Others were boiling up the fresh corn, and over 100 volunteers helped out dishing up sides, buns and plates, condiments and lemonade, washing up in the kitchen, tending to booths, selling tickets, manning the DJ booth, and running errands. Entertainment included a return of the Mellotones, Zumba and, after taking a year off, the Hawaiian Dancer. The miniature horses were once again available for petting and for the first time the Beaverton K-9 Division attended, showing off his cruiser and his beautiful dog. St. Cecilia’s Respect Life booth was open for education, while the Franciscan Girls entertained young and old alike with games and face painting. The sweet tooth was satisfied by the Dibb sisters’ Widows of Zarapheth booth and the Knights of Columbus cotton candy booth. Everyone walked away a winner in fun and games, while a few walked away with door prizes, auction items, or were sweepstakes winners. Sweepstakes Winners 2016 Carole Miller of Sherwood - $250 Kirstin Bieren of Beaverton - $500 Deb Kovach-Leon of Portland - $1,000 In Gratitude E ach May the St. Pius X Women’s Club allocates funds raised that year to St. Pius causes as well as other local charitable organizations. This year, the Women’s Club voted to make a donation of $1100 to the retreat house. The donation was made “to cover expenses in repairing a life size, marble St. Joseph statue and for renovating pews and a skylight in the chapel.” Anne Cummings presented a check to Sister Agnes Clare, (see photo at right) who, with Sister Angela, were guests at the Donation Celebration, honoring all of this year's recipients. 3 Retreat House News A Friend of St. Joseph O ur readers will remember that a year ago we were shocked and sorrowful when vandals toppled our life- size marble statue of St. Joseph in the clearing near the Way of the Cross. During the fall, his head was severed from his body. St. Joseph’s body lay in the mud until spring when, thankfully, Fr. Gregory Dick, O. Praem., from the Norbertines, and his volunteer crew that was attending the men’s retreat managed to put St. Joseph upright and glued his head to his body. Don Rolison, who is on the retreat staff, spent a week this past July in the garage and out in the clearing building from scratch the beautiful cedar pergola pictured at right. Don used a picture he found in a garden magazine for his inspiration. The materials cost $500. Thank you, Don! Convent News O First Profession of Vows — June 5, 2016 n a sunny afternoon, amid soaring temperatures of 102 degrees, Sister Christine Marie Chauvel, with evident joy, professed her first vows of poverty, chastity and obedience here in the retreat house chapel . Archbishop Emeritus John Vlazny received her vows on behalf of the Congregation of the Franciscan Missionary Sisters of Our Lady of Sorrows. A reception followed the ceremony and we were pleased to meet several of Sister’s relatives who traveled from California for the occasion, in addition to greeting her family that lives in the area. Sister Christine Marie was born in Midland, Texas in 1961, and is the third of five children. Her father is a geologist and her mother is a retired school teacher and homemaker. Sister grew up on the West Coast, moving when the family was relocated by her father’s employer. Her early years were spent in Texas, New Mexico, Colorado, Alaska, and California. She graduated from California State University, Long Beach with a bachelor of arts degree in print journalism. Shortly after graduating, Sister Christine Marie moved to Austin, Texas where she took a position with an education corporation. After 9/11, she moved to Oregon. Because of a down job market, she lived with her sister and brother-in-law, Chris and Tom Morse, for several months while she searched for a job. Their one request was that she join the choir at Our Lady of the Lake parish (OLL) in Lake Oswego, where Tom was the choir director, as they were in need of sopranos. While at OLL she sang, cantored and eventually chaired the Liturgy Committee. It was while cantoring at a summer Mass in 2006 that she received her call to religious life. After much discernment, she believed that God was calling her to the Franciscan Missionary Sisters of Our Lady of Sorrows. She applied, was accepted and entered on Easter Sunday, March 31, 2013. Please keep Sister Christine Marie in your prayers as she journeys toward her final profession of vows in several years. 4 Convent News — Transitions S Trading Places ister Guadalupe, we hope that you are reading this in Canada and know that you are thought of. Your sunny smile and “holy”-spirited work ethic leave pleasant memories with Sisters and staff alike. Thank you for your guidance this past year and a half, May the Lord and his first disciple, Mary our Mother, bless abundantly your work in Canada at St. Paul Parish. W e welcome Sister Maureen Theresa returned from Canada on Sept. 8 who is assigned here as the Local Superior. Sister Maureen Theresa has been the Superior at both St. Clare’s retreat in Soquel, California and at St. Paul Convent in Richmond, BC. Sister also spent nine years of her religious life on mission in Shatin, Hong Kong. Sister Mary John Paul Floro returned from Canada where, among other duties, she was the Sr. Regina & Sr. Guadalupe Spiritual Director of the Junior together in Canada Legion of Mary and catechist to the Baptism, Confirmation and Sunday Preschool classes. Sister Mary John Paul has come back with her camera and artistic skills. The retreat office staff have her employed embellishing calendars and creating collages for the newsletter and assisting in the gift store on Sundays. Sr. Maria Benedicta, Sr. Maureen Theresa, Archbishop Michael & Sr. Mary John Paul Sister Maria Benedicta is the third Sister returning from Canada to Beaverton. She was Spiritual Director of the Sunday Senior Legion of Mary and a catechist for Prep. Grade 1 and Sunday Class. She will be assisting Sister Angela in the kitchen – the Italian/Bavarian combination benefits us all. Sister Angela’s Mediterranean cuisine now augmented by Sister Benedicta’s German spaetzi, strudel and braised red cabbage! Caraway seeds, anyone? Last but not least, we say a fond farewell to Sister Louismarie, who has been assigned to St. Clare’s retreat in Soquel, California. We understand that she is filling a great need in the retreat office there, working with Sister Vincent. Sister Louismarie was a paralegal prior to religious life. Her fame, when she was in our midst, however, was playing the organ and performing her personalized mariachi songs (for birthdays and feast days) on the keyboard. Skinner Jayme Navarra Florencia Navarra Curtis Young Sister Mary Colette Teng, OSF — October 15, 1925 - August 1, 2016 S ister Colette was born in Shantung Province, China on October 15, 1925. She was from a devout, old Catholic family and was educated through elementary and high school at a Catholic School in Quingdao, Shantung. The American Franciscan Sisters from Wisconsin staffed the school. As a teenager she became an aspirant for two years with that same community. However, during the turmoil of the Communist invasion of Shantung, in the mid-1940s, she became a refugee, along with those sisters. For some time she experienced the hardships of this status, traveling from city to city to find temporary work and food. Eventually, her community recalled only the professed members to the USA. At that time, Sister Colette was led to join our community, the Franciscan Missionary Sisters of Our Lady of Sorrows. In 1948, Sister Colette, as an aspirant, was in the first group who went to visit the origins and founder of our community, Bishop Rafael Palazzi, OFM, in Hengyang, Hunan, China. Coming with our refugee community to the USA in the early 1950s, she was one of the pioneer group that helped begin the retreat apostolate at St. Clare’s in the Santa Cruz Mountains of California. After becoming a US citizen in the late 1960s, Sister Colette was assigned in our Sanchung, Taipei Taiwan mission (a hostel for working women) at its beginning. She remained in our Taiwan Missions until 2010, when she retired to the Convent infirmary here in Beaverton. Sister passed away on August 1, 2016. Sister Colette showed great perseverance, loyalty and obedience during her life as a religious. Please pray for the repose of her soul. May she enjoy eternal beatitude! M Jayme Navarra — July 15, 1929 - May 5, 2016 Florencia Navarra — October 31, 1928 - September 12, 2016 any of our readers know Sister Agnes Clare who is in the retreat ministry here and the moderator of the Franciscan Girls Club. Lately, she has been relying heavily on her love of Jesus and faith in his mercy as within four months she has borne the loss of both parents. Jayme and Florencia Navarra lived in a small village on the island of Valencia in the Philippines. Jayme had been ill for some time and passed away on May 5 and then after a short illness, Florencia passed away on September 12. They were married 54 years, having raised four children, the youngest of whom was Sister Agnes Clare. The evening family rosary and other Catholic devotions were dear to this family. Although unable to attend the funerals herself, Sister Agnes Clare Florencia Navarra had the great consolation of having Sister Therese Improgo, who was on a home visit in the Philippines, attend her mother’s funeral on her behalf. Sister Therese had been in Bacolod City for the Golden Jubilee of Profession of her own sister, Sister Elizabeth of the Trinity, OCD, a Carmelite nun. With special permission, Sister Elizabeth was permitted to leave the cloister to attend the funeral on September 24 with Sister Therese, an added and unexpected blessing for all! 8 Retreat Schedule Retreat Schedule December — 2017 May 2017 OLPOLP Retreat Schedule December — May December 2016 – May2016 2017 2016 To Register for OLP-Sponsored Retreats blue) visit online www.olpretreat.org or To Register forregister OLP-Sponsored Retreats (in(highlighted blue)(in visit us online www.olpretreat.org or To for OLP-Sponsored retreats in blue), visit us usatonline at at www.olpretreat.org phone the retreat house at 503-649-7127 or email [email protected] or phone theat retreat house at 503-649-7127 or email [email protected] phone the retreat house 503-649-7127 or email [email protected] DECEMBER DECEMBER ((2016) ((2016) MARCH MARCH Saturday,3,December 3, 2016 Wednesday, March 1, 2017 Saturday, December 2016 Wednesday, March 1, 2017 ST.
