The White House Thursday 6th November FROM MRS KNOLLYS Dear Parents, from the Royal Borough of K&C. It has been lovely to see the girls come back into school enthused and refreshed after half term. They look so smart in their winter uniform which although I admit to some bias - I truly believe to be one of the smartest around. STAFFING Very sadly, Miss Graves, our Learning Support teacher, shall be leaving us at the end of term. I would like to thank her for all her hard work and wish her the very best for the future. Her immediate plans are to travel overseas. We welcome in her place Mrs Sarah Dennis, who comes to us from Emerson House where she has been teaching pupils with dyslexia and dyscalculia. Prior to that she was at Thomas’ where she worked as a class teacher for 17 years before leaving to further her career with SEN qualifications. We know that she will make an excellent addition to our staff and, as ever, she shall have a thorough handover with Miss Graves before starting in January. Two new gappers shall be joining us next term: Miss Georgie Proctor, who shall be with us for two terms, and Miss Lily Postlethwaite who comes for the spring term. The view from my study has also been enhanced over half term by the arrival of our beautiful new bench which the girls love to flock around at all times of the day. Thank you PA, for your generosity, it really is truly special. The coming weeks are jam packed with events; please make sure that you keep updated with them by checking the events list which can be found on the parent portal of our school website. I hope that you like our ‘new look’ White House, thank you to Ms Stevens for all her support in creating a new ‘Glendowerified’ version! UNIFORM If your daughter would like to wear ear-muffs they should be in plain school colours ie purple, grey or white and they should be worn as well as, and not instead of their berets. EBOLA Public Health England advises schools on the spread of infectious diseases.Their advice is that the risk of Ebola (which spreads through contact with blood or bodily fluids) arriving in the UK is low and that schools should not make changes to their usual routines. People travelling to and from affected areas are screened on exit and entry and in the absence of symptoms, are not infectious. However, in the unlikely event that parents or children are travelling to or from the affected areas, please let the school office know. Staff at Glendower have been asked to comply with this guidance. Please find attached a copy of a recent letter to all schools The White House RECEPTION SIBLINGS 2015 All siblings for Reception 2015 entry have now been allocated an assessment slot on Tuesday 13th January 2015. Congratulations to all these girls. They have a tough act to follow, with our prefects in the first half of the term being the best we have had since Mrs Knollys and I joined the school. We are confident that the girls appointed will serve as excellent role models and carry out their duties maturely and thoughtfully. Congratulations to Ella Eastwood for winning the Road Safety Calendar competition. Amaya was lucky enough to be chosen to be a mascot at a Champions League game at Chelsea. She had an amazing time coming on to the pitch with the players and soaking up the atmosphere in the stadium. It was made even more special as Chelsea won 6-0! Mrs Sharma House Point Certificates Very well done to Ella Eastwood, Delphine MattaBrown and Lucia Whitely who were each presented with a Bronze House Point Certificate just prior to the half term break. The certificates celebrate these girls achieving 50 House Points and they are the first pupils in the school to do so, with this new system being introduced in the Upper School at the start of this academic year House Points can be given by staff in recognition for excellent academic work and effort and also for fantastic behaviour and citizenship. We hope that many more girls will gain this award in the coming weeks and even go on to achieve their Silver (100 points), Gold (200 points) and Platinum (250 points) awards as the academic year progresses. If your daughter is in Y3-6 inclusive, do please take a look in the front section of her prep diary to find out how many House Points she has achieved and praise her for all the ones she has gained so far. Apart from the fun and community spirit, this event is about raising money for Glendower charities. Glendower has a longstanding relationship with Ambitious about Autism (Treehouse School), a school in North London, and has been supporting them for many years. The Parents’ Association wanted to give the girls a chance to decide on which other charities the Christmas Bazaar should support. So, on Tuesday we invited three charities to come to speak to all of the girls in the Upper School: Himalayan Youth Foundation UK: A charity which provides educational support for underprivileged and orphaned children in the Himalayan region Place2Be: A charity which provides mental health support via schools for in-need children in the UK, and Venture Centre: A community centre in North Kensington which supports the very disadvantaged children in the Golborne Ward. The girls listened to each of the charities explain why they needed money and to whom it would go. Everyone had the chance to understand a little bit about living in the Himalayas, having difficulties at school or at home, and living with very little money and few places to play. At the end, the girls were asked to vote on which charity they chose to support and the majority decided to support Himalayan Youth Foundation UK. We appreciate all of the charities coming in to the assembly and, after the Bazaar is over, the Parents’ Association will be sure to support all three charities, not just HYF. Thank you to everyone at Glendower who helped to organise this assembly: Mrs Walker, Mike Scott, Ms Nangia, Mrs Read, Ms Merhill, Mrs Stern-Ouakil and Mrs Limpenny. DEADLINE 14th November The White House www.glendowerprep.org 5 NETBALL MATCH VS NORLAND PLACE On Tuesday 4th October, the Year 6 and Year 5 A Teams took part in a Netball match against Norland Place. The rain was pouring down and we got stuck in such bad traffic that it took us 50 minutes to get to Holland Park! The girls ran onto the court and immediately started the game without any chance to practise yet were focused and determined from the first whistle. Well done to everyone in the Y5 and 6 teams who were able to show their skills and win even in the rain! Anna Pattle I am delighted to inform you that the Year 6 team played some beautiful netball, despite the awful conditions, and won 9-2. Additionally, I am thrilled to announce that the Year 5 team won their first game of the season! They should be delighted with the result and take huge confidence from their play. I would like to extend my thanks to Miss Humble for umpiring in such awful conditions, and the parents who came to watch and remained enthusiastic and encouraging throughout. Miss Probert On Tuesday 4th November, both Y5 and Y6 played a netball match against Norland Place. Both A Teams from each year participated, and overall we won! The score for Y5 was 2-1 and the score for Y6 was 9-2. It was a very successful match even though we played in the pouring rain and got soaked! Norland Place played well too, and at the end we were all rewarded with juice and chocolate bars. These were given by our opposing players (in my case, as I was wing defence for that match, my opposing player was wing attack. ) I think the match was played very well by Glendower. Most of our passing was direct and we did not have any loopy passes, apart from when Emma, Isabelle and Katinka were shooting goals! Good passing got the ball to the D very quickly and this enabled us to shoot frequently. I think we could have improved our game by taking our time, especially in one part of the game, when Norland Place had possession of the ball. This made Glendower panic and rush a bit. Overall, we played an excellent game, and everyone seemed to be cheerful while they played.
