Dear Wendy,
If you walk in this church on any given day, one of the first things
you'll hear about is mission. This is a church with a heart for the
world, a church with members who are (rightfully) proud of our
involvement and generosity. And part of that, of course, is our longstanding interest in the Dominican Republic. I have to admit that I
was rather nervous about my first trip to the DR - I didn't know many
of the people going. I didn't know the area, or the language, or even
what would be expected of me. Oh, and I also hate flying.
Before I get ahead of myself, every year a team from WPC travels
to the Dominican Republic for our adult mission trip. We send out
medical teams, construction teams, and a sustainable farming team.
The trip is an excellent opportunity to work alongside our brothers
and sisters in the DR and to see the impact of our ministry there. It's
time to start thinking about next year's trip - February 7-14, 2015.
It's an incredible opportunity - simultaneously challenging and
relaxing, frustrating and surprisingly easy. I needn't have been
nervous. It was a smooth flight and a transformative week with some
of the best people I know. I challenge each of you who take such
pride in our church to consider going with us in 2015 to Barahona.
The trip costs $800 for those who have never participated and $1,100
for returning participants. Send me an email...let's have a
conversation about it!
See you in the DR,
Leigh Stuckey

This fall, the Senior Choristers
(grades 3-5) at Westminster will begin
an acolyte program in our Sunday
morning worship services. The
tradition of acolytes goes back as far as
the Old Testament, as Samuel assisted
Eli the priest and Elisha assisted
Elijah. The word acolyte comes from
the greek word "akolouthos," which
means a servant or attendant who waits
on another.
At Westminster, acolytes will help us as we prepare for worship.
During the time of the prelude each Sunday, the acolytes will process
down the center aisle to light the candles on the communion table.
This should be an opportunity for us to focus on God's presence with
us as we begin worship.

Library Resource
The Muslim Next Door: The Qur'an, the Media, and that Veil
Thing by Sumbul Ali-Karamali (297 Ali-Karamali - New Titles Shelf)
This book introduces the values, practices, and beliefs of Islam,
discussing what it means to be a Muslim in contemporary American society,
and providing information about such topics as jihad, Islamic
fundamentalism, and women's rights. Ali-Karamali, an American Muslim
lawyer who also holds an L.L.M. in Islamic law from the University of
London's School of Oriental and African Studies, clears away
misconceptions about Islam and why they flourish: media distortion,
confusion about what is cultural rather than religious, the language barrier,
and old tall tales that still persist after thirteen centuries.
See also summaries of other titles on Muslim beliefs and values in the WPC Library.
