First Grade Learning Objectives
Phonics/Reading/Spelling
❏ Identify, read, and spell the names and sounds of all the consonants, vowels, blends, digraphs, and
compound words, sight words, appropriate to first grade
❏ Understand and apply various spelling rules, identifying some prefixes and suffixes and sight words
❏ Follow along, read aloud, and understand stories with pictures, including finding title, author, and
main idea using context clues and critical thinking skills
❏ Find the beginning, middle, and end of the storyline, understanding the theme or moral of a
passage
❏ Predict outcomes, and decide what the information in telling, inferring, and how to use the
message in life; using voice when reading aloud, knowing to stop at the end of a sentence
❏ Regularly use the school library and take a trip to the local public library
❏ Reading can be informative, research, and fun
Penmanship/Writing
❏ Forms letters and numbers correctly, using manuscript writing with an introduction to forming
cursive letters, words, and sentences
❏ Write declarative, interrogative, and exclamatory sentences that make sense, containing the
correct punctuation, spacing, capital letters, and ending marks
❏ Write sentences and stories in their journals and workbooks, that correspond to illustrations or
topics
❏ Write or categorize lists of words using organizational tools
❏ Learn about the writing process while researching a topic, using organization tools, writing a 5-7
sentence report, with illustrations and giving a class presentation
❏ Completing simple book reports and give oral presentations on them
Math
❏ Recite and write numbers to 200, place value, understanding before, after, and between numbers,
ordinal numbers, identifying number patterns, skip counting, greater than, less than, equal to,
number words
❏ Solving addition and subtraction problems to 20, single and double digit addition and subtractions,
with and without regrouping, including using simple story problems, and various math strategies
❏ Identifying plain and solid shapes, their properties, number of sides and vertices, position
❏ Identifying money, the values of each coin, and arranging coins to equal an amount given
❏ Identify time on an analog and a digital clock by hour, half-hour, and fifteen minutes increments
❏ Introduction to measurement; time, linear, liquid
❏ Introduction to Data and Graphs: Using Operations
❏ Introduction to simple Fractions and Probability

Bible
❏ Learn from the old testament: God created the universe and essentials for life including Adam and
Eve, Moses was used by God, Abraham trusted God, Joseph forgave, Ruth loved and served,
David was brave
❏ Learn from the New Testament: Jesus was with God and is God, who lived, died for our sins, rose
again to have power over death, for believers.
❏ Learn, memorize, recite, write about weekly, and apply Bible verses to our lives
❏ Attend weekly chapel, celebrates Christ-like character
❏ Read and highlight in our Bible; sing praises, pray in the classroom daily
❏ Understand it is by grace we have been saved, through Jesus Christ and His sacrifice
❏ Exercise kindness, love, and forgiveness to others
❏ Share the Good News of Jesus Christ to the world.

❏ Students research an Arctic animal. The write a research paper about their topic and present
their findings to the class and guest parents
❏ Students participate in the Reading Olympics and are encouraged to meet and surpass
individual reading goals ending with an Olympic Ceremony and presentation of medals
