Qualification: BTEC Level 3 with a choice of two different pathways
to follow…
Single Option - Certificate/ Subsidiary Diploma in Sport, or
Double Option – Diploma in Sport
What are the entry requirements?
5 GCSE’s at A*-C plus G.C.S.E PE at Grade C or above, or a BTEC Level 2 PE qualification at Distinction
Level, or Merit with a teacher recommendation.
Due to the nature of the course, you will be expected to play/ take part in sport on a regular basis.
An all round interest in most sports and physical activities is expected.
How will I be assessed?
All assessment is through coursework assignments, these can take the form of posters, powerpoint
presentations, oral presentations, practical demonstrations and more frequently written
assignments. Each Unit has 3 or 4 assignments and work will be expected to be handed in weekly, or
at the end of an assignment. There is no final examination on this course but numerous deadlines
that have to be met. Learners will also need to have well established IT and research skills.
Is there anything else I need to know?
Unit 13 can be combined with the Sports Leaders UK Level 2 qualification in Sports Leadership to
help gain an extra qualification. Our Sports Leaders usually have an opportunity to work with
Everton FC on the ‘mini-kickers’ coaching programme.
Facilities at Maricourt are very good with
a fully equipped Fitness Suite, Sports Hall,
Gymnasium, Dance Studio, extensive
playing field / hardcourt areas and a
classroom with one netbook per learner.
Any activities that we can’t host or offer
will be delivered off-site.

What will I Learn?
Year 12; BTEC National (Certificate in Sport) (QCF) 30 Credits, this broadly equates to 1
GCE AS Level. The learning aims are as follows…
Unit 1; Principles of Anatomy & Physiology (5 credits)
On completion of this unit a learner should:
1 Know the structure and function of the skeletal system
2 Know the structure and function of the muscular system
3 Know the structure and function of the cardiovascular system
4 Know the structure and function of the respiratory system
5 Know the different types of energy systems.
Unit 2; The Physiology of Fitness (5 credits)
On completion of this unit a learner should:
1 Know the body’s response to acute exercise
2 Know the long-term effects of exercise on the body systems
3 Be able to investigate the physiological effects of exercise on the body systems.
Units 1 & 2 will be delivered by the same teacher with Unit 2 being taught immediately after the
completion of Unit 1. This Unit contains a lot of the same content as the A Level Anatomy and
Physiology specification. Whilst this is mainly a theoretical unit, it does allow for practical activity.
Unit 3; Assessing Risk in Sport (10 credits)
On completion of this unit a learner should:
1 Know the key factors that influence health and safety in sport
2 Be able to carry out risk assessments
3 Know how to maintain the safety of participants and colleagues in a sports environment
4 Be able to plan a safe sporting activity.
Unit 7; Fitness Testing for Sport and Exercise (10credits)
On completion of this unit a learner should:
1 Know a range of laboratory-based and field-based fitness tests
2 Be able to use health screening techniques
3 Be able to administer appropriate fitness tests
4 Be able to interpret the results of fitness tests and provide feedback.
Units 3 and 7 allow for lots of learning outside of
the classroom. We visit a Gym to use specialist
equipment and carry out a real world Risk
Assessment.
We also have a guest lecture from a former
Professional Rugby player and Gym owner to help
learners with Distinction standard work.
In Unit 7, all learners will have to carry out a range
of Health and Fitness test on Clients before giving
feedback and an improvement plan.

equates to 1 GCE A Level. The learning aims are as follows…
Unit 8/9; Practical Team/ Individual Sport (10 credits)
On completion of this unit a learner should:
1 Know the skills, techniques and tactics required in selected team/ individual sports
2 Know the rules and regulations of selected team/ individual sports
3 Be able to assess own performance in selected team/ individual sports
4 Be able to assess the performance of teams in selected team/ individual sports.
Units 8 & 9 allow learners the chance to
demonstrate their practical performance in 2
Team, or 2 Individual sports (double option
learners will complete both units over the course).
All skills and performances will be filmed as
evidence of meeting the requirements.
We have developed an excellent relationship with
Everton FC and visit the academy to work with the
Performance Analysis Team and tour Finch Farm.
Unit 13; Leadership in Sport (10 credits)
On completion of this unit a learner should:
1 Know the qualities, characteristics and roles of effective sports leaders
2 Know the importance of psychological factors in leading sports activities
3 Be able to plan a sports activity
4 Be able to lead a sports activity.
To complete assignment 4 our leaners will visit a feeder primary school or work at an Everton FC
Academy event to gain the experience required to meet the criteria.
Unit 17; Psychology for Sports Performance (10)
On completion of this unit a learner should:
1 Know the effect of personality and motivation on sports performance
2 Know the relationship between stress, anxiety, arousal and sports performance
3 Know the role of group dynamics in team sports
4 Be able to plan a psychological skills training programme to enhance sports performance
Like Units 1 & 2, Units 8 and/or 9, the Psychology Units closely mirrors the content delivered on the A Level
Syllabus.
Progression
A number or previous students have used their BTEC Level 3 National Subsidiary Diploma in Sport
qualification to help progress to courses at Edge Hill and Liverpool John Moores University where
they enroled on Sports based courses.

Double Award Pathway What will I Learn?
Year 12 & 13; BTEC National in Sport (Diploma in Sport) (QCF) 120 Credits, this broadly
equates to 2 GCE A Levels. The learning aims are as follows…
Year 12 Units, credits can only be claimed at the end of Year 13 so learners on the double
award pathway must complete the 2 years course.
Unit 9; Practical Individual Sports (10 Credits)
On completion of this unit a learner should:
1 Know the skills, techniques and tactics required in selected individual sports
2 Know the rules and regulations of selected individual sports
3 Be able to assess own performance in selected individual sports
4 Be able to assess the performance of other individuals in selected individual sports.
UNIT 22; Rules, Regulations and Officiating in Sport (10 Credits)
On completion of this unit a learner should:
1 Know the rules, laws and regulations of a selected sport
2 Know the roles and responsibilities of officials involved in a selected sport
3 Understand the performance of officials in a selected sport
4 Be able to officiate effectively in a selected sport.
Unit 23; Organising Sports Events (10 Credits)
On completion of this unit a learner should:
1 Know about different types of sports events
2 Know about the roles & responsibilities of people involved in planning and delivering sports events
3 Be able to plan and promote a sports event
4 Be able to deliver a sports event
5 Be able to review the planning and delivery of a sports event.
Year 13 Units, still to be confirmed at this stage (first teaching from 2014-2015)
Unit 4; Fitness Training & Programming (10 Credits)
On completion of this unit a learner should:
1 Know different methods of fitness training
2 Be able to plan a fitness training session
3 Be able to plan a fitness training programme
4 Be able to review a fitness training programme.
Unit 5; Sports Coaching (10 Credits)
On completion of this unit a learner should:
1 Know the roles, responsibilities and skills of sports coaches
2 Know the techniques used by coaches to improve the performance of athletes
3 Be able to plan a sports coaching session
4 Be able to deliver and review a sports coaching session.
Unit 6; Sports Development (10 Credits)
On completion of this unit a learner should:
1 Know key concepts in sports development
2 Know the key providers of sports development
3 Understand how quality is measured in sports development
4 Know about sports development in practice.
