Meadowhead School – Transition Work – Y12 Chemistry 2015 Research how the model of the atom has changed over the years. You should include the ideas of Democritus, John Dalton, JJ Thomson (plum pudding model), Ernest Rutherford and Neils Bohr. You could also include more modern discoveries. You can produce your work in any appropriate way and must include sufficient detail for A Level. An essay, timeline, poster or comic strip could all be acceptable. You must be able to physically hand it in during your first chemistry lesson. Grade Grading criteria E Describe a simple model of the atom. D Describe the new theories proposed by the above scientists. C Explain the evidence these scientists had for their new models. B Evaluate how the work of Rutherford, Geiger and Marsden provided evidence against the plum pudding model. A Compare the modern ideas about atomic orbitals with simplified shells model you learned at GCSE. We will be studying this topic early on in Y12 but you will need to do your own independent research.
