The Process of Clothing By:Catherine Zhang What was the process of tanning hide? It took a long time to make the clothing because there was a lot of steps. First the Iroquois men had to hunt for the deer because clothing was made from deerskin often. The Iroquois also used birds and its feathers , porcupines for using its quills. Second the Iroquois men gave the women the deer so they could use its skin to make clothing. The reason why a lot of the clothing was made from deerskin is because deer was very popular. Third after the Iroquois men gave the women the deer and made it into deerskin the women would soak it in the animals brain (called tanning.) Fourth the Iroquois would put the deerskin on racks to dry. Then if it was not perfect then they would have to do it over until it was perfect. The Iroquois people also used glass beads that the Europeans gave them. 1 In the summer the Iroquois men wore breechcloth. Then when it got colder the Iroquois men would add deerskin. They would also add deerskin shirts , leggings , moccasins and sometimes fur robes. The Iroquois women wore wrap skirts , shirts ( that were also made out of deerskin ) , leggings and moccasins. Sometimes if the women wanted to decorate the clothing the women would add beautiful colored beads that the men had traded with the Europeans. What would the Iroquois men do with their skin? The men tattooed themselves with pictures of animals , birds , snakes or various geometric designs. What would women do with their skin? The women used a special type of red paint made from the bloodroot plant mixed with bear grease to put a round dot on each cheek , on their ears and where they parted their hair. The Iroquois men would often put the bear grease on their face , chest and shoulders. What would all Iroquois do to their skin? Both men and women would wear earrings , necklaces and hair ornaments from many natural objects like shell , bone , feathers , stones , clay and animal claws and teeth. What would Iroquois men do with their hair? Young men would often cut their hair or pull it out by the roots so that only a small round spot on the crest would remain. What would the Iroquois women do with their hair? The women wore their hair long and when working around fires , kept in a braid or bun in the back of their head.
