Clapping syllables in words means to clap

Clapping syllables in words means to clap (or
beat on a drum / tap on the table) in time to
the parts of a word.
e.g. caterpillar has 4 beats (syllables) cat-erpill-ar.
Try and find opportunities in the day to clap
out the words you use and ask your child to
have a go at clapping the word.
 In the supermarket. Every time you put
something in your trolley, clap out the syllables
in the word
 On the bus. Take turns to think of a word
and clap it out.
Why?
Children need this skill before
they can break down words
into parts to spell and it can
also be helpful when learning
new words.
