When they received the merchandise from their unknown source, they would always check to make sure that there were no hazards which the items may pose. One day a woman entered the store looking for something special for her daughter. She looked around and couldn’t seem to find anything but antique vases and old rugs. Eventually she asked the man at the register, “Do you have anything in stock that a little girl might like? Perhaps a doll of some sort?” Immediately the man’s face went pale, “I-I’ll go check in the back for you” he said. The man disappeared to the back of the store, giving the woman a creepy vibe from the way he had acted. A few minutes passed as the woman waited. She didn’t like the store, it made her feel… odd. I was as if she were being watched. Suddenly, out of nowhere, the man reappeared through the back door with a doll in his hand. It was an old doll, but still suitable for playing. It had red yarn hair in pigtails, rosy pink cheeks, and blue button eyes. It would have looked fine if it weren’t for one thing. Its smile looked more like a scar than a mouth. It was jagged and cooked, similar to a jack O’ lantern. Since the woman was in a hurry, she bought it and tried to quickly step out the door, but the clerk stopped her. He said, “Please ma’am, whatever you do, don’t leave her alone with it.” The woman didn’t think anything of it, she was just eager to leave the store and to get home. Once the woman finally got home, she presented the new toy to her daughter who instantly fell in love with the doll. She didn’t seem to notice the disfigured mouth. The woman prided herself for finding such a good gift for her daughter. Eventually she became tired and told her daughter it was time for bed. The daughter gave her a slight smile and said, “But mommy, I still want to play”. “Alright sweetie, but you need to go to bed in an hour,” said the mother. “Ok mommy.” And with that, the mother went to sleep. The woman expected her daughter to get tired and fall asleep playing with the doll, but she was mistaken. Her daughter stayed up all night playing with it... The next morning the girl seemed very content and pleased. Her cheeks were a rosy pink and they were full of happiness. The woman had prepared breakfast for them which they ate in silence. “Sweetie, I need to go to work today, you’re going to stay here ok?” said the mother after finishing her meal, “Ok mommy!” replied her daughter. After that the woman got ready she left for work. When she returned home, she was surprised to see that her daughter had done her own hair. Two pig tails stuck out from either side of her head. “Oh sweetie, did you do this all by yourself?” asked the woman. “No mommy, my dolly helped me.” The woman looked over and saw that her daughter was trying to imitate the doll she had gotten the day before. The rest of the day continued as the previous one. The woman went to sleep and her daughter didn’t. The next morning the woman noticed that there was something different about her daughter, but she couldn’t place her finger on it. It was something on her face, but she couldn’t figure out what. When she returned from work that day she figured it out. Her daughter’s eyes were brown the day before, and now they were a deep blue. She assumed she had just never closely inspected her daughter’s eyes before, or they were changing with the weather, or with her daughter’s age. Everything was fine. The rest of the day went on like the ones before; the woman went to bed and her daughter stayed up. That morning there was definitely something different about her daughter. Her hair was a fiery red. The mother was immediately furious that her daughter would die her hair without her consent. “Today was my only day off for a week and you decide to go and die your hair without even asking me!?” “But mommy, it wasn’t me it was—“ “No! Go to your room right this instant young lady!” The daughter sulked to her room, doll in hand. The woman waited about an hour until her anger died down. She decided she should go and apologize to her daughter for her harsh manner. She walked to her room and knocked on the door. No answer. “Sweetie, you can’t stay mad at me forever” ….. “Sweetie, I’m opening this door!” She carefully opened the door and screamed. Inside the room laid her daughter’s dead body. Red hair in pigtails, rosy pink cheeks, deep blue eyes, and a mouth carved into her face in the form of a jack O’ lantern... Sadie Hovey 9/15/15 The life of Poe Edgar Allan Poe is a writer who made some of the best fictional horror stories and poems such as: “Mesmeric Revelation”, “Tall Tale Heart”, “The Raven”, “The Black Cat”, and “Alone”. These stories are some of the most revolutionary stories of all time. In fact Edgar Allan Poe is considered the inventor of the horror genre, and has made a very large impact on today’s society. Everyone knows him as a “baggy eyed freak”, but he was very handsome and athletic. His life was rather full of sorrow and strange encounters. Poe’s stories were definitely some of the most haunting and odd stories, but nowadays they seem like children’s tales. His stories are legendary and scary in a different way. Some the horror elements are lost to our desensitized culture, but to those who are lovers of the classic horror genre, these tales are still amazing and creepy. In his lifetime he wrote many stories. One of the most famous is “The Raven”. This story was actually a goal for Edgar Allan Poe; he wanted to write a poem that was 100 lines long! In the end his poem, “The Raven” was 108 lines long and had 18 stanzas. He completed his goal before he died which was a great feat in his life. Poe was very proud of his accomplishment, despite the many losses he suffered in his lifetime. Poe’s life was a life of pity. First his mother died, and then his father abandoned him and his siblings. Later he married his cousin, who later died. These are a small part of the many horrible things that happened to him. He died 166 years ago on October 7, 1849. His death is still a mystery. There are speculations of how he died. Some people think he died of heart disease, or he committed suicide, or that he was murdered. No one can say for sure, except that his death was a huge loss to the world of literature. Only seven people attended Poe’s funeral, and his obituary was written by his enemy Rufus Wilmot Griswold. It said that Poe was a womanizing drunk and mad man who was addicted to opium. He said wrote that all his stories were of his darkest tails. All in all his life was full of hardship and sorrow, but there were some good aspects which will be remembered by society. His stories and name will be forever in history, and hopefully everyone will learn to appreciate and understand his art. Most of all, rest in peace Edgar Allan Poe. http://www.biography.com/news/edgar-allan-poe-death-facts https://www.poemuseum.org/life.php http://poestories.com/stories.php The Tomahawk Man vs. King of Horror Trinity Basurto 9/15/15 The two very famous horror story writers, Stephen King and Edgar Allan Poe, have written an array of chilling stories and poems. Both of these authors have made literature history in the horror genre, but who is the better writer? This is the debate many people have had different opinions on, and is something that is very hard to choose. Is the 19th century author who is cherished even after his death, or the modern day author who has earned many medals and had movies made based off his books the more influential of the two? Edgar Allan Poe was born January 19th 1809, and died October 7th 1849. He lived in Baltimore, Maryland. His house has been turned into a memorial and museum about his life. Poe is most recognized for his poem, “The Raven”, and “The Tell-Tale Heart”. He died over an entire century ago, yet he is still being read about by the young and old all around the world. He had great success with “The Tell-Tale Heart” which is taught in schools its psychological drama. It makes the reader feel every heart beat, and can be analyzed for its structure and word choice. His stories were composed so well that they still captivate the world today. Not many writers have achieved that level. To many people, Edgar Allan Poe is one of the greatest authors in the horror genre. Stephen King was born September 21st, 1947. He is currently 67 years old and he lives in Maine where most of his novels take place. King is also a horror story writer, and has written 54 novels, 200 short stories, and several more under a pen name. Many of his books have been turned into movies and many of his movies are considered horror classics. Stephen King has a very intriguing way of giving you the chills or making scenes seem so gory and gruesome your stomach hurts. This is an amazing attribute of an author but may not be suitable for all age groups. His books are for more mature people; you wouldn’t normally find “Under the Dome” (one of his novels) lying around in a middle school. He has dominated the horror genre of modern times and will continue to do so even after his death. Edgar Allan Poe is still being read about and taught in schools all around the world. He is being researched and written about every day. Even though he died, his name is still known by most people and his stories and poems are definite classics. Stephen King is a well-rounded author and he has written many novels. He is an older man yet he still publishes. Even though he can enthrall you in his stories, he isn’t for everybody. He is mostly read by the more adult age groups due to his very graphic scenes. Even though he is very successful, there is much debate as to whether his stories are classics. That being said, Edgar Allan Poe seems to be the better horror story writer because of his diversity of audience, his basic creation of the genre, and his influence. His influence has made a big impact on the world and he is a large part of the learning process in many schools around the globe. In conclusion, each of these authors has an amazing gift, and they both have become cult classics. Despite both of them having great achievements, Edgar Allan Poe is the better writer because of his wide-spread fame and his influences. He is dead but his name is still wellknown. This doesn’t make Stephen King any less important of a writer. Their styles are different which leads to different opinions, but in the educational world, Edgar Allan Poe is the true writer of horror.
