From the first day, Mandela protested about
conditions on Robben Island.
In winter it was so cold that the prisoners slept
in their clothes.
The electric light in each cell was never turned
off.
The prisoners were able to study, but their
families had to pay for the books.
Prisoners could have one visitor every six
months.
Mandela talked to Winnie through a window
while the guards stood behind them and
listened.
At first, the prisoners sang Xhosa freedom
songs, but the guards soon stopped them.

1 Mandela’s cousin Justice. His father, Chief
Jongintaba, wants to arrange marriages for the
two young men. Justice is thinking about the secret
journey to Johannesburg that he and Nelson have
planned.
2 Evelyn Mase, Mandela’s first wife. She has decided
that their marriage is over, and is about to leave their
home in Orlando West.
3 Nelson Mandela. He is working underground for the
ANC and MK, disguised as a driver and using the
name David Motsamayi. The police have identified
him and are about to arrest him.
4 Mandela’s daughter Zindzi. She is about to read a
statement prepared by her father to a large crowd
in Soweto stadium. Mandela, who is in Pollsmoor
prison, has been offered his freedom if he stops
using violence.
