JOB DESCRIPTION: Library Assistant
General Functions:
The Library Assistant’s role is to assist the Librarian in the running of the library and to be responsible for the
library in the Librarian’s absence.
Responsibilities/Key tasks:
1. Day to day library organisation
A. Keep the library stock tidy and in strict order on the shelves
B. Shelve all returned resources
C. Keep the library tidy
D. Keep the computers and the printer functioning and stocked with toner, paper etc.
2. Prepare new stock physically for the shelves – cover and label books, DVDs CDs etc.
3. Photocopy and file newspaper clippings
4. Keep clippings files in strict alphabetical and date order
5. Upload lecture readings to DIVA (the college’s virtual learning environment) and keep the CLA report
worksheet up to date
6. Update DIVA as needed
7. Help carry out annual stock take in the third term
8. Carry out work for the Registrar, Head of Learning & Teaching and other staff as needed after all
library work is completed
9. Assist the Librarian in all aspects of the smooth running of the library
10. Run the library in the Librarian’s absence A. Oversee the use of the library, so that nothing is stolen or damaged
B. Circulate library resources
i. Loan and return books
ii. Levy fines
iii. Loan CDs, DVDs, videos in house
iv. Loan CD players, IPod docks etc.
v. Loan cameras etc.
C. Help students in all aspects of library use including locating information in books and
journals, online and in the International Bibliography of Theatre and Dance and on DIVA
D. Help students with word processing and bibliographic referencing in the Harvard Style
E. Help students with printing and photocopying and the use of VCRs, DVD players and
video editing
F. Keep order and maintain a suitable environment for study (including keeping the library
quiet when necessary) and enforcing the no eating or drinking (except for water) rule
and no mobile phone conversations
To whom responsible:
The Library Assistant is responsible to the Librarian who in turn is responsible to the Director.

Temporary/Annual (September-June)
Salary:
£8.50 per hour including holiday pay
Hours:
23 hours per week. Term time afternoons and evenings until 8pm and
Saturdays 11 - 4. There is occasional extra daytime work offered.

Probation:
Staff are required to satisfy a probationary period at the commencement of
employment
