Jesus is about to begin His journey to Jerusalem and to the cross and resurrection. He asks those who are to follow him a simple question. “Who do you say that I am?” That is a question that we must all answer if we are to follow Jesus. Jesus is the Messiah, our Savior. To follow Him is to suffer with Him, die with Him, and rise with Him. In other words there is a cost to following Jesus. There is no cheap discipleship. To follow Jesus is to lose ourselves and go where Jesus leads us, to experience a dying to self in order to experience the risen life of Christ. To let go of grudges, prejudice, even lifestyle in order to go where Jesus leads. What do we need to let go of to really follow Jesus? PETER’S PENCE COLLECTION Next Sunday envelopes for the Peter’s Pence Collection will be available in the pews. This collection provides Pope Francis with the funds he needs to carry out his charitable works around the world. The proceeds benefit the most disadvantaged: victims of war, oppression, and disasters. Please return envelopes with donation the following week. FR. JOHN’S FAREWELL Please take sometime after all the Masses next Sunday to express your appreciation to Fr. John for his time spent at Sacred Heart and to bid him God’s blessings as he embarks on his new assignment. A Prayer for Fathers God Our Father, In your wisdom and love you made all things. Bless those fathers who have taken upon themselves the responsibility of parenting, separation, or divorce, and who are parenting their children alone. Strengthen all Dads by your love that they may become the loving, caring persons they are meant to be. Grant this through Christ our Lord, Amen Reflections by Fr. Carlos Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, I want share with you the last part of the of 5 Ways To Nourish Your Spiritual Life Today by Jeannie Ewing. 3. Take a 10-minute walk in a natural environment. Canticle of the Sun, St. Francis of Assisi This means somewhere without concrete (unless it is a walking path through a nature preserve), without noise and the buzz of city life. It also means without any technology, so put down the smartphone, tablet, and mp3 players. I cannot overemphasize how healing a nature walk can be. When I take that ten minutes (or more) to step outside of my hectic routine and just listen to the evensong of our local birds, observe the vast array of deciduous trees and myriad colors of the flowers surrounding me, I feel as if God has reached down from Heaven to offer me an embrace. However brief it may be, a simple, solitary walk in the midst of trees, flowers, birds, and water easily brings us back to the Creator. I believe it is because creation reflects God in all His wonders and glory, so we are naturally drawn to praise and thank Him for the gift that nature provides to spiritually nourish us. 4. Sit in silence. God does not typically speak to us in thunder or flashy acts of grandiosity. Rather, He whispers to us in the silence of our hearts, where He resides. How many of us who are lay people (and perhaps even consecrated religious) find that sitting in silence is nearly an impossibility on a daily basis? Yet how will we hear God speak to our hearts? How else will we permit Him to heal us, clarify and guide us, strengthen our resolve? TODAY’S READINGS First Reading — Zechariah foretells the Messiah (Zechariah 12:10-11; 13:1). Psalm — My soul is thirsting for you, O Lord my God (Psalm 63). Second Reading — There are no distinctions or divisions; we all belong to Christ (Galatians 3:26-29). Gospel — Peter proclaims Jesus as the Christ; Jesus speaks of his great suffering to come (Luke 9:18-24). June 19, 2016 Page 3 Youth Ministry News When someone says they are going to the "Happiest place on Earth" most people automatically think Disneyland which, with their slogan, is correct to assume. And let's be honest, Disney does a great job of making children and kids of all ages dreams come true. Now as much as I am a Disney fanatic and frequently visit the park, Disneyland is not the happiest place on earth for me. The happiest place on earth for me is at mass celebrating our faith. No rides, no colorful characters or singers, no sugar filled snacks, just us and Christ fully present in our midst and in our bodies. For most people however, they would rather be at Disneyland, and this is the problem with our church. People would rather be anywhere but mass and because of that, miss out on the beauty and fullness of the mass. The mass is exhilarating and full of life, but we tend to miss it. We challenge and teach our teens about the importance of the mass and why if they know what is going on and what it means, mass is more than meets the eye. So next time you go to mass, prepare before hand, read the readings, and know what prayers and movements mean during the mass. I promise you, if you do this, mass will be better than Disneyland. SAFEGUARD THE CHILDREN VIRTUS TRAINING The Archdiocese of Los Angeles mandates Virtus Training for all adults working with children. ALL volunteers (EM, Lectors, Ushers…) who work in ministries at Sacred Heart and have contact with children and all staff and clergy are required to be VIRTUS certified and to recertify every four years. Next re-certification class is: When: Wednesday, June 29th Time: 6—7:30PM Where: St. Francis Cabrini Senior Center To sign-up call 647-3235 Ext. 304 DID YOU KNOW? Implement safety rules for kids going to summer camp Summer camp is a time-honored tradition for kids. Whether it’s an all-day camp or cabin sleepaway, kids can get out of the house, learn new skills, and make friends. Parents who send their kids off to camp should be sure to research the camp and the counselors who will be watching their kids. If your child is going to sleepaway camp, check in by phone or mail regularly. Ask questions and ensure that your child is safe and cared for at any camp. For a copy of the VIRTUS® article “Summer Camp Preparation” email [email protected] or call (213) 637-7227. Sr. Margaret Mary E-Mail: [email protected] Questions to ponder: 1. Where in the world is God’s grace needed today? What difference can it make when people cooperate with God’s grace? Where in your own life do you most need God’s grace? What will it mean for you to cooperate with God’s grace? 2. If you were to name the divisions that exist today what would they be? What injustices do you see in your own community? What have you done or can do to right those injustices? 3. Jesus asks, “Who do you say I am?” Name one way our life answers who you believe Jesus to be. Registration for September classes: 1. Forms are on our office door or online at sacredheartventura.org Instructions for registering are on the back of the form. 2. Office hours during June are Sundays 10-12, Tuesdays/Wednesdays 6-8 or by appointment. WORDS OF WISDOM… “A father is someone you look up to no matter how tall you grow.” ~ Unknown June 19, 2016 Page 5 MISA DEL MEDIODÍA, 12 P.M. Please join us 11:45 AM on Saturday, June 25 at Our Lady of The Assumption Church to join groups throughout our country to pray the rosary at noon for conversion. We will walk to the corner of Mills and Telegraph Rd. and back to the Church while praying the Rosary. This rosary petition is sponsored by America Needs Fatima at http:// www.ANF.org Reflexiones del Padre Carlos Hermanos y hermanos en el Señor, Quiero compartir con ustedes un artículo que encontré en internet sobre 4 formas en que podemos. En está ocasión comparto las dos primeras. Dios bendiga su semana. 1.
