pOH chapter 6 lesson 7 Objective You will be able to calculate the pOH of a solution given the concentration Basic Solution pH pOH Sometimes you are asked for the pOH of a solution, rather than the pH. The calculations are almost identical. The formula is still a logarithmic one. pOH=-log[OH-] It is important to understand that for all aqueous solutions at SATP, pH + pOH = 14. Example 1 A solution has a pH of 4.5. Calculate the pOH. Example 2 A solution of sodium hydroxide has a concentration of 0.0500 mol/L. What is the pOH? What is the pH? Example 3 What is the pH of a 2.51x10-5 mol/L solution of ammonia? Example 4 The maximum solubility of barium hydroxide at 20˚C is 3.8 g/100 mL. What is the pOH of this solution? We will assume that all of the barium hydroxide dissociates under these conditions. Assignment Read p. 230-237 Do p.237 all
