Heritage Park Secondary School Newsletter Mission Public Schools October 31, 2013 | Volume 18, Issue 3 Jim Pearce, Principal | 33700 Prentis Avenue, Mission, BC V2V 7B1 | Tel 604-820-4587 | Fax 604-820-4589 | hpss.mpsd.ca MESSAGE FROM THE ADMIN TEAM Mr. Jim Pearce, Principal Dear Parents and Guardians, As you know, Interim reports were sent home during the week of October 15th. The majority of these reports were sent home electronically using the program, Check My Mark. If you have any questions regarding your son’s or daughter’s academic standing or missing assignments, please contact the teachers directly via the email link on the Check My Mark report. Check My Mark is a reporting program which gives families direct access to their child’s progress and can be used to facilitate conversations regarding learning and achievement goals. Students who have an ‘Incomplete’ standing in a course would have received an Incomplete report, as these forms were mailed out by the 18th of October. Our first term report cards will be available for parent pick up during the Parent-Teacher Interviews scheduled for Thursday, November 21st, 3:30 to 8:00 p.m. No appointments are necessary and the majority of our staff members will be located in the main gym. In October we sent over 46 students and staff to the We Day Celebration in Vancouver for an amazing leadership experience where they listened to people from around the world sharing their experiences about how to make a difference in the world. This year we had the opportunity to host elementary students at the Clarke Theatre. They were able to participate in the event by watching a live telecast. Once again this year, our PAC has shown outstanding support for the programs at HPSS. At our October meeting, they received numerous applications for financial support for a variety of programs such as guest presenters, field trips, the math club, and the library. It is through our PAC’s support we are able to offer opportunities for our students such as the Math Club which is an organized club for all students who enjoy mathematics. We would like to thank our PAC for their dedication and hard work on behalf of the staff and students of Heritage Park Middle/Secondary School. Best regards, HPSS PAC ABORIGINAL CORNER October began with the Grade 7 students going to the Long House for a presentation by William Charlie and family. Students learned to play the bone game “Slahal” and made Cedar Bark head bands. We learned about traditional homes and territory, and we received an amazing salmon lunch. We also had salad, rice, deer stew and of course dessert. What a wonderful day! ‘Me to We’ was a long but successful day for all. The Clarke Theatre had a live feed for other students that could not go, to include them in the day’s events. Hillside Traditional Academy took full advantage coming to the theatre to participate. Several of Mrs. Marks Textile classes at HPSS will be starting the “Capote Project “, a Metis Jacket. Each student will be hand sewing a Capote. Lisa Shepherd, a Metis Artisan, will give a presentation to the students and explain the history and the traditions of the Capote. Miss Vinnie was in to visit students in the ISP room and showed off her new Tuppie (Traditional Metis Dog Blanket). Miss Vinnie has been able to visit a number of schools in the district helping children learn about Metis Culture and Traditions. The following article was adapted from www.busykidshappymom.org and may help provide tips to aid in your meetings with teachers: 1. Your main goal during a conference is to make sure your teachers understand that you are in a partnership with them and want to do everything at home to support your child’s needs. Above all else, treat them as a professional. 2. Be specific with the teacher. What are your concerns? Take a list with you so you don’t forget. 3. Usually teachers can only give you about 10 minutes. High school teachers have 200+ students! The teacher is generally averaging about 5 hours of conferences. If your list is really long, you can email it to them beforehand. 4. Ask questions that need more than a yes or no answer. Example: “What kind of large projects and research assignments will be assigned this year?” 5. One conference in November does not need to end your communication. Contact them as often as needed. Links to teachers’ email addresses are on Check My Mark. 6. Do you have your Check My Mark password? Do you want to change it to something easier for both you and your child to remember? 7. Let the teacher know when changes are happening at home - email works well for this. 8. After the conference, if you feel you still have unanswered DRY questions, contact theGRAD teacherFUNDRAISER again. Do not go over the teacher’s head immediately. It helps to document your interactions, so Parent that if you need to talk to the principal or and The Dry Grad Committee is having a burger guidance counselor you’ll be prepared. beverage night.
