Loud Mouth Theatre Company is looking to feature ambitious and adventurous works as a part of our Lost Commissions reading program. Readings are quarterly, and held in a variety of venues around Hobart. Over the last few years, support for our nation’s playwrights and their incredible work has seen exponential growth. This is awesome. We are totally on board with this. Major theatre companies across the country commission works at a rate of knots, and through these companies as well as organisations like Play Writing Australia and, closer to home, the Tasmanian Writers’ Centre, writers have access to a plethora of development opportunities for their works. But there’s the rub. Creative development workshops, commissions and writers’ retreats are incredible ways to get writers started on an amazing story: but there are only so many new Australian works that come out of these developments to see and tread the boards of our county’s stages: the purpose, unless you roll like G.B. Shaw, of writing a play in the first place. The Lost Commissions is Loud Mouth’s commitment to revivifying works by writers from across the country that have seen the developments, the retreats and the workshops but have been sorely in lack of a season to call their own, the best of the lost: the ambitious, the brave, the strange, the epic stories that have never made it to the stage, but deserve to have their voices heard. What we want, in one Microsoft Word or PDF document: ♦ 150 words or less biography of you, the writer. ♦ 150 words or less blurb or synopsis of your previously unproduced work. ♦ 150 words or less history of the development of the play. What you get: ♦ $100 + 25% net box office, and a reading of your play presented by Loud Mouth in Hobart. Please email your application to [email protected].
