Theme: Introduction and Colors Objective: Activity + Description Time Formalities: (ex: classroom rules, name tags, etc.) 3 min • Gather girls into a circle holding hands; take a step in and say “marhaban” three time to begin classes. Introductions: 1 min • Asking the girls what they think it means. Encourage guessing and equating Arabic words to English phrases • (Begin in all Arabic) Using phrases of introduction. “ahlan wa sahlan” “isme….” “ma ismk” Extra challenge: learn how to say … Activity 1 5 min • “Hello”-­‐ Lila and Lindsey will greet the girls using ahlan wa sahlan, isme Lila/Lindsey, ma ismk? o Greet each girl individually and repeat the phrase “isme….; ma ismk?” and have them repeat “isme (their name)”. o Have each girl say their name to the girl next to her out loud. But make them yell by saying you can’t hear them. o Tape up colors on the wall while you introduce them. Activity 3 • Is this (insert color)? o Pointing to the colors taped up, call out a color and have students use their thumbs to identity if the color is right. o Reiterate color names. Activity 4 • Who is wearing the color? o After reviewing the colors orally, call out a color and students must identify it. o Have people wearing the same color stand up and change seats in the circle. Activity 4 • Musical colors Students stand on a colored circle. Teacher starts to play music. When the music stops the teacher holds up a color (paper/object) and asks “Who is standing on …?” What color is this? 5 min Bring groups together for color lesson. Have the students move to a thing or object in the classroom that is the Arabic color. 5 min One group. Lindsey Activity 6 • Read the Hungry Caterpillar story—going through each color. • Act out the Hungry Caterpillar. Designate each student to be a specific color vegetable or fruit, as well as one student to be the caterpillar. Place students around the room so that no one is next to one another. Have the “caterpillar” student go around to each student asking “What are you?” The “vegetable/fruit” student responds with their color and their vegetable/fruit. The caterpillar eats the fruit and the student then becomes part of the caterpillar, following it around. Once all the colors are eaten, students all become butterflies. Activity 7 • What’s your favorite color? o Start by saying instructor’s favorite color o Have the girls go around in a circle and asking them what their favorite color is. § Clap your hands if your favorite color is “blue” § Oink if your favorite color is “pink” § Stomp your feet if your favorite color is “green” § Romp around/be a minion if your favorite color is “yellow” 3 min 5 min One group; girls sitting on the floor Caterpillar book
