As a young boy he liked making mechanical devices. He went to school at King’s College. He didn’t particularly like school and didn’t do very well. He preferred making things like windmills and sundials. He did eventually go to university at the lowest entry level, but still did not do that well. The university he went to had to close because of the plague and so he continued his studies at home, where he started to write and carry out experiments. Within a period of two years he had made many important discoveries. One day whilst sitting in the garden, an apple fell to the ground. He decided to investigate why things always fell down. He did not solve this puzzle until a few years later and called this force gravity. He then went on to discover that gravity kept the planets orbiting the sun. Sir Isaac Newton is now known as one of the greatest scientists who ever lived. He died in 1727 at the age of 84 and is buried in Westminster Abbey. © Primary Leap Ltd. 2008 www.primaryleap.co.uk - Primary Resources Score 8 06-03-05-002-s Name: Date: Subject: Year 6 Science Unit: 6e Forces in action Sir Isaac Newton Questions 1) Name two things that Isaac Newton made as a child: _______________ _______________ 2) Where was Isaac Newton born? ____________________________________________________ 3) Why did the university that Isaac Newton went to close? ____________________________________________________ 4) What did he do after the university closed? ____________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________ 5) What fruit fell to the ground that started Isaac Newton thinking about why things fall down? _______________ 6) What did he name this force? _______________ 7) What else did he discover about gravity? ____________________________________________________ 8) What age was Isaac Newton when he died and where is he buried? ____________________________________________________ © Primary Leap Ltd. 2008
