represent an incredibly profitable industry in the agriculture and food
production sector and are as important as wine production and growing
and canning fruits and vegetables.
At the same time, the tobacco industry has been one of the most
attractive industries for foreign investments in the said sectors.

Production of Raw Tobacco (Tobacco in Leaves)
The production of raw tobacco (in leaves) and tobacco-based products represent
an incredibly profitable industry in the agriculture and food production sector and are as
important as wine production and growing and canning fruits and vegetables. At the
same time, the tobacco industry has been one of the most attractive industries for foreign
investments in the said sectors.
Tobacco and Tobacco Products: Exports and Imports
A) Exports of tobacco and tobacco-based products in 2013 stood at 25,444 tonnes,
marking a 26% higher financial result compared with 2012 and a 29% increase compared
with 2011.
The average selling price of fermented tobacco in 2013 stood at US$ 6.1 per
kilogram; in 2012 it was US$ 5.3 per kilogram and in 2011 it was US$ 5.5. Average selling price
of cigarettes in 2013 was US$ 9.2 per kilo, marking a 17% decline compared with the price in
2012.
Exports of tobacco and tobacco products in 2013 reached US$ 180,876.036 marking
a 22% rise compared with 2012 (US$ 147,382.245) i.e. an 18% rise compared with 2011 (US$
152,714.784).
B) A total of 2,570 tonnes of tobacco and cigarettes were imported, which is by 1%
less than in 2012 (2,594 tonnes). A total of US$ 16.5 million was spent, which is by 30% more
than in 2012 (US$ 12,614,846).
Association of tobacco and tobacco products producers
In 2013, Macedonia had 1,121 thousand hectares of agricultural land. Arable land
accounted for 44.2% (509,000 ha) of the total agricultural land, whereas 611,000 hectares
were under permanent pastures.
Ever since 2001, the area under crops (arable land) has been shrinking, a tendency
that has not been stopped by ongoing positive measures incorporated in economic policies
of the past four years. Areas under crops and vegetables have shrunk by 5.5%, areas under
vineyards by 6%, while orchards marked a 7.6% expansion.
In 2013, 42,367 contracts were signed and crops were sown on 19,806 hectares of
land. Approximately 32,000 tonnes of raw tobacco were purchased.

The Association is committed to developing cooperation among the Association’s
member companies and other economic stakeholders and organizations, and the
central and local authorities, including dialogue on draft-laws and bylaws.
The Association serves as an information point to its members, the central and local
authorities, civic associations, consumers, and media on the abovementioned matters
and topics.
The main goals and activities, aimed at achieving the Association’s objectives, are:
•
supporting and coordinating members’ activities for the purpose of achieving the said
objectives and realizing common interests in activities for which collective approach is
the most suitable method of action;
•
protecting member companies’ interests before state institutions;
•
coordinating the interests of the Association’s members, their suppliers and clients in all
activities where collective representation is a more favorable form of operation;
•
preparing objective analyses and projections regarding expected production of raw
tobacco (in leaves), its purchase, processing, and import of tobacco and tobacco
products;
•
disseminating useful information on new methods, technologies and standards in the
production of tobacco and tobacco products;
•
participating in debates on environmental protection and health regarding tobacco
industry;
•
participating in developing rulebooks, laws and other regulations regarding this industry
in cooperation with competent ministries and the Government of RM.
Forms of Association in the
Economic Chamber of Macedonia
The Association of Tobacco and Tobacco Products Producers is comprised of
business entities and legal persons - individual tobacco producers in the industry for
production of tobacco and tobacco products.
The Association of Tobacco and Tobacco Products Producers within the Economic
Chamber of Macedonia has approximately 27 members that are important representatives of
the industry.
In order to address its members’ specific interests, two groups are formed in the
framework of the Association of Tobacco and Tobacco Products Producers, which function
independently:

Group of Tobacco Purchasers and Processing Companies, and
Group of Tobacco Products Producers.
The tobacco industry and cigarette production’s GDP share is 5.8%. Its primary
production provides employment to 30,000 workers. The sectors for tobacco processing and
cigarette production employ 3,500 people and have a 6.7% share in the processing industry.
There are 17 active business entities working in the domain of tobacco fermentation and
production of tobacco products.
