Wetland Stormwater Control and Woodland Buckthorn Removal Continues Buckthorn control is needed because buckthorn plants out-compete native plants for nutrients, light, and moisture. It degrades wildlife habitat and threatens the future of forests, wetlands, prairies, and other natural habitats. Buckthorns contribute to erosion by shading out other plants that grow on the forest floor, and serve as host to other pests, such as crown rust fungus and soybean aphid. It also lacks "natural controls" like insects or disease that would curb its growth. This is accomplished by cutting out these bush-like plants which grow into a tree, and then herbiciding, and then controlled burns. Buckthorn removal has been done in various areas over recent years, most notably Cranberry Lake. The Village wetland areas also serve as our storm water detention to insure storm water is accommodated and flows properly. Many of our wetland areas are overgrown and will be cleared this year to ensure adequate stormwater flow.
