David Johnson opened the first Community Safety Precinct Committee meeting for the
(Commander) year 2016 by welcoming and acknowledging members of the
committee.

Report on Actions / Outstanding Issues from last meeting
 Introduced Crime Manager Detective A/Inspector Joshua Palmer;
and Licensing Officer Senior Constable Tom Melia.
 Carnival of Cultures. Ashfield Park Sunday 20th March 2016.
 Supt. Johnson will be attending the Citizenship ceremony.
 Nil outstand actions from previous meeting in December 2015.
Community Discussion
 Canterbury / Hurlstone Park Graffiti a concern. We continue to 10.14am
remove the graffiti as soon as possible.
 Pressure is on the community especially with increased
construction of high rise buildings.
 Traffic patterns already affected due to the developments on
Canterbury Road Canterbury.
 Developments have affected parking near stations.
 Concerned about extra people without extra space.






Gambling Counsellor in Ashfield.
Interesting sector; severe issue with only a minority of guests from
West. Underlying factors.
Last couple of years, psychologists have put problem gambling
under category.
Problem gambling a disorder.
There is a large number of seniors at the club; a community of its
own. Bingo brings seniors together, there is a sense of society and
engagement when interacting among peers.

Looks after Graffiti.
CPO and Ashfield Council to do a Graffiti Removal Day on
Sunday 18th October 2016.
Recent clean up of Carlton Crescent along the rail line.
One graffiti cleanup truck for the whole Local Government Area.
Recently tag ‘SOOT’ seen sprayed at various locations.
New parking signs enforced on 15.3.2016.
Restricted parking to residents.
Residents were notified by mail.
Bay run between Ashfield Bridge and Leichhardt having issues
with bikes.
Richard Murden Reserve on Hawthorne Parade has a new 10.21am
playground; seen an increase in pedestrian traffic, riders, joggers
and park users.
New residents having issue with parks/whistles blowing off esp.
Netball games.
Council mergers with Leichhardt and Marrickville are inevitable.
Graffiti continues to be an issue; with cleanup response of
24hours.
Council keep a record of the vandalism reports.
Possible Graffiti operations in the lead up to Graffiti Removal
Day.
Along Ashfield train line, 50000 more residents.
Main issue; no allowance for infrastructure to support new
residents. I.e. new schools, new hospitals, etc.
Plans to rip train lines out for 12 months. New buses to replace
trains while station is upgraded.
Keep an existing line for freight line.
Limited funds for the installation of new lines. Funds to come
from residential buildings.
The term Graffiti vandals, not artists, are used at Canterbury
Council.
Last 10 years, Council have enlisted the help of artists to paint on
signal boxes with successful results.
‘No standing signs’ are expensive. Consideration to go back to
painting Yellow Lines on the ground.
The issue about who looks after Noise Complaints from 8am to
8pm. Council looks after complaints during the week from 8am to
8pm, however, after hours, it is expected that Police assist in
dealing with such complaints and it is dealt with accordingly by
way or a warning or fine.
Introduced himself as the new manager for Cardinal Freeman
Village.
Currently undergoing extreme redevelopment.
Issue with speeding drivers on Victoria Street Ashfield; dangerous
to seniors crossing the road.

Stockland did a survey of Victoria Street however, unsure of the
seriousness of the problem as people don’t cross.

Push to introduce zebra crossings along Victoria Street. Council
have conducted a speed count, awaiting results to determine what
measures to put in place.

Decline in parolees receiving drug testing intensions orders.
Correction orders are down. 10 a fortnight.
New magistrate.
Expecting more community service orders.
Bail at court results in Centrelink and Accommodation assistance.
Police and Corrective Services continue to work together.

Construction underway for medical centre.
Materials finally ordered.
Centre to open August/September 2016.
Security gate at rear; service entry restricted to Ambulance and
Emergency services; as well as service deliveries.
Across the border we’re seeing an increase in numbers/clientele.
Happy with partnership with Police.
New work health safety system to align with Australian/New
Zealand standards.
Front of site, approval received to remove trees at the front of the
church to allow for natural light.

Reports from Lackie Street Summer Hill; an increase of loiters
hanging around the square. Offenders intimidating. Similar to the
Christmas period, with an increase in anti-social behaviour.
Businesses are encouraged to report crime no matter how small an
issue.
Clientele presumable from chemist on Lackey Street Summer Hill
who are seen hanging around Summer Hill after receiving
treatment. Businesses fearing their presence scarring off
customers.
Two hour resident parking in Summer Hill is being updated as we
speak. It will help increase customer numbers to the Summer Hill
CBD.
Three applications for new boarding houses in the area have been
rejected. DA section refused boarding house.
Boarding House on Moonbie Street Summer Hill has been refused.
Issues with overdevelopment and back log of traffic affecting
transport and parks.
Mayor Robson’s response; Boarding houses are affordable.
Canterbury Council has put traffic islands in place on badly
affected streets.
