Annotated Bibliographies

Helpful annotated bibliographies are contained in Lindberg and Numbers (, pp.
–), Brooke (, pp. –), Shapin (, pp. –), and Henry (,
pp. –). Hessenbruch () is a bibliographic guide organised by topic, with
brief essay overviews.

Anthologies
Helpful anthologies on the interaction between science and religion include Lindberg
and Numbers (), Lindberg and Numbers (), Dixon, Cantor, and Pumfrey
() and Harrison ().

 Encylopædias
.
Science and Religion
A very helpful reference work is Ferngren (), selections from which are reprinted
in Ferngren ().
. Science
The definitive scholarly reference work (still in progress) is The Cambridge History of
Science (Vol. : Park and Daston , Vol. : Porter , Vol. : Nye , Vol.
: Bowler and Pickstone , Vol. : Porter and Ross ). The best single volume
reference work is Olby et al. ().
.. Pre-Revolution
Schmitt and Skinner () covers philosophy from the middle of the fourteenth century to the emergence of modern philosophy.
..
Revolution
Applebaum () is the definitive encyclopæpedia.
.
Religion
The definitive scholarly reference work is The Cambridge History of Christianity (Vol.
: Mitchell and Young , Vol. : Casiday and Norris , Vol. : Noble and
Smith , Vol. : Rubin and Simons , Vol. : Angold , Vol. : Hsia
, Vol. : Brown and Tackett , Vol. : Gilley and Stanley , Vol. :
McLeod ).
 Surveys
. Science and Religion
Brooke () remains the definitive treatment. A more recent pair of volumes together
cover a longer period of history, with Grant () examining the period from Aristotle
to Copernicus and Olson () examining the period from Galileo to Darwin. Both
include some helpful primary sources.

. Science
.. Pre-Revolution
Lindberg () is a magisterial survey of science before the scientific revolution.
.. Revolution
There are a number of excellent surveys on the scientific revolution, including Shapin
(), Jardine () and Dear (). However, most useful for the interaction between science and religion is Henry (), which is both very concise and includes
separate chapters on magic and science and religion and science respectively. Cohen
() is a study of the historiographic issues surrounding the scientific revolution.
