NSAA Newsletter - July, 2013
Well here’s newsletter number two already. This will be brief as there is a bit of a rush to get
this out to everyone in time for the next go round of state shoots. I just quickly want to say that we have
a terrific bunch people in our Midwest group of archers with all kinds of great personalities making it an
even more enjoyable sport. Thanks to everyone for letting me be a part of it!

Orion Archery has proudly demonstrated and held firm to their mission, “It’s all about the kids”! Eight
years ago one of their own archery club kids, Brandon Tomcak, was killed in an auto accident. In
collaboration with the Tomcak Family the Brandon Tomcak Memorial 3-D Shoot was created to
introduce the love of the sport to other children as Orion Archery had done for Brandon.
The results have been outstanding! We have achieved our mission and continue to demonstrate it each
year with the support of the archery community and many major sponsors. This event has opened the
eyes of many to see that our children are the future of archery which has resulted in other archery clubs
getting involved. We have also seen the expansion of the event to now include the Boys and Girl Scouts
in the surrounding area as well as other clubs duplicating this event. All funds raised from this event
have been reinvested back into the archery community.
Each year children ranging from 3 to 73 come to this event which is geared for the inexperienced
shooter. Entire families arrive with the interest and passion of archery yet not knowing a thing. We
provide guided instruction through the course as well as all the archery equipment needed. We have
bows, arrows and quivers available for the smallest shooter all the way up to largest and in all colors,
including pink! They are guided through the 20 animal courses and educated on the sport. Upon
completion each child receives a medal for participating and we always hear them say,
“ Dad, I want my own bow and arrow, can we go and buy one today?”
Over eight years the Brandon Tomcak Memorial 3-D Shoot in collaboration with Orion Archery has,

Thank you for your continued support!

Secretary Notes July 2013
Hello all,
Well summer is about half over and we are 2 State shoots away from
finishing our state calendar. I have included the State Overall results
thus far and as long as everyone meets the requirements (shoots 4
state tournaments and at least 4 other of our member club shoots)
they will be eligible for the state overall awards and reimbursement of
half NFAA dues next year. If you see an “X” it means you shot it, no
points but it counts as 1 of 4 (and/or your 4 others if you shoot all 7)
If you changed classes in JUNE (a lot did with senior and youth
changes) you will see your early points went to an X. (lost points but
you get credit for shooting) You still had an opportunity to finish 4
shoots in the NEW class.
Remember if you qualified last year, you need to renew your
membership THIS YEAR with me, so I can pay half your dues. For
families, we only reimburse for those who meet requirement.
If you qualified you will see a ** by your name on the 2013 roster.
It came to my attention that the copy of the constitution on the web
page was NOT the most recent update. Hopefully by the time you
receive this; that has been changed. State Overall is your TOP 4 finishes
(only required to shoot 4) for a maximum total of 20; and if there is a
tie we go to the FIRST head to head and determine winner.
Our member clubs : (NFAA/NSAA) whose shoots count as OTHERS:
Ahamo, Full Draw, Norfolk, Prairie Bowman, Robinhood, Patte Valley,
Third City, Golden Arrow, Lost Arrow Archery, Mid Nebraska
Bowhunters, and Northeast Nebraska Archers.
13
Remember this is your newsletter and we encourage you to get
involved and submit articles, info etc.
As a State Association we have a lot of resources as far as instructors
with USA archery and NFAA. The list as of today includes Level 3
Coaches/Instructors; Erika Jones, Tom Saunders, Mark Eggers, Bill
Arledge and myself, Deb Colgrove.
Level 2 instructors are Danny Wood, Mark and Chris Pengra (Iowa),
Brian Jennings, Brad and Chris Johannesen, Jeff Allen and Kent
Colgrove. I know of 2 others Gene Metschke and Todd Bouvia who are
still pending some completion of documents.
It is crucial to our sport that we keep growing, teaching and
encouraging new members to join. Plus as a bonus, I think we have a
lot of fun despite being very competitive.
Be sure to see the change to a SHOTGUN start at 9 am for Norfolk
State marked 3D in August. State Overall competitiveness has made
the Board take a look at how we run our state shoots with the host
clubs and you will see more of the shotgun starts so we can pair people
with peer groups. We all like to shoot with our friends, husband, wife or
child, but the State shoots are about the competition and will be run to
support that.
As a reminder it is YOUR responsibility to keep your membership
current, so renew as soon as you see the renewal slip. If not, you drop
off my list as a member, which I supply to Darby for newsletters. Darby
has also included a copy of the recognized classes…I do my best to
make sure and help you out with that, but you need to know what class
and where you shoot from for the State shoots and for State Overall.
Thanks,
Deb Colgrove

Minutes from Board meeting June 30th, 2013
Present: Matt Carmin, Deb Colgrove, Robert Gregg, Jim Tubbs and
Kevin Byington. Not Present: Ed Christman, Tom Saunders and Darby
Anderson.
Change Norfolk Marked 3D to shotgun start to be able to assign groups:
Unanimous vote- Matt will talk to the club
Work on a Constitution change and wording, so all State shoots have
assigned groups and all 3D’s one day (Sunday) so we can eliminate any
question of cheating as State Overall continues to grow.
Unanimous vote to change
Reminder of State Overall in every newsletter
Take a look at points assigned in State Overall to create some spread
and to encourage more participation. Discussion amongst board, Deb
reported numbers are way up for participants and method last 3 years
has seemed the fairest and really comes down to best archers head to
head.
Discussion on working on some new medals to be able to offer again as
an alternative to NFAA medals. Deb will work on and talk to Kathy Trail,
state member who is in that business.
Meeting adjourned, all in favor
