On May 7, 1915 as the British Ocean Liner Lusitania was making its way back from New York to its Liverpool destination, the passenger ship met with tragedy. Off the Irish Coast a German submarine torpedoed the vessel and within
20 minutes, the ship was sunk. 1198 people were killed in the attack leaving 761 survivors. News of the attack reverberated throughout the world, and is said to be a contributing factor for the US to enter the war. The sinking of the
Lusitania also impacted the citizens of Port Arthur and Fort William as both area newspapers reported the day after.
