WOMEN VICTORIOUS AT THE WESTERN STATE INLAND MEET
Temperatures rise as the Wildcats turn up the heat Friday in 6 way competition
VAN NUYS, CA. – The West Los Angeles College women’s track and field
team was victorious at the 2011 Western State Conference Inland Meet at LA
Valley College.
The women’s team was led by Freshman, Kemi Olonade who won the 100
hurdles and triple jump. Olonade posted a SoCal auto qualifier in the triple
jump as well. West LA won the meet with 183 points, followed by Santa
Barbara (109), Glendale (88), LA Valley (79), Bakersfield (52), and Citrus (45).
The lady Wildcats 4x400 relay improved on their state leading time with a mark
of 3:50.77. The 4x400 relay was led by Reanna Davison and Dyneeca Adams
who won the 400 and 800 respectively. Selina Collins and Cydney Graham
were also members of the squad which posted a SoCal automatic qualifying
mark in the process. Other highlights for the ladies included victories by Ryan
Richardson in the shot put and Courtney McCoy in the long jump. The pair
also had 2nd place finishes in the discus and high jump respectively.
The men’s team was led by Sophomore, Jevoni Buchanan won the 100 and
the 200 meters. His 200 meter time was the 4th fastest in the state at 21.51.
Terrance Conway won the 400, in 48.61. The pair teamed up with Franz
Palacio and Jonathan Byrd to take first place in the 4x100 meter relay as well.
Byrd later partnered up with Miguel Ruiz, Gilroy Bladen, and Johnathan Kelly to
take top honors in the 4x400 relay to close the meet. Other top performances
for the Wildcats included Bryan Lowery who took 1st in the 110 meter hurdles,
and Palacio, who bounded for the victory in the triple jump. Kelly also won the
400 hurdles in a time of 53.53 which was a SoCal auto mark and ranks him #3
in the state.
This will be an important week for the track and field program as the Mt. Sac
Relays are this Friday at Mount San Antonio College. That is the same site of
the Southern California Championships in May.
