FROM THE OGLE OFFICE DE EL PASTOR Dear friends, We welcome Bishop DiMarzio here this weekend for the closing Mass of our 175th Anniversary Year. Just as our parish today is the embodiment of a continuous chain of pastoral life with parishioners back to 1841, so also, the Bishop marks the continuity of Catholic faith in our diocese back to Bishop Loughlin, the first Bishop of Brooklyn and even earlier, to Bishop John Hughes of New York who sent Father Michael Curran here in 1841 to found this and many more Queens parishes. In fact, Bishop DiMarzio is a successor of the Twelve Apostles themselves and so truly represents for us a special “bond of connection” as Blessed Cardinal Newman would say, and our point of unity with the Universal Church as Vatican II taught. We welcome him with joy on this historic occasion. The sacramental registers of OLMC and St Margaret Mary together comprise many volumes: 36 volumes for Baptism, 10 for Confirmation, and 23 for Marriage— literally thousands of souls touched by Christ. And there’s no accounting the number of those catechized, absolved, counseled and consoled in those many years. We celebrate what this parish has been in the past. Likewise in our anniversary year we have cultivated many activities for those here now in spiritual, social, and temporal ways. I thank all the Anniversary Committees who labored to do all this work and whom we honor on this occasion. We are also grateful to see that our current Mass attendance has seen a slight increase over the last few years as well, and we pray that trend will continue. But we also look to the future, with our programs of religious education, young adults, Jornada and Sunday Scripture Study groups and Levantate reaching many current and newer parishioners in an outreach of faith. This weekend we also look to the future by installing our new Vocations Committee. I ask you all to pray the Lord of the Harvest to send more workers into the vineyard as we begin our next century of service to the Lord. God love you, Msgr. Sean G. Ogle Dios te cuide, Mons. Sean G. Ogle PARISH BULLETIN BOARD LAS POSADAS Las Posadas, a Hispanic Christmas custom: Our Spanish– speaking community is again preparing to celebrate an ancient tradition to prepare for Christmas call “Las Posadas”, which replicates the search of Mary and Joseph for a place to stay in Bethlehem during the nine nights before Christmas, from December 16 to December 24. A couple representing the Holy Family enact a ritual at the house door, and are eventually asked in, where many from the community are gathered for prayers together and fraternity custom also serves as a means of evangelizing our parish. Pray for the pastoral fruitfulness of this year’s “posadas”. PRAYER OF THE WEEK Second Week in Advent God of majesty and power Who spoke and this world was. We hope you are able to take a tag or more if possible and buy the items listed. Please do not wrap the gift. Just tape the tag to the bag or box so we can identify the item and where it is to go. Please bring the gift no later than the weekend of January 8 and give to an usher during Masses or bring to the Rectory for safe keeping.
