From The Principal’s Desk
Recently I was reading an
article from the CBC that
shared information from the
Canadian Centre for Child Protection about speaking to kids
about personal safety. As parents I think we would all agree
that helping our children keep
themselves safe is one of our
most important responsibilities.
However it is also one of the
responsibilities we have the
least information about.
I know that as a parent I
often fall into the trap of telling
my kids what not to do. ‘Don’t
talk to strangers’ seems like
solid advice until our children
are in a situation where they
are approached by someone unfamiliar to them. When children
are only aware of what not to
do, unfortunately they may be
left feeling helpless as they do
not know what to do. When
speaking to your children about
safety, here are a few ideas that
may serve to be helpful:
1. Focus on what children can
do when they find themselves in
an unsafe situation. Very often
we tell kids what not to do, but
this is not as helpful as sharing
with students how to handle a
given situation when it arises.
Children need to be equipped
with strategies that will help
them stay safe.
2. We often focus on warning
our children about individuals
who may hurt them or cause
harm. Children do need to be
cautious with strangers but also
need to remember that the majority of people are good and
helpful. Speak to your children
about where they can go to get
help if needed.
3. Avoid using scare tactics with
children. We do need to make
children aware of situations that
they should avoid, however overwhelmingly negative messages
or focusing on the worst case
scenario will only serve to make
children fearful and anxious.
4. Use media as a way to start a
conversation with children. ‘Did
you hear about what happened
to those kids at the mall in Winnipeg this weekend?’ or ‘Did you
hear about those kids that got
lost on their snowmobiles?’.
Talking about real situations
and figuring out how they can
be handled is a great conversation to have with your children.
At school your children will
learn about personal safety in
every grade throughout the
health curriculum. They will
also be exposed to special programs and guest speakers on a
variety of safety topics. To share
a few examples, in recent years
we have educated students
about off-road vehicle safety,
suicide prevention and awareness, cyber-bullying and staying
safe online, and how to identify
a trusted adult. Above and beyond our classroom wide initiatives our school counsellors and
social work support are always
available to help support parents in discussions about student safety. If you have any
questions or would like some
additional support speaking to
your child about their personal
safety, please do not hesitate to
contact me here at the school
and I will connect you with one
of our student support team
members.
Trustee Update
The Sunrise Board of Trustees has been working on the 2017/18 budget.
April 21st
PD Day, no school
The funding announcement from the Province meant an increase for some school divisions and a
reduction for others. For Sunrise School Division the Provincial funding for next school year equated
to a 2% reduction for school spending in our division.
May 12th
PD Day, no school
As such, the school board has to decide to either cut in terms of spending or ask for the reduction in
provincial funding to be made up by an increase to property owners taxes. Please go to the Sunrise
School Division website to share your views. http://www.sunrisesd.ca

Kindergarten Orientation
I have received some enquiries from parents these past few weeks about concerns in the classroom
and school. Having parents wanting to talk about their kids’ education, safety and extra-curricular
activities in school is fantastic in my view. A truly high functioning school has excellent two-way
communication.

PAC News
Powerview School’s Parent Advisory Council held their monthly
meeting on February 21st and were pleased to hear updates from
principal Trevor Reid, the Grad Committee, Student Council and
the WE Day Committee.
There are a lot of great things going on in our school and we are
pleased to see so many students and staff going the extra mile!
The PAC Committee held discussions on upcoming fundraisers.
We will once again be running the QSP Magazine sales in conjunction with Canadian Parents for French. The money that PAC raises with this project goes towards the Grad Award, and Teacher/Staff Appreciation. We are currently looking at projects that
PAC would like to undertake. Discussion have taken place around
what our school/students need and decisions will be made accordingly at our upcoming meetings.
As you can see PAC is about many things… not just fundraising or
a venue to voice possible concerns. It is a proactive, dedicated
group looking to enhance and support the education of all our children.
The Parent Advisory Council for École Powerview School meets
once a month (the 3rd Tuesday of every month) as a forum for parents to find out what is going on in the school, learn about the educational process, to discuss projects and have meaningful conversations. We are always looking for more members and would love to
see you out at our meetings! Meetings are held in the staff room
at the school (enter at the front door and follow the signs posted).
For more information, please call the school or email [email protected]. As well, PAC is now on Facebook!!! Search
@pvspac (École Powerview School Parent Advisory Council) to like
our page and stay informed on our projects and so much more!!

the program successful because it provides a framework through the
child's eye for the parents which allows the parents to better understand

Oak Hammock Marsh
Hé Ho! Le Mini Festival au Marais Oak Hammock: The
grades 3F and 4F classes went on a field trip to Oak Hammock
Marsh on February 24th.
All activities focused on the
Voyageurs and their way of life. The interpreters presented
the sessions in French and were very knowledgeable. The
students participated enthusiastically and represented our
school very well. Thank you Mr. McKay for joining us!
Here is an outline of our day.
 Voyageur Game - J'habille le voyageur (Dress a fellow
student as a Voyageur...but you are blindfolded while you
dress a classmate!) Reviewed the Voyageur clothing.
 Learned about the Beaver and his role in the fur
trade. Discussed how the Voyageur traded items with the
Aboriginal People and why beaver pelts were needed.
 Voyageur Game - Danser la gigue (Danced the gigue)
Talked about what the Voyageurs did for fun!
 Examined other animal pelts from that era.
 Voyageur Games - Relais en raquettes (Snowshoe relay
race) and Lance la galette (Bannock Toss)
 Examined three different kinds of snowshoes and
discussed their suitability for different environments.
 Finished off with a winter snowshoe walk on the Oak
Hammock Marsh trails!
It was a great field trip!

Grad News
Powerview Wild Wolvz Varsity and Junior Varsity teams celebrated a strong end to their seasons recently. All teams hustled hard all season and gave their adoring fans a season to remember.
The Junior Varsity boys team finished 3rd this season after an exhilarating set of games featuring some seriously talented young men. Big Wazzy dominated the offensive rebounds while
Jamie Simard and Nathan Bruneau drove the hoop with an unrivalled ferocity. Captain Zac
Mac kept everyone focused and enthusiastic despite Ashton and Ethan's best efforts to turn up
the intensity to 10000000. Noah shot many an exhilarating 3 while Hayden floated down the
court with his hair flowing majestically.
Varsity Boys had a non-stop adventure, finishing 4th in their season. During playoffs Zach Harry re-entered the scene
after an injury to join forces with fellow Black River recruits Trev-dog Harry, Tyrelle "the Shimmy" Peebles, and Big
Man Ernie. Dream-team Austin and J-Coss used their telepathy to work magic together while John "Strong Arms"
Armstrong danced around every defender who dared to get close to him. Resident rappers Joshua, TyTy and D-Boyd
took a break from the ones and twos to hustle their hearts out on the court while Dawson the DribbleMaster and Daniel
DribbleMan Guimond dribbled like they had never dribbled before, all day long.
The story of the century is the Varsity Girls however, who never lost a league game. The. Entire. Season. These
warriors won every single game and went on to win the banner to make Powerview history. This banner is made of the
blood, sweat and tears of some incredible ballers. Captain K-Starr fought tooth and nail every second of every game to
be the most ferocious baller on the court, meanwhile young R-Starr crashed the boards like a champion. Our Leftie
guards Avery HG and Cassie Dubs took all defenders by surprise as they graciously tore up the left court with finesse
and ease. Sarah the Spin-o-Rama Superstar Spence pivoted like a boss as she facilitated numerous spectacular give
and go's and SpeedDemon Britt Boulette zipped around like a lightening bolt. Our import Clarissa Bird showed the
world some ridiculous skills which left most teams googly-eyed with awe. Cherish Simmy and Arien RobDog flew down
the court with an intensity the fans had never seen before. Delanie Bruyere was literally unstoppable as the DelanieDrive through the centre key sunk basket after basket after basket after basket after basket after basket. The girls'
season ended with a serious barn-burner at Steinbach Christian for the zone banner. After finishing ahead at the end
of every quarter we fouled out three of our eight players and finished down by 3 points. If only Coach Hovorka and
Coach Burns could have snuck into the game at the end...
If you see any of these players in the hall give them all a well deserved high five or head nod. And don't forget to take a
selfie with our fancy new banner in the display case outside of the gym.
