THE MINISTER OF VETERANS AFFAIRS:
When addressing the delegates at the 2002 National Conference the Honorable

Presidents Report
I am immensely proud and excited about the clothing range that has
been designed by our Management Team. Page 11 in this month’s
magazine tells part of the story of what we as an organization hope
will be a very successful sell through item on our Website over
summer and next year, the 100 year anniversary of NZ’s
involvement in WW1.
As a Club we are always asked for souvenir items, especially by
those that land on our door steps from the many cruise ships that
visit Napier over summer – we will now be able to fill that niche
market.
While some of the shirts will depict famous and poignant statements, many will also display
fabulous ‘one liners’ that will cater for, and appeal to a broader and younger market,
statements that will certainly enhance both the brand and say something special about the
person who is wearing the item.
The Home Style Classic Dinners have certainly tapped into a new market from the display
fridge up in the main body of the Club and is becoming increasingly popular with the
members. These will also go onto our Website and will be available for the public to purchase
either fresh or frozen ‘On Line’, with home deliveries at this stage on Wednesdays only.
While it is important that the RSA sticks to its core business, it is equally important that we
maximize potential opportunities which in turn minimize down time on very expensive
equipment and waste – this is being achieved thanks to the extraordinary efforts of key
personal.
There is a potential for our home Style Classic Dinner to sell upward of 500 per week without
putting any extra stress on existing staff and if it was to grow beyond that we would consider
and earlier starting shift on meal days – we are currently catering for circa of 300 meals a
week.
As an organization we accept that not all ideas are good ideas and we could go as far as to
say some really great ideas just don’t hit the market, quality, price, style and wording will all
play a part in the success or failure of these projects – it is a suck and see.
However we are comforted by the wise old owl who was the head of IBM a few decades ago
when he told his board that Bill Gates was mad and the buying public would not want a (PC)
Personal Computer in their home – how wrong can you get. In terms of risk management our
investment in both projects is not significant
The first quarter trading results were presented to the Board during the month and while
profits were small they exceeded budget which was very pleasing. The clubs investment in
new gaming machines has proved popular with the members and playtime and profit are
slowly growing in spite of an unprecedented high level of cancel credits and Jackpots
payments.
In conclusion I take the opportunity to thank all the Members for their continued ongoing
support, without which the Club could not function nor provide the services and facilities it
currently provides

Travel Club News – Our Aussie Holiday
Everyone was up 4.30am ready to get on the bus to Napier airport to start our lovely holiday.
It was a good flight to Auckland and then onto Brisbane with excellent service.
Most of us were very hungry as we did not have breakfast and fortunately we had a very
nice meal on the plane which was wolfed down with relish.
We were greeted
when
we
cleared
customs by a placard
from our shuttle driver
saying ‘Napier RSA’,
then an hour later we
arrived
at
our
apartments. We were
on the 14th, 15th, and
16th floor and all the
units had lovely views
of the sea and people
looked like ants down
below.
Our first trip was to
visit
the
OASIS
SHOPS to stock up on
food then we all went
Noela Thompson, Don Fraser, Margaret Davies, Charlotte
to the Surf Club for a
Lawrence & Joy Miller at the ‘Spirit of the Horse Show’
meal which was very
nice, but dearer than
our own RSA. The pokies, were very busy and were played by the addicted few. As we had
reciprocal visiting rights, each time we went there we were just waved through the main
entrance with comments like “oh here’s that Napier RSA Team again”.
We all went to Jupiters Casino, and joined up at the main entrance and then swiped our
cards as we went through and Marie got an instant welcome and a $50 credit, everyone else
got ‘sorry better luck next time’.
We had 3 outings as a group while we were away, then the people who shared rooms did
their own things from then on in.
The Tram was very popular as transport to Southport RSL, Surfers and the shops, one lady,
who shall remain nameless bought 4 handbags and another purchased 4 tops, but I won’t
pass on any rumours, as they say what goes away, stays away.
One of the highlights for us 5 who shared the same room was the SPIRIT OF THE HORSE,
it was a tribute to PHAR LAP and was openly acknowledged as a NZ horse to our delight
and we all cheered.
A lovely meal was included as part of the show and when we went out the exit all the
performers were there to say goodbye to us, Noela thanked them for the NZ Pavlova and
they laughed at that.
Some did a cruise to surfers, some went to Tweed Heads, 3 others played housie at the
bowling club where the house was worth $1000 and we went to the markets where there
were a 1000 stalls.
Some of us went on the
AQUDUCK
which
was
fantastic, except for the driver
who rubbished us every
chance he got and asked
what flight we were on and
when were we going home –
it was all done in good
humour and added excellent
flavor
to
the
overall
experience.
THE BIRD SANTUARY was
lovely, however I lost my
muffin and coffee to a dozen
ROSELLAS who sat on our
heads and arms and took our
food out of our hands a delightful experience.
‘Lest We Forget Memorial’ display in
Surfers Paradise shopping mall
We had some funny things happen during our holiday, Noela went out on the balcony and
the door locked behind her, we all laughed at her when she tried to get back in and she
blamed us, claiming we locked her outside.
Charlotte shouted me a sherry when we dined in one night, only trouble was there was only
half a teaspoon left AND IT WAS IN A LARGE WINE GLASS.
Marg could not get her hair dryer to go, only to discover after much angst that she did not
have it switched on. Noela and Lesley got off the tram at Cascade Gardens to wander
through (as they thought) to see all the flowers only to discover it was a name of a suburb,
not gardens.
Now, saving the best till last, two intrepid explorers, namely Brian and Stan decided to visit
the upper levels, they were on the 14th floor and we were on the15th, they could not access
by lift so decided to use the fire escape in the center of the building.
Somehow they locked themselves between floors and when the lights went off as well as
the alarm, they were frantic and ever so panicky, not that they would admit it. Their wives
heard them shouting and opened the door to let them out. I was quite flattered as they said
they were coming to see me.
We had a most enjoyable holiday and everyone seemed very happy, albeit a few more days
of the lovely warm weather would have been nice and there were still a few more things we
would have liked to see and do.
Over all impressions of the holiday was lovely warm weather, beautiful beach’s, friendly
Aussies, good shopping and more importantly the company and friendly members of the
travel club, a wonderful time together, thanks guys
Don thinks RIO DE JANERO WOULD BE GOOD FOR OUR NEXT VENTURE, anyway
thank you all for a lovely happy holiday

Young Kiwi speakers to represent New Zealand at
Gallipoli 2015
The RSA is delighted at the announcement made by Veterans' Affairs Minister Michael
Woodhouse today, that all eight regional finalists of the 2015 ANZ RSA Cyril Bassett VC
Speech Competition will be included in a group of 25 Youth Ambassadors commemorating
the centenary of Anzac Day in Gallipoli.
In previous years the national winner of the competition has travelled to Gallipoli to represent
New Zealand youth. RSA National President, Don McIver, says the decision to also include
the regional finalists recognises the extraordinary calibre of the secondary school students
who take part in the competition, and adds a special dimension to the already prestigious
event.
“The regional finalists are top young achievers from communities around New Zealand and
every year we hear these students speak on the subject of war with maturity and eloquence.
We know they will represent New Zealand with pride and spirit when they stand on the
grounds of Gallipoli 100 years after our Anzac soldiers landed,” says Mr McIver.
The ANZ RSA Cyril Bassett VC Speech Competition is a partnership between the RSA and
ANZ to promote a deeper understanding and appreciation of the sacrifices made by those
who have served New Zealand in armed conflicts overseas.
The competition, for year 12 and 13 students, is a tribute to Cyril Bassett, VC – the only New
Zealander at Gallipoli to be awarded the Victoria Cross, and one who worked his entire
career at ANZ Group.
Peter Parussini, Head of Corporate Affairs ANZ, says that as New Zealand's oldest and
biggest bank ANZ is proud to be involved in a competition that connects younger New
Zealanders with an event that helped define us as a nation.
"Cyril Bassett was a staff member before and after World War One and ANZ staff are proud
that his name is associated with the competition," says Mr Parussini.
Registrations for the 2015 ANZ RSA Cyril Bassett VC Speech Competition will open in the
last school term of this year. Regional finals are planned for early February next year, with
the national final taking place shortly after in Wellington. Students will be asked to speak
about ‘New Zealanders in World War One’. The national winner of the competition will
perform their speech at the official Anzac Day commemorations in Gallipoli.
Mr McIver says the growing commitment of young people to attending dawn parades held
by RSAs across the country shows us that young Kiwis have a keen interest in
commemorating and remembering our nation’s service heritage. “This is a remarkable
opportunity for eight very special young people to have the experience of a lifetime.”

Warning about eBay
Sitting by the window of her convent,
Sister Barbara opened a letter from home
one evening.
If you buy stuff on line, check out
the seller carefully.
Inside the letter was a $100 bill her
parents had sent. Sister Barbara smiled
at the gesture.
As she read the letter by the window, she
noticed a shabbily dressed stranger
leaning against the lamp post below.
Quickly, she wrote, "Don't despair. Sister
Barbara," on a piece of paper, wrapped
the $100 bill in it, got the man's attention
and tossed it out the window to him.
The stranger picked it up, and with a
puzzled expression and a tip of his hat,
went off down the street.
The next day, Sister Barbara was told
that a man was at her door, insisting on
seeing her.
She went down, and found the stranger
waiting.
Without a word, he handed her a huge
wad of $100 bills.
"What's this?" she asked.
"That's the $8,000 you have coming
Sister," he replied.
"Don't Despair paid 80-to-1."
Be careful what you buy on eBay.
A friend has just spent $295 on a
penis enlarger. The bastards sent
him a magnifying glass.
The only instructions were "Do not
use in direct sunlight"
Easily Explained
A man goes to his doctor and complains
that his wife hasn’t wanted to have sex
with him for the past six months. The
doctor tells the man to bring his wife in so
he can talk to her and hopefully
determine what the problem is.
The following day, the wife goes to the
doctor’s office. The doctor asks her
what’s wrong, why doesn’t she want to
have sex with her husband?
“Oh, that’s easily explained. For the past
six months,” the wife says, “I’ve been
taking a cab to work every morning. I
don’t have any money. The cab driver
asks me, ‘Are you going to pay today, or
what?’ So, I take an ‘or what’.”
“Then, when I get to work,” she
continues, “I’m late, so the boss asks me,
‘Are we going to write this down in the
book, or what?’ So, I take an ‘or what’.
I take a cab to go home after work and,
as usual, I have no money. The cab
driver asks me again, ‘So, are you going
to pay this time, or what?’ Again, I take an
‘or what’.
So you see, doc, by the time I get home
I’m all tired out and don’t want it
anymore.”
“Yes, I see,” replies the doctor. “So, are
we going to tell your husband, or what?”
Poppy Products
Over the next few months
the Napier RSA will begin
to sell its own clothing
brand and memorabilia.
We have imported a few
samples
of
‘Poppy’
products from the United
Kingdom and subject to
consumer demand we will increase the
range over time.
These are 1914 – 2014,
100 year pins and quite
unique
and
very
collectable. It is unlikely
that any other Club is
importing them so if they
are of interest to you
please see Sue or Anne at reception, they
cost $10.00 each.
We are also in the
process of having our
very own 100 year Club
Badge manufactured and
as soon as it is available it
will become a sell through
item at reception and on
our website. The 100 year badge is 19162016.

Clothing is a little more difficult. We have
the RNZRSA range and they have gone
for big and bold logos’, whereas we have
gone for a more petite fashionable style.
The clothes deliver a strong (but not in
your face type of) message so the clothes
can be worn as smart casual from a
Saturday afternoon down at the port or
around the family BBQ at home – or at the
neighbours while watching late night
rugby.
I have put a few samples up for you to look
at and I hope they will be ready to be sold
in late September. Absolutely fabulous
Christmas Presents. Hope you like them,
there are about 20 other designs and
wording combinations under development.
Please note these are sample only and

The Emperor’s Palace
A visit was arranged courtesy
U.S. Navy and in particular
the U.S. Destroyers crewsthe Tin Can Sailors. The
opportunity for a run ashore
was a welcome relief, first to
witness the damage to the
city, plus a chance to stretch
the seal legs.
Transport was laid on, U.S.
vehicles with a Marine armed
and riding shotgun style
made the journey of about 20
miles. The noise of the the
U.S. bulldozers as they toiled
clearing the rubble was the
first thing we noticed, the
furrows they worked made the landscape similar to a plough field. Utter devastation. The
U.S. Airforce with its round the clock bombing had paid off, with contempt for the Zero which
proved no more than a nuisance at the latter stages of the war.
Led by a jeep, which was part escort and part guide we halted in the rural area on the
highway. This was a different world. As we disembarked, the laughing and talking increased,
so did the camel smoke as we sauntered along to the gates. The incline we went down
would have been a moat in the early days. The sentries had a photo session. We spent two
hours in the grounds, an experience to remember. The residence itself was occupied and
out of bounds. I often wonder how it escaped damage – it made one think – the question
remains with me today. It was so vulnerable.
Late 44 we left the U.K., we returned late 46.
“The forgotten Fleet”
H.M.S. Camperdown Battle Class Destroyer, British
Pacific Fleet
On the 27th August, U.S. destroyers led allied ships in to Sagami Wan to anchor in peace,
and in view of the majestic Mount Fuji. They passed Tokyo Bay over the following days after
minesweepers had cleared the entrance. Six days later – 2nd September 1945, the surrender
was signed on board U.S.S. Missouri.
The shock that followed the release of the A-Bomb and the appalling damage they caused,
took some time to register, the Japanese were more concerned about the impending
Russians, who had declared war on the 8th August. To repel that great fighting power in their
weakened state, offered a prospect of such barren hopelessness that fear of the Russians,
rather than of further atomic explosions, may have beed the decisive factor that brought
about the surrender, thus on the 14th August, as the Russian’s swept even nearer though
Manchuria, Japan accepted the terms of the unconditional capitulation to the Allies. The
German Army was faced with the same predicaments.
