We held our first annual Scripps Spelling Bee on January 29th. The purpose of the spelling bee was to help students improve their spelling, increase their vocabularies, learn concepts, and develop correct English usage that will help them all their lives. The students worked hard memorizing words for the classroom spelling bees that were held in December. The winner of each classroom spelling bee participated in the ACES Spelling Bee. As a reminder to parents, please remember all instructional time is important. Please help your child be successful in school by making sure he or she comes to school every day and on time. Teacher workdays and school breaks are an ideal time to schedule medical and dental appointments! Cultural Arts Your fundraising dollars at work..... Did you know that the PTA funds all of our cultural arts programs? With support from United Arts Council grants and your fundraising dollars we were able to bring 3 awesome experiences to all ACES students this year. In November, Michael Cooper, storyteller, engaged our children with folk tales and stories with incredible and unique masks. In February, Moscow Nights and the Golden Gates showcased music and instruments from Russia. In December we hosted Bryant Holsenbeck, artist in residence, to introduce our students to weaving with recycled materials. Be sure to stop by the media center and see the colorful butterflies that all the students created! They really brighten up the space! Thank you to the PTA and the United Arts Council for supporting these amazing experiences for our children. Mrs. Reynolds “It is fun to have fun. You just have to know how.” —Cat from The Cat in the Hat Students and staff had lots of fun this past week. Abbotts Creek Elementary School held its first annual Dr. Seuss Spirit Week to honor Dr. Seuss’ 112th birthday. Author and illustrator of over 44 books, Dr. Seuss revolutionized the way children’s books were written, illustrated, and read. His mission was making reading fun. Many of his books encouraged creativity, self-expression, and fun. Piggy backing on this idea, students and staff dressed in a variety of themes from crazy socks to showing off team spirit. The week culminated with a Dr. Seuss Book Character Parade. Thank you to all the family members and friends who came to cheer and watch the parade. Thank you to all the parents who helped get together costumes, hats, socks, jerseys, and pajamas to make this week a huge success! Students and staff enjoyed having fun. Classes learned about Dr. Seuss, his books, and their societal impacts. It was a great week because Team ACES came together. To quote Dr. Seuss, “the more you read, the more you know. The more you know, the more places you’ll go.” This week proves reading and fun go together well. Mr. Hamilton Jump for the Heart Parents...Thanks for all your support during our Jump Rope for Heart fund-raiser. Our school raised over $10,000! In your child's P.E. class, we held a jump rope event where we celebrated our school's fundraising efforts, new jump rope skills, and most importantly that we know how to care for our healthy hearts through exercise and eating healthy foods. During the second week of March I will send off the donations our school raised. The thank you gifts that certain students are eligible for should be here a week or two after Spring Break. If you have any questions or concerns please email me at [email protected] The PTA Nominating Committee is working on the 2016-17 PTA Board and Committee members.
