2014 AIM TO 2015
Our sustainable approach is integral
to our strategy of being the best for
clients, the best for consumers and

It is not a standalone set of actions it is part of the way we work.”
Remo Brunschwiler, CEO Selecta Group
OUR SUSTAINABLE APPROACH
As Europe`s leading vending company we embrace and
promote ethical business practices setting sustainable
development goals which are integral to the way we do
business. To this end, we believe in:…
ENVIRONMENT
COMMUNITY
…supporting our community
We are supportive of community
initiatives, both locally and globally,
and also support activities undertaken
by our supply chain.
…respecting our environment
We are committed to reducing our
carbon footprint, handling our
waste efficiently and increasing
our energy savings.
PRODUCT

We are focused, together with our
partners and suppliers, on offering
a wide choice of quality products,
including healthy and certified
alternatives.
WORKPLACE
…providing a safe and
enjoyable workplace
We are dedicated to working on
health and safety, as well as running
a company that our employees enjoy
working for.
Respecting our
environment
“We are committed to reducing our carbon
footprint, handling our waste efficiently and
increasing our energy savings.”
Tour Optimisation
Planning will help
us reduce our
carbon footprint.
ENERGY SAVINGS
RECYCLING
Goal: to ensure Selecta`s operational
processes are contributing to a better
environment
In today`s world, and for the Selecta Group,
recycling is an important topic. Every local
Selecta office contributes to the recyclingprocess. Selecta Switzerland is very active
in the recycling process. By establishing
strong partnerships with recycling companies,
we manage to recycle an impressive 85% of
our total used cups, PET bottles, aluminum
and glasses on average. Selecta Netherlands
started using cups which are made from
cane sugar leaves. The cups are compostable
and used to grow oyster mushrooms which
are in turn used for producing snacks.
Selecta France designed a solution with the
company Versoo, where plastic cups and
spatulas are compacted, crushed, mixed
with foundry residues to create ballast
products for home appliances.
ENVIRONMENTAL
STANDARDS
Goal: to reduce our carbon footprints for a
healthier environment
Selecta Group is working hard on the
´Tour Optimisation Planning´ project.
This continuous investment allows our
merchandisers to drive in a smarter, more
ecological way to our clients with the
support of an automated route planning
system. So far, nearly two million euros
have been invested and plans are in place
leading as far ahead as 2017. In addition to
this project, the Nordics are using fully
electronic, environmentally friendly cars
for our merchandisers. In France, new lease
contracts were signed for vehicles that
benefits from new technologies and thus
reduced energy consumption. In the United
Kingdom, engines with stop/start
technology and telematics are being used
to actively manage driving styles and
behaviour.
Goal: to reduce our energy consumption by
innovative solutions
Energy efficient machines are our latest
innovations. Selecta is developing Group-wide
vending solutions with latest technology and
an A+ energy rating (EVA EMP). Ferrara and
Lioni vending solutions consist of an A+ energy
label plus ‘’optimise mode’’, which calculates
over the initial 2 weeks of install, when the
machine is active in use. It then automatically
enters into energy saving mode during periods
when the machine is not in use. Locally,
Selecta Switzerland applies the `Aquaclic`
system to all water taps, which results in
saving half of all used water, and thus CO2 and
energy. Selecta UK developed the Bean-to-cup
machine, Ravello, which has a 29% reduction
in energy consumption versus the previous
solution. During the UK ‘Nova-Project’, older
vending machines were renovated, including
an upgrade to LED lighting standards which
contribute to a significant energy reduction.
Supporting our
community
“We are supportive of community initiatives,
both locally and globally, and we also support
activities undertaken by our supply chain.”
The miofino fund will
improve education, health
care, water supply and
electricity solutions in
Rwanda.
SOCIAL RETURN
Goal: to give humans a fair/better chance
in today’s working environment
Selecta is a people’s company and we like
to show this by supporting everybody. In
the Netherlands, we started to provide
jobs for people returning to the workplace
(for example coming back from illness or
career breaks). For several employees we
have set up structural cooperation with
companies, like Lander, USG and Restart,
providing these reintegration programs.
Next to these new programs, Selecta France
will make our vending machines accessible
to all, especially the visually impaired, as
Selecta is working with the Association
Valentin Haüy to develop labels in Braille.
At the customer’s request, Selecta can
attach Braille labels on selections keys
of Lazio or Milan vending machines.
NEST
Goal: to work together for raising money
for the vital research
In the United Kingdom, Selecta was touched
by young lady who won the Young Fundraiser
of the Year 2014 for raising over £60.000 for
the Nephrotic Sydrome Trust, or NeST. NeST
is a dedicated charity that was set up to raise
money to fund the vital research with the
objective of finding a cure for this syndrome.
Selecta UK has chosen to work with the
charity after meeting the inspiring young
woman, Emma Copa.
GLOBAL COMPACT
Goal: to adopt sustainable and socially
responsible policies.
These policies and business activities have
been set up by the United Nations Global
Compact, the world’s largest voluntary
corporate responsibility initiative. Their
priorities include respect to human rights,
improve labour conditions, protect the
environment and combatting corruption.
Selecta`s operations are in line with these
policies and we ask the same from our
suppliers.
MIOFINO
COFFEE FUND
Goal: to support Rwanda in its
development in the coffee industry
Selecta Nordic established the Miofino
Coffee Fund: to support and uplift the
livelihoods of coffee growers producing
green beans, with the aim of including these
in our future Miofino coffee blends. For
every kilo of Miofino, 1 KR is contributed to
the fund. The fund will improve education,
health care, water supply and electricity
solutions in Rwanda, Africa. It will also
increase coffee seedlings, replacing old
coffee trees, consolidate coffee plantations
and appropriate agricultural inputs
(washing stations). This activity will enable
production quality and quantity to grow
significantly with over 50% increase in
yields and value compared to the current
situation. It is very likely other countries will
start contributing this fund during 2015.
product
offering quality & choice
“We are focused, together with our partners
and suppliers, on offering a wide choice
of quality products, including healthy and
certified alternatives.”
We are committed to
reach agricultural
sustainability for
our hot beverages.
CERTIFIED,
SUSTAINABLE
PRODUCTS
Goal: to maximize the current range of
certified and sustainable products
Selecta is committed to reach agricultural
sustainability for our hot beverages. We work
towards meeting this over the long-term while
preserving the environment and promoting
human development. The amount of coffee
we buy from local roasters has significantly
increased. A good example in the Netherlands
is Peeze organization who supply 100%
certified coffee. More and more of our coffee
is Bio Label, Max Havelaar, UTZ or Rainforest
Alliance labeled. Our sustainable sourcing
policy is not restricted to coffee, for example
in France, all Lipton teas are certified and in
the UK Fairtrade Hot Chocolate is provided.
The certification marks – such as UTZ CERTIFIED,
Rainforest Alliance Certified™ and Fairtrade – are
internationally recognised independent guarantees
of sustainable production. The new EU organic mark
ensures that the product is compliant with EU organic
farming regulation.
QUALITY CONTROL
Goal: to ensure our consumers and clients
receive the high standard quality
We continually check the quality of our
products and services. Procedures in place
are to ensure we deliver the highest quality
and ensure maximum machine uptime. We
also have a HACCP program for food safety
control, next to our independent quality
audit sample tested across our estate.
NUTRITIONAL
INFORMATION
Goal: to provide nutritional and allergens
information about our products
to consumers.
Selecta has a Group-wide guideline,
providing nutritional information from the
European Vending Association before local
implementation. During the UK ‘Nova-Project’,
traditional machines are also upgraded
with QR codes that can be scanned with a
smartphone to access nutritional information.
Alternatively, stickers are sometimes used on
the front or at the side of the machine. New
hot beverage machines with touch-screen
are equipped with the information button,
to get a full page of nutritional information.
HEALTHIER
CHOICES
Goal: to provide all consumers and clients
with a wider range of healthy alternatives
Selecta is committed to an effective
nutrition health approach alongside
suppliers and commercial partners. A wider
variety in vending with nutritional and
diet recommendations from governments
and advisors were introduced to Selecta’s
offering. Selecta France has launched the
‘’Feel Good’’ Program, offering nutritious and
healthy products in our vending solutions. In
the United Kingdom, healthier alternatives
such as Raw Nuts and Dried Mango pieces
are good examples of healthier choices
and are proving successful lines. Selecta
UK is rolling out skimmed milk across all
hot beverage machines in order to reduce
calories and offer HVO free alternatives.
workplace
providing a safe and
enjoyable workplace
“We are dedicated to working on health and
safety, as well as running a company which
our employees enjoy working for.”
We have developed
a coffee expertise
training toolkit
for our employees.
COMMUNICATION
ETHICAL AND
TRANSPARENCY
Goal: to ensure Selecta maintains an
honest and fair reputation within the
industry
Our internal processes and practices are in
line with ISO 26000. Acting in an ethical
and transparent way that contributes to the
health and welfare of society is our priority.
To make some local changes, some of our
agencies have been modernized to reduce
energy consumption. More user-friendly,
relaxing break spaces
have been created
for optimal
employee
welfare.
Goal: to listen to our employees and
provide information and communications
We recognize that effective and open
communication within our organization is
essential to providing excellent service to
clients and consumers. Therefore, we hold
regular team meetings where business
briefings are communicated to ensure our
teams are informed and aligned with
Selecta’s Objectives.
HEALTH AND
SAFETY
Goal: to ensure the health and safety of our
employees and members of the public
Selecta is committed to provide a safe and
healthy environment for all of its employees,
customers, contractors and visitors. We
understand that a successful health and
safety culture can only be achieved by
observing safe working practices and
procedures as a result of effective risk
assessments, good training and continuous
improvement. We are proud to be and
accredited Safe_Contractor which formerly
recognizes the standards we maintain.
TRAINING AND
ASSESSMENTS
Goal: maximize personal development and
opportunities for each of our employees
New starters receive a thorough
introduction into the company and receive
training throughout their career with us.
This is reflected in our high rate of employee
retention and their excellent career
progression. An assessment of training and
development needs form part of all regular
performance reviews and appraisals. Those
employees identified as having potential
and a desire for greater responsibility, are
given the opportunity to develop skills and
knowledge through a range of training and
development initiatives.
our
commitment
“As the European market leader in vending,
Selecta looks to set the standard. Our
commitment to sustainability, now and in the
future, is an integral part of our strategy. We
take our responsibility seriously, believing
that we can make a real difference for all our
stakeholders - clients, consumers, employees
and partners - improving the quality of life
for everyone.”
MIOFINO
COFFEE FUND
At Selecta, the Miofino Coffee Fund is our
commitment and contribution to make a
difference for a better world with greater
social responsibility. The Miofino Coffee
Fund, started in the Nordics, is a fund to
support and uplift the livelihoods of coffee
growers producing green beans, with the aim
of including these in our future Miofino
coffee blends. The fund provides financial
and technical assistance for production as
well as community improvements such as
schools, healthcare, water supply and
electricity. The fund has tight controls and
transparency to ensure that funds reach and
benefit the appropriate grower communities
and projects. Representatives of the fund,
including Selecta employees, visit farms and
help improvement initiatives directly.
Our current project is Rwanda, as it is one of
the poorest countries in the worlds, still
suffering from the war and genocide in the
1990s. 90% of the people get their living
based on agriculture, with coffee and tea
being the major export products. The country
is still one of the smaller coffee producing
countries in the world. There are great
opportunities to improve the coffee growing
industry and thereby the lives of the people
in the coffee communities and the Rwandan
economy. Currently, the national coffee
production is about 20,000 tons of green
coffee and the average productivity per tree
ranges from 2 to 3 kg of cherries, depending
on agro-ecological zones. This is greatly
below an international average, where productivity per tree ranges between 4 to 6 kg of
cherries. Coffee in Rwanda is normally grown
at high altitude with perfect conditions for
high quality coffee.
The overall goal of Miofino Coffee Fund is to
improve farming of coffee by increasing
productivity, improving quality, marketing
and making farmer organizations more
cohesive as well as efficient. These improvements will allow Rwandan coffee farmers
to send their children to school, build new
homes and invest back into their
own plantations.

Highlights of our
commitment
Here are some examples of various projects and
initiatives from across the Selecta Group.
PCRRG
Selecta UK is also a founder member of the
Paper Cup Recovery and Recycling Group
(PCRRG). This group is committed to the
development of collection and recycling
opportunities. They encourage the
sustainable transformation of paper cups
into a valuable resource. This is part of the
Cumbernauld depot who adheres to Zero
Waste Scotland.
In addition, offsetting some of the carbon
impact of servicing our accounts through
planting trees. The UK, for example, has
embarked on a tree planting programme to
offset the carbon footprint or the
operations. So far, 213 trees have been
donated to schools in order to offset 213
tonnes of carbon.
Selecta Zero Emission
Selecta Nordics has introduced fully electric
cars for our merchandisers in several
countries. It started with introducing one car
per country, e.g. Finland, Norway and Sweden.
But as it is such a positive opportunity for
creating a better environment, the amount
of cars quickly increased.
Mirante Machine – A coffee machine is no
longer that strange object that stands in the
corner of the room making funny noises. It is a
machine to be proud of when having it in your
office. As well as visually appealing it is very
easy to use and is low in its energy
consumption with its A+ energy label. There is
a function on the touchscreen which provides
nutritional information, product specifications and allergy information. When it is
dark, the machine’s modern, energy-efficient
LED lighting will brighten up any space.
Tour Optimisation Planning –This project has
been active Group-Wide for a few years now.
At the end of the year 2015, we are aiming to
have nearly 900 merchandisers supplied with
this system of optimized route planning.
Selecta Switzerland is leading in this process,
with approximately 450 cars utilizing this
innovative technology.
Move Machine – Together with UNICUM
manufacturer, we developed the state-ofart snack and drink machine with multiple
innovations in design, technology and convenience. It consists of a stylish graphical
user interface, 50% more capacity but less
energy consumption, superior ergonomic
height and bi-directional telemetry to allow
preventive maintenance and shorter
reaction time for technical intervention,
increasing the machine’s uptime.
Selecta Benelux Supports carefully selected
social initiatives like Villa Pardoes, a holidaystay/home near the amusement park `De
Efteling`, specially designed for children with
life-threatening conditions. Since 2003, €0.18 per
kilo have been donated from every kilogram
Fairtrade coffee we sell on an annual basis.
