We’re all familiar with his story — something that this new show makes perfectly clear, and it uses
that as a shorthand to successfully leap over the tall hurdle of world-building faced by most

much more action oriented, with a much bigger story than “Will Kara get a boyfriend?” So breathe

Fish Mooney
In our latest installment, the Rogues discuss the finale episodes of Gotham, Arrow, and The Flash.
Not only has Gotham jumped the shark, they also have done so in a way that short-changes their
best storyline and the characters that come with it.
And is the Arrow finale — with the promise of a lighter tone in season four — a setup for more
interactivity with The Flash and Legends of Tomorrow? Or perhaps even Supergirl? Does the
grimdark show need to lighten up to play nice with others?

Film Review: WONDER WOMAN is Almost
Flawless (No Spoilers)
Wonder Woman (2017)
Written by Allan Heinberg (based on the DC character created by
William Moulton Marston)
Directed by Patty Jenkins
Produced by Charles Roven, Deborah Snyder, Zack Snyder,
Richard Suckle
2h 21min, rated PG-13
For the past month (probably much longer, but that’s when I started to notice) it’s been nothing
but Wonder Woman everywhere I looked. From Snapchat filters (yes, I had tons of fun with those)
to reviews, posters, events (Women-only viewings caused quite a stir!), and just everything has
been about Wonder Woman. Her long-awaited appearance on the big screen has been a long time
coming. If there were any thoughts that a female superhero movie “just wouldn’t work”, the trailer
and anticipation of this movie crushed those thoughts.
And then the movie came out and the critics agreed, Wonder Woman definitely works. It’s
expecting to earn 100 million dollars this weekend, but I’m sure it will surpass that amount. Patty
Jenkins has made a DC movie with a female superhero as the lead that not only works, but is
spectacular to watch.
It’s an origin story, and the movie begins where Diana (Gal Gadot) began her life; the island of
Themyscira. The island is gorgeous and you get a glimpse of Diana in her youth, which I really
enjoyed. Knowing and seeing her passion to fight evil and wrong-doing from childhood makes you
root for her even more. Of course, any good warrior needs training and who better to train you
than your aunt. Antiope (Robin Wright) is that one bad ass aunt we girls have, or wished we had.
The one that teaches you the stuff your mom just can’t — or won’t, in this case. Robin Wright did a
very convincing job as Antiope. I almost didn’t recognize her when she made her appearance on
screen. She’s incredibly fierce and her fight scene is one of my favorite scenes, but I’m jumping
ahead.
Diana’s mother, Queen Hippolyta (Connie Nielsen), doesn’t want her to train or fight. Like any
mother, she wants to keep her daughter safe. Diana makes it to adulthood to realize she has
become more powerful than any woman on the island. Enter Steve Trevor (Chris Pine) via plane,
crashing into the waters off Themyscira. Diana saves Steve from the sinking plane and brings him
to the beach, along with the German navy that was chasing him. Thus ensue an epic battle scene
that I can only describe as a beautiful warrior ballet. I’ll just leave it at that.
Diana’s focus is on one thing, and for this purpose she must leave the island with Steve Trevor.
The contrast from the island of Themyscira to WWI Europe is so evident, I wanted to pull out my
phone and look up who the cinematographer was at that moment. Matthew Jensen did an amazing
job capturing the bleakness of that time. Diana’s story quickly becomes the “fish out of water”
story and Gal Gadot was mesmerizing. Now, this is where the good stuff starts happening.
Gadot’s portrayal of Wonder Woman is flawless. It’s been a long time coming, and I thought I
would never be able to accept anyone but Lynda Carter in the role, but Gal Gadot’s performance is
what makes this movie work. Diana’s awkwardness reminded me of Christopher Reeve’s
Superman. Like most women, she gushes over babies and loves ice cream. Like any good
superhero, you fight the bad guys…all the time. When she races across No Man’s Land with sword
and shield, I got tears in my eyes. Finally, Wonder Woman is here! Diana is naive about war and
her character development is what pushes the movie forward. I felt it worked, since it was her
origin story. Steve Trevor plays an important role in this development and Gadot and Pine’s onscreen chemistry did not disappoint.
My only criticism for the film would be the convoluted story around the god Ares and the amount
of CGI used for the movie’s climactic scene. It seemed like a basic principle at first and I loved the
Amazonians’ story and mythology, but it seemed to just get lost there towards the end for me.
Maybe for my 2nd viewing, I’ll pay closer attention. Yes, there will be a 2nd, 3rd…and you get the
picture.
Go see this movie. It’s a wonderful flick and we waited too long, so don’t wait any longer. Wonder
Woman is here!
Wonder Woman opens June 2, 2017
The Rogues Gallery podcast will drop on June 10th with a wave of everything Wonder Woman.
Plenty of discussion, opinion, and tons of spoilers; you’ll definitely want to listen to that.

POWERLESS Warms Up to “Cold Season”
Season 1, Episode 5: “Cold Season”
Written by Amy Mass
Directed by Clark Mathis
[All photos courtesy NBC Universal]
Ron, Teddy and Wendy (Jenni Pierson) have that cold feeling.
A hot day in Charm City…and everyone is wearing coats. Every spring, a cold-themed villain
invades Charm City. Who is it this year? Frostbite. Brrrr.
Teddy (Danny Pudi) has a new invention that’s just right for cold season: a pair of powered gloves
that will not only unfreeze objects but also heat up your coffee. Emily (Vanessa Hudgens) thinks
Teddy should enter them in the Wayne innovation contest. Teddy is reluctant to do so, but Emily
enters them behind his back. Jackie (Christina Kirk) tells her the story of the last time Teddy was
pushed into something like this…it wasn’t pretty.
Meanwhile, Van (Alan Tudyk) needs help putting together a Superman kiddie car for his
girlfriend’s kid; Jackie won’t do it, so he coerces Ron (Ron Funches) into doing it for him.
Teddy gets obsessed over getting the gloves to be perfect. It starts to push him to the edge…so
Emily tells him that they’ve made it to the finals (a lie).
Warm hands, bad ideas.
Van, meanwhile, calls Ron. Turns out the kid is a girl and she wants a Wonder Woman jet kiddie
car…which are invisible. Ron is willing to help, even though Wendy tells him that Van is taking
advantage of him.
The team from Wayne X drops by to rub it in Emily’s face that they won the contest. She goes to
Teddy at his apartment to tell him the bad news and meets his ultra-successful family including his
brother, the space doctor. Teddy is humiliated.
Back at work, Teddy seems fine, but when they start to work on a new version of the fear gas
detector, Teddy starts to freak out. So Emily tries to calm him down out on the balcony. Just then
Crimson Fox (Deanna Russo) lands on the balcony! Look out! Frostbite attacks and freezes
Crimson Fox in a sheet of ice.
Locked out of the office, they use the gloves to unfreeze the Fox and have a chat about what it’s
like to have over-achieving siblings. Unfrozen, Fox asks to use the gloves to defeat Frostbite.
Emily should really listen to Jackie more often.
Meanwhile, Van calls and asks for more and more from Ron. He snaps and tells Van off. Later, in
person, Van and Ron apologize to each other. Van asks for a treehouse, Ron is only happy to oblige
(sucker).
Marv Wolfman (Bill A. Jones) reports that cold season is over! Crimson Fox used the gloves to
defeat several cold-themed villains, and Teddy is very happy.
Analysis:
First off, this was such a fast paced episode, helped along by nifty Wayne Tech transitions
between scenes; very nice.
So many cold villains were listed it was fantastic. The one we get to see for a hot few seconds was
Frostbite. The only Frostbite I know in DC Universe lore was the hero Frostbite from “Young
Heroes in Love”. The answer to the riddle came from fellow SciFi4Me correspondent Jeff
Hackworth, who identified the character as Ice’s counterpart from Earth-3 in Justice League
Quarterly #8 (1992). [You can hear that exchange in the latest Rogues Gallery.]
We did get a good look at Crimson Fox in this episode as she got frozen by Frostbite. I like the
costume, but I’m not really sold on the actress’ performance.
Did I mention that this episode was jam packed? We had the cold villain wrapper, the “A” plot with
Teddy and Emily and the “B” plot with Van and Ron. The two plots would have been even better if
they had been a little longer. The way this episode went they both seemed short and tiny.
Van is a really a jerk. He takes advantage of Ron to put together kiddie cars for the brat of his
latest girlfriend. I gotta give them credit for the invisible jet car gag, impractical as it is. How did
he put that together? I’m also going to guess the kid loses it in a day. It would also seem like it
would be a safety hazard. Maybe safety laws are a little lax on Earth-P?
A big question here: after they gave the gloves to Crimson Fox, how did Emily and Teddy get back
into the office? They never melted the ice off the door. After she takes off, they’re still stuck on the
balcony. Did someone in the office call for help?
That is one handsome robot.
The team from Wayne X (sounds like an Elon Musk type of team) are really good. They built a
nearly human robot. Wonder if they have Professor Ivo working with them? Also, if they’re in the
same building, are there other tech teams in the same place?
Next episode, we learn the power of friendship…and how to use that to your advantage in
“Ima Friend You”.
Powerless airs Thursday at 8:30/7:30 Central on NBC. It can also be found on Hulu, Amazon, and
NBC.com. For more information, visit the official website.

The CW Renews All Fall Shows;
Resurrects John Constantine
The CW has announced renewals for pretty much everything, again.
Just prior to the network’s turn around the Television Critics Association winter tour, word came
that all the returning fall shows would get additional seasons: Arrow (season six), The Flash
(season four), DC’s Legends of Tomorrow and Supergirl (third seasons for each),
and Supernatural (season thirteen), which looks to be working to outlast network president Mark
Pedowitz just as he predicted.
Also picked up were the non-genre shows Crazy Ex-Girlfriend and Jane the Virgin.
“Over the past several seasons, The CW has built a schedule of proven performers, from our
lineup of DC superheroes, to critically acclaimed comedies, to sci-fi dramas,” said Pedowitz. “Early
pickups of these seven series now allow our producers to plan ahead for next season, and gives us
a solid base to build on for next season, with original scripted series to roll out all year long.”
The Vampire Diaries is the only veteran show not returning next year, closing out its run on the
network with its current eighth season. Freshmen shows No Tomorrow and Frequency have not
been renewed as of yet, nor did they get back orders for complete seasons, leading many to
conclude the shows won’t be back next year. But there’s still time between now and the official
announcements in May. Remember, critical darling and network exec fave Crazy Ex-Girlfriend got
renewed for a second season even though no one watches it.
https://twitter.com/cwseed/status/818151314915880962
Also announced at the TCA winter tour: the return of Constantine… sort of. Matt Ryan will reprise
his role in a new animated series on CW Seed, taking its place next to Vixen with a season of 10minute episodes (five or six, reports aren’t clear). Originally an NBC production, Constantine was
cancelled just as it was getting its legs, and Ryan had the opportunity to play the dabbler in the
dark arts on an episode of Arrow. Although there are still no more plans for crossovers, a new
animated series could be a step in that direction, as Vixen‘s Megalyn Echikunwoke played her
Mari McCabe in live-action form on Arrow as well.
All of this news follows a cryptic tweet from DC Comics president and chief creative officer Geoff
Johns:

iZombie hasn’t been renewed yet, and we know about the Black Lightning project that landed at
Fox, as well as Krypton over at Syfy. The inclusion of Lucifer in Johns’ list could hint that the new
DC show might not be on the CW. Unless he’s talking about the animated Constantine.
Could the Teen Titans show be back in business? Maybe the Justice Society spins out of Legends?
We will, of course, be discussing this news when the Rogues Gallery podcast returns next week.
