CS Exit Ticket 3: I can solve multistep ratio and percent problems. (7.RP.3)
KEY
1. At Carla’s Used Cars, Huan earns a commission that is 25% of the markup on the car. A convertible has a $400
markup. What is Huan's commission? Use the dollar sign ($) in your answer.
One strategy to find 25% of $400 is by setting up and solving a proportion:
25% = $ x
100% 400%
The scale factor from 100% to 25% is 1/4.
$25 x 1/4 = $100
100% x 1/4 = $400
Huan earns a $100 commission on the convertible.
2. At Carla's Used Cars, the markup is 10% of the buying price, the price at which Carla bought the car. If the
markup on the convertible is $400, what was the buying price of the convertible? Use the dollar sign ($) in your
answer.
One strategy to find the buying price is by setting up and solving a proportion:
$400 = $ x
10% 100%
The scale factor from 10% to 100% is 10.
$400 x 10 = $4000
10% x 10 = 100%
The buying price of the convertible was $4000.
3. Mr. Morse has a 32-ounce cup filled with Diet Pepsi. He drinks 21 ounces. What is the percentage of ounces that
he has left in his cup? Round your answer to the nearest tenth and use the percent sign (%) in your answer.
One strategy to find the percent of ounces left is by setting up and solving a proportion:
Note: He drank 21 ounces, so there are 11 ounces left (32-21 = 11).
11 = x%
32 100%
The scale factor from 32 to 100% is 3.125 (100 / 32 = 3.125).
11 x 3.125 = 34.4% (round to the nearest tenth: 34.4%)
32 x 3.125 = 100%
The cup has 34.4% left inside.
4. Jelia earns $600 per week. She receives a 15% raise. How can she calculate her new pay rate? Select ALL
calculations that will result in Jelia's new weekly pay rate.
A.
B.
C.
D.
E.
divide $600 by 0.15
divide $600 by 1.15
multiply $600 by 0.15
multiply $600 by 1.15
solve for x: x = 115
600 100
F. solve for x: 600 = 15
x 100
To find 15% of 600, you could set up and solve a proportion:
600 = x
100% 15%
The scale factor from 100% to 15% is 0.15 (15 / 100 = 0.15).
600 x 0.15 = 90
100% x 0.15 = 15%
Jelia's new weekly pay rate is $600 + $90 = $690.
Try each answer to see if you get x = 690.
5. Dave buys a baseball for $15 plus an 8% tax. Mel buys a football for $20 plus an 8% tax. Find the difference, in
dollars, of the amounts Dave and Mel pay, including tax. Round your answer to the nearest cent. Use a dollar sign
($) in your answer.
To find the cost of Dave's baseball (price of the baseball plus 8% tax means 108% of the price of the
baseball):
$15 = $x
100% 108%
The scale factor from 100% to 108% is 1.08 (108 / 100 = 1.08).
$15 x 1.08 = $16.20
100% x 1.08 = 108%
To find the cost of Mel's football (price of the football plus 8% tax means 108% of the price of the
football):
$20 = $x
100% 108%
The scale factor from 100% to 108% is 1.08 (108 / 100 = 1.08).
$20 x 1.08 = $21.60
100% x 1.08 = 108%
Mel's price - Dave's price = Difference
$21.60 - $16.20 = $5.40
6. A store is having a sale. Each customer receives either a 15% discount on purchases under $100 or a 20%
discount on purchases of $100 or more. Kelly is purchasing some clothes for $96.60 before the discount. She
decides to buy the fewest packs of gum that will increase her purchase to over $100. Each pack of gum costs $0.79.
After the discount, how much less will Kelly pay by purchasing the gum and the clothes instead of purchasing only
the clothes? (Assume there is no sales tax to consider.)
A.
B.
C.
D.
$1.05
$1.67
$3.69
$3.87
If Kelly only purchases the clothes, she will get 15% off of $96.60. She will pay 85% of the price.
One way to solve this is to set up and solve a proportion:
$96.60 = $ x
100%
85%
The scale factor from 100% to 85% is 0.85 (85 / 100 = 0.85).
$96.60 x 0.85 = $82.11
100% x 0.85 = 85%
If Kelly purchases the gum and clothes:
$96.60 + $0.79 = $97.39
$97.39 + $0.79 = $98.18
$98.18 + $0.79 = $98.97
$98.97 + $0.79 = $99.76
$99.76 + $0.79 = $100.55
She has to purchase 5 packs of gum to get her total above $100 ($96.60 + $3.95 = $100.55).
If Kelly purchases the gum and clothes, she will get 20% off of $100.55. She will pay 80% of the price.
One way to solve this is to set up and solve a proportion:
$100.55 = $ x
100%
80%
The scale factor from 100% to 80% is 0.80 (80 / 100 = 0.80).
100.55 x 0.80 = $80.44
100% x 0.80 = 80%
Find the difference in prices:
$82.11 - $80.44 = $1.67
