School Energy Audit Name: ________________________________ Grade:______________________________________ Room or Office:_____________________ ______Date:______________________________________ The Energy Audit will help you find out how efficiently your school is using energy and help you measure the impacts of your actions on saving energy. 1. When you came to the room were the lights on or off? ____ ON ____ OFF Who turns off the lights in the room? 2. Is there a sign that reminds you to turn off the lights? ___ YES 3. Were there people in the room? ____ YES ____ NO ____ NO 4. Is it a sunny day or a cloudy day? ____ SUNNY ____ CLOUDY 5. How many of these different types of light bulbs are found in the room? #______ #______ #_______ 6. How many computers/printers/equipment are turned off at the end of the day? ____________ Who turns them off? ___________________ Students should not turn off computers and equipment themselves. There may be reasons why they are left on or data that could be lost by switching them off. 7. How many phone chargers, tv’s or other equipment are plugged in when not in use (called “phantom loads” – because the equipment uses energy even when turned off – things with red lights). #_________ 8. How many mini-fridges are in the room? ____ Large fridges? _____ 9. How many windows are in the room? There are _________ windows in the room. How many of the windows have cracks in them? ________________ Do all the windows close all the way? ___ YES ___NO How many windows don’t close? __ 10. Do you know if other solar panels will be installed at your school (ask your teacher or principal)? ____YES _____NO 13. Please share ONE IDEA you have for how the school can save more electricity. 14. Information on lighting audit/energy calculator for lights (electricity): (Tips: most classrooms at BCSC are using T8’s which are 32 watts each; Mt. Healthy is using only T12s which are 40 watts (4ft.) or 96 watts (8ft.); Southside has about half T8s and half T12s.) A. Figure the watts of the light bulbs multiplied by the number of light bulbs divided by 1000 to get the kilowatt hour (32x34/1000=1.088) B. Figure the number of hours the lights on each day multiplied by the number of days per year they are used (8 hours x 180 days=1440 hours a year) C. Multiply A x B=Kilowatt hours per year( 1.088 x 1440=1,567) D. Multiply the kilowatt hours by cost of electricity (1,567 x .10=$156.67) which is the cost per year to run those light bulbs. Write this on the first line of the light switch card. E. Input data into CumminsEnergyCalculator (from Mrs. Geckler) to get the Carbon Footprint per year in either pounds per year or metric tons per year. Write this number on the second line of card.
