Chip Budding Lab Practicum Vocabulary Branch Vocabulary Parts of a Branch Leaf- makes food for plant. Vocabulary Parts of Branch 1) Terminal bud- contains new growth for plant. 2) Lateral bud- found on the plant where the petiole attaches to the branch 3) Leaf Scar- where a leaf was attached but now it is no longer there. 4) Bud Scar- marks the area where this seasons growth started. Last winter it was the terminal bud. Picture of parts of branch 1) Terminal bud on branch 2) lateral buds Picture of parts of branch 3) leaf scar Picture of parts of branch Bud scar Vocabulary Petiole- the part of the plant that connects the leaf blade to the branch Vocabulary Terminal bud gives growth that makes the tree get taller Vocabulary Cambium cause growth in trees so that they get fatter Vocabulary Grafting- a process of putting together two plants using a way that makes sure they will grow together like one plant Vocabulary The top right picture shows a branch( green color) being put on another plant. Scion- is the branch with green color Root stock -is lower fatter part Bottom picture is root stock by itself Example of a Grafted-tree The fatter part of the tree is the Scion The Scion becomes the shoot of the plant The skinny part is the root stock The root stock becomes the root part of the plant The area where they come together is the graft Vocabulary Bud- a part on the plant shoot that can grow into a branch, a leaf or a flower The picture on the right shows a leaf bud opening Vocabulary Chip Budding –is a special type of grafting that takes a lateral bud from one plant and puts it on a different plant A bud that will become a branch is removed from the scion Collecting Bud Scion Demonstration When doing Chip budding the scion is call bud wood If the movie does not play double click on the picture to see movie Step one in getting bud from bud wood Cut this years growth Look for bud scar and cut above Step 2 Remove leaves Remove the leaves from the bud stick Step 3 select buds Buds to be used have part of the petiole left The green part on the brown branch is part of a petiole Step four place bud stick in can The bud stick is placed in a can with a wet paper on the bottom Demonstration of preparing root stock If the movie does not play double click on the picture to see movie Demonstration of removing bud and chip budding If movie does not play double click on the picture to see movie Chip budding Step one Preparing root stock Select smooth even area on rootstock On Root stock make a short cut (5mm) below area where you will place bud from bud stick Step 2 Making top cut Start another cut 3.54cm above the first cut Step 3 remove piece of wood Join the two cuts by moving the knife downward Step four Remove wood piece and leave flap Step five Select bud stick and try to get same size as root stock Step Six To remove a lateral bud from bud stick: Make a short cut .5cm1cm below a bud. Start another cut above the bud and slide the knife down under the bud It should fit the cut on the rootstock. Step seven Match cambiums Step eight Put lateral bud under flap of root stock Step nine Wrap tape around top and bottom of lateral bud so that it is tight Step ten Place a tag with the plant name of the Scion Equipment and materials Budding tape- used to put the lateral bud on the root stock. Grafting knife- used to perform chip budding. Equipment and material Marking pen – use a pen that when the tag gets wet the writing will not go away Tag- is used to put on tree after you have finished chip budding so that you know the type of tree you have made. Diagram of Chip budding process Follow steps one through seven Step one Select a plant that is suitable for budding. Cut off some strong vegetative shoots with mature buds Step Two Discard the softer top growth on each budstick. Remove all the leaves from the stem Step Three Make a .5cm cut down into the rootstock stem Slice down to it from 3cm up the stem Remove the chip Step Four Make exactly similar cuts on the bud-stick Make sure that a bud is included half way down the chip Step Five Tuck the bud-chip into position on the rootstock. Cover the chip with clear bud tape Then label the budded plant Step Six Remove the tape once the bud has joined with the rootstock Step Seven Cut the rootstock right back, close above the bud, in winter The bud will start to grow next season Lab Report Give lab to Kevin Jones by September 26 You can send report by email: [email protected] or hand the report to me on September 26 Lab Report style Title for lab: Example: Chip Budding Lab Lab objective: In this part of the lab report, you write why we did the lab Materials: In this part of the lab report you write what equipment we used to make the collection You can include pictures in this section Lab procedure: In this part of the lab report you write what we did in lab. You can include pictures in this section. Write in a step by step style. Example: 1) We removed lateral bud by first making a cut below lateral bud Lab Report Style Lab results: In this part of the report write what you accomplished. Example: I performed chip budding five times Conclusion: In this part of the lab report write what you learned about chip budding
