In continuation of the note I have addressed to
you on October 27th last,* I have the honour to bring to
your notice some of the facts which have occurred since
that communication and concerning the indiscriminate bombing
and killing of Chinese non-combatants and other outrages
committed by the Japanese forces:
October 28th:
During an attack on the Lotien Liuho section
near Shanghai the Japanese used poison gas.
In Chapei, during tne evacuation of women and
children, the Japanese repeatedly machinegunnea crowds of,refugees, killing and
w ou nding a great number of them.
Ïïovembei- 1st:
20 Japanese planes bombed the villages of Suan
ang Miao, in tine nrovince of Hunan, .21
civilians were killed and many w o u n d e d •
November 8th:
A great number of villages around Sungkiang
and Kasning in tne Kiangsu province were b o m ­
barded by Japanese aviators.
All the mo t or ­
cars circulating between these t-*
.o cities and
the vessels for transporting refugees were
machine-gunned.
November 12th: 21 Japanese planes bombarded Loyang, Honan
province, and killed a great number of
civilians.
Also in the cities of Soochow
and '..j'usih, Kiangsu province, civilians and
foreign missionaries were killed or wounded.
November 14th
Japanese aviators threw 700 bombs on Soochow
where ma.^y civilians were killed and a Red
Cross unit destroyed.
December vth:
300 bombs were th?o ,n in an attack on Nanking
by 70 Japanese planes.
Many civilians were
killed.
The Nanchan^ Medical College and
'/omen’s Hospital, Kiangsi province, were
destroyed by air bombs and 80 persons were
killed.

December 12th:
The U.S. gunboat Panay was bombed and
sunk by Japanese planes 29 miles above
Hanking.
fhe British gunboat Ladybird
and British merchant ships were also
attacked by Japanese.
December 15th:
and following
days :
Japanese troops upon entering Nanking
carried out a systematic plunder of the
city.
Women were assaulted and tend
of thousand of people were slaughtered
in a few days.
The atrocities committed
by the Japanese in Hanking and neighbouring towns stagger human imagination.
Streets were strewn w i t h numberless
corpses among which .hundreus of stripped
young women bearing bayonet wounds
evidently butchered after carnal' attack.
December 23rd :
and following
days :
Following the entry of Japanese troops
in Hangchow, an orgy of wholesale kill­
ing, looting and raping lasted for'
several days.
Thousands of civilians
were massacred and hundreds of women
violated.
December 2 6 t h :
In Sorth-Kiangsu and North-Anhwei Japan­
ese air raids' killed hundreds of civilians
and refugees.
December 2 8 t h :
Japanese marines landed on 7;ongcum
island, near Macao, killed-a number of
peaceful islanders and plundered their
home s .
December 2931st:
Japanese planes heavily bombed .Taian,
Shantung province, dropping 700 bombs,
killing or .wounding 200 civilians.
December 31st :
40 Japanese planes raidei Canton.
Among the buildings damaged were three
schools.
The number of casualties
was 36, including 5 children.
January 7th:
During a Japanese air raid on vuhan,
Hupeh province, 40 civilians were
killed.
January 8th:
Japanese troops -massacred 40 villagers
in Ho Àai Tsun, Shansi province.
January 10th:
Japanese slaughtered innocent villa6 ers
artiund Taiku and Chihsien, Snansi
province.
January 12th:
Japanese troops after the occupation of
Tsining, Shantung province, created there a
reign of terror, massacring helpless
civilians.
January 24th :
In I-chang, Hupeh province, 40 civilians were
killed by a raid of 12 Japanese bombers.
First week of
February:
Japanese planes bombed indiscriminately open
villages and towns around Canton.
Numerous
lives and homes were destroyed in entirely
non-military areas . Hundred planes
participated in the raids.
February 15th:
In Cheng Chow, Honan, 200 civilians were
killed or wounded by Japanese air-bombs.
The
American Methodist M i s s i o n ’s Hospital was hit
by 3 bombs.
About 20 hotels, a great number
of industrial buildings and 500 houses were
destroyed.
February 17th:
Japanese planes bombed I-chang, Hupeh province,
and Changsha, H u n a n province, destroying
civilian lives and property.
F eb ruary 28th :
Paoteh, Shensi province, was looted by 700
Japanese soldiers and 40 peasants were killed.
March 8th:
2 Italian Fathers were killed in the bombard­
ment of
Chengchow, where their mission was
situated.
20 houses were demolished.
March 10th:
The German Church in Linyi, Shantung, was
bombed.
4 Chinese refugees in the church were
killed, and 13 wounded.
The German flag was
flying over the church,
March 10-12th:
Japanese troops massacred over one thousand
villagers at Tsao Chi a Tien, No r th - A n h w e i .
M a r c h 17th:
300 Japanese soldiers looted again Paoteh.
About 100 civilians were killed and many
committed suicide.
March 27th:
Japanese air raid on Wuhan, Hupeh, killed
110 civilians and wounded 114 civilians
including a large percentage of w o m e n and
children.
March 29 th:
5 Japanese planes bombed IVaichow, Kwangtung.
An Am er i c a n Missi o n a r y , Rev. Anderson, was
driving in an automobile which was machinegunned.
In Shanghai a Chinese old man was
thrown by Jap'nese soldiers into the Soochow
Creek.
His body was covered with marks of
severe beating.
April 9th:
Japanese troops retreating from Yihsien,
Shantung, massacred m m y refugees.

April 10th :
In Shantung, 600 civilians were killed byJapanese air b o m b s . 27 Japanese planes raided
Cha ngsha, Hunan province, and bombed the
National Un i versity of Hunan and the Tsinghua
University which was transferred from Peiping
to Changsha since the opening of hostilities.
The library, the science building, the workshop
and three dormitories of the Hunan University
were destroyed.
The raiders swooped down and
machine-gunned groups of students at the Tsinghua
University, killing .30 and wounding 70 of them.
In Canton 4 Japanese planes bombed the centre of
the city.
A sewing factory where 500 girls were
working was hit by a b o m b . It is feared that
none of them esc ap e d.
April 1 0 t h :
The Japanese f o r c e s , before evacuating the
region of Kwangteh, Chekiang province, burned
about 300 villages and killed more than 4,000
c ivi l ia ns .
April 1 6 t h :
51 Japanese planes flying low, machine-gunned
the centre of Canton and bombed the school
d is tr i c t . The dormitories of the middle school
and the municipal primary school and 53 houses
around were destroyed.
The total, number of
killed was 136 and 122 were seriously i n j u r e d .
April 29th:
Japanese planes bombed the isolation hospital
of the League of Nations anti-epidemic mission,
killing two and wounding three Chinese members
of the staff.
