A brief introduction to
the Considerate Constructors Scheme –
a construction industry scheme to encourage
best practice beyond statutory requirements
What is the Considerate Constructors Scheme?
A construction industry scheme aimed at encouraging best practice
beyond statutory requirements for every type of construction activity
and for companies and sites of all types and size (over 60,000 sites have
registered for the scheme since it was launched in 1997)
The Scheme’s Site (or Company) Code of Considerate Practice
covers three main categories
– the general public
reducing the impact of construction activity on anyone affected by the work and aiming to
leave a positive impression on neighbours
– the workforce
being a considerate employer, providing clean and appropriate facilities for workers and
treating every employee with respect
– the environment
reducing any negative impact on the environment and working in an environmentally
conscious and sustainable manner
The purpose and principles of the Considerate
Constructors Scheme
to provide a voluntary scheme, founded on the
encouragement of best practice beyond statutory
requirements, working with construction companies sites
to improve their relationship with their neighbours, the
general public and the environment
to reward the best performing sites
to improve the image of the construction industry
What does registering for the Considerate
Constructors Scheme mean?
Sites need to be registered before work commences
Monitors visit registered sites and/or companies and
assess their level of compliance against the Scheme’s
Site (or Company) Code of Considerate Practice
Monitors are drawn from the senior ranks of all
disciplines within the construction industry i.e. architects,
engineers, contractors and surveyors
The Scheme’s Code has 5 areas – Appearance,
Community, Environment, Safety and Workforce
Scoring and recognition
Each of the 5 sections is scored out of 10

5 or more points in each of the 5 sections earns a
Certificate of Compliance, 7 or more points in each earns
a Certificate of Performance Beyond Compliance
Around 7.5 % of top scoring companies go on to be
selected by an independent panel for a National Site
Award at Gold, Silver or Bronze level.

Constructors should ensure sites appear professional and well
managed
2. Respecting the COMMUNITY
Constructors should give utmost consideration to their impact on
neighbours and the public
3. Protecting the ENVIRONMENT
Constructors should protect and enhance the environment
4. Securing everyone’s SAFETY
Constructors should attain the highest levels of safety performance
5. Caring for the WORKFORCE
Constructors should provide a supportive and caring working
environment

Does the Considerate Constructors Scheme have
any drawbacks?
Yes it does:
As with all schemes of this nature,
compliance is critical
You really do have to do more than comply
Good scores are easy to achieve
