Program description: As mindfulness and meditation practices leave the meditation halls of spiritual communities and
increasingly become integrated into multiple facets of Western culture—psychology, mental
and physical health care, education, business, even in sports and the military—it is important
that as responsible prescribers of mindfulness and meditation we understand the psychospiritual (and cultural) complexities of these practices. Whether inside or outside meditation
practice communities, it is increasingly becoming clear that these practices are not always as
straightforward, beneficial and harmless as we may have thought. As the Zen saying goes, “A right tool in the wrong hand becomes a wrong tool.” In this program, we will explore the origins of Western mindfulness practices, specifically
considering Buddhism (the early core teachings) as a psychology, i.e., a study of “mind.” Its
relevance as a complementary psychological theory and practice to contemporary counseling
practices (including counseling ethics) will be examined. From this perspective, we will
contemplate the nature of mind and explore how the ways we relate to mind-body states and
life experiences affect our health and well-being. We will examine the role of mindfulness in
disentangling the mental knots we create that contribute to stress and unhappiness inside
ourselves and in relationships with others.
In addition, integrating mindfulness practices into our own daily lives is important and
beneficial for mental health professionals and caregivers. We will explore how mindfulness
practices enhance therapeutic presence, improve empathic/ compassionate response and aid
in the prevention of “burn-out” and “compassion fatigue.”
The program will be comprised of an integration of lecture, discussion, video presentations, and experiential exercises and practices. Topics we will cover: •
