In Bamana mythology, a creature half-antelope and half-human teaches
the Bamana people agriculture. This striking figure of a male antelope
would have been worn in ritual dances performed in hope of a successful
harvest.
Our headdress was once in the estate of Belgian dealer and collector
Baron Freddy Rolin, who was famously the owner of the last Vermeer
painting available for sale.
It is a strong example of its kind, with an almost Art Deco elegance in the
arching horns and openwork mane. Dimensions do not include the wicker
base, which is 4 1/2" high x 8" deep x 7" wide.
