The Frager History: Frank "Fritz" Frager
immigrated from Russia around 1902 after
traveling across Europe, where he became
skilled in many languages, making him
successful in business. After he was laid off
from the Navy Yard, where he worked as a
cabinet maker, he decided to open his own
business. With only $5,000 in borrowed money,
he was able to open a hardware store 11 blocks
from the United States Capitol in 1920, where it
still stands today. The business had become so
successful, the store’s first expansion took
place during the Great Depression. After Frank’s
untimely passing, his sons; George & Jules, who
had worked in the store since childhood, ran the
operation for many years. They eventually grew
tired of the daily grind and decided to put the
store up for sale in 1969. However, it wasn’t
until 1975 that the operation would change
hands.
Ed & John: Being the only two gentlemen who
weren’t from the Richmond area in their Phi
Kappa Sigma fraternity at the University of
Virginia, the outsiders immediately formed a
lasting friendship. They roomed together during
college, and after graduation, went to serve in
the armed forces. John joined the Coast Guard
and Ed volunteered in the Navy. They both did
tours in Vietnam. When they reconnected again
at George Washington University getting their
masters; Ed in Engineering Administration and
John in Business, they decided to go into
business together. Their search to find an
operation to run lasted over a year, but in 1975,
they came back around to the first store they
visited, Frager’s Hardware. And, the rest, as
they say, is history.
Today the business has grown to include a
robust garden center, a rental store and a paint
shop. As the neighborhood prospered through
the years, so has Frager’s. It still has that
old-fashioned hardware store charm.
