Transitions
Lindy and I so appreciate everyone who came out and
joined us for the Farewell Dinner and Roast. It was a
great gathering with a delicious BBQ dinner and desserts.
The “Roast” was a lot of fun and we shared a lot of good
laughs. We especially want to thank you for the Nambe
nativity set and platter which is already displayed on our
new hutch in the main entrance area of our new home.
Needless to say, Lindy and I have been truly blessed to
serve here at Mountainside these past nine years.
I am especially thankful to have been able to serve the
longest tenure at this church. You are a great congregation and I feel you have taught me much over the years.
Hopefully, we have grown some together in our walk with
Christ. I am also going to miss working with our great staff
that I have been blessed to serve with over the past years.
I do want to express to you my gratitude over your
faithfulness to serve and support the body of Christ here
at Mountainside and its many ministries. You have been
faithful in supporting Mountainside with your prayers,
presence, gifts, service and witness and as a result, the
church and its ministries are going well. The church is
also in good shape financially. All the teams and committees are continuing to be led by caring members with solid
leadership gifts and graces and for this I am thankful. I also want to encourage
your ongoing support and faithfulness to the Mountainside family as we transition
to new leadership under Pastor Doug Mills. He will do a fine job and I know he
will greatly appreciate your prayers and support during this transition of taking on
the pastoral leadership of this congregation.
Finally, This coming Sunday June 4 will be my last Sunday preaching and I look
forward to sharing some of my favorite memories and humorous experiences over
the years serving at Mountainside UMC. I especially look forward to sharing
together in the sacrament of communion. See you Sunday.
In God’s Grace,
John

Introductions
Dear friends,
Christy and I, along with Sarah and Jackson, are
looking forward to our move and to working with you
in ministry. We very much appreciate that you created
a transition liaison whom we have been working with.
You have already made us feel welcome.
A little about our kids: Sarah, who is 20, has just
finished her sophomore year at the University of New
Mexico. She is taking summer classes while also working. Sarah is a speech sciences and communications
major and minors in Art studio. Sarah enjoys dance,
art, skiing and the outdoors. Jackson, who is 16, just
finished his junior year of high school at New Mexico
Connections Academy. Jackson is a Jui Jitsu black belt
and accomplished in American karate. Jackson also
enjoys fishing, hiking and horseback riding and skiing. They will both be around quite a bit and they are
excited about getting to know you, too.
What do we do when we are not doing something at
church? Jackson and I love to fish and hike and build
an occasional project. Sarah and Jackson and I love to
snow ski. We all enjoy movies, Isotopes games and any
family type activities we can come up with.
We will be moving into the parsonage the week of
June 21st and will be in church on June 25th. My first
Sunday in the pulpit will be July 2nd. And we hope
to schedule some “meet-and-greets” soon after that to
begin to meet all of you.
In Christ,
Pastor Mills

Adult Mission trip to Appalachia:
Henderson Settlement, Frakes,
Kentucky, Spring 2018
Our Mission trip volunteers will adopt home
repair projects for one week for less fortunate families of
the Laurel Fork Valley of southeastern Kentucky. Our
volunteers will meet during the summer of 2017 and
select a week to work in the Spring of 2018. We will
need volunteers for Project leaders, Bible leader, Travel
leader, and Fundraiser leader. We will eat and sleep at
facilities at Henderson Settlement, a Mission Agency of
the United Methodist Church. Come and help us share
the love of Christ by meeting basic needs of those in
Appalachia! I will be sitting at a table between services
on June 11, 18, and 25. with information and for questions and planning.
The Henderson Mission Trip’s first fundraiser will be
in late August: a church-wide garage sale! Please start
saving your treasures! A storage pod will be in place at
church in early August.

Honor Your Father and Your Mother
This past month, we celebrated our mothers and all moms of every kind
for Mother’s Day. On May 14, in addition to the presentation of roses
during both worship services, our youth came in early and prepared a
Mother’s Day Brunch with love for those who give us so much love and
support every day. We flipped pancakes, made berry salad, cut roses, and
enjoyed an early Sunday morning in honor of our moms.
“Honor your
father and your
mother,
that your days
may be long
upon the land
which the
Lord your God
is giving you.”
– Exodus 20:12
This month, we will also honor our fathers, step-fathers, grandfathers, and adoptive
fathers of every kind. Come celebrate with us on June 18th, at 12:15, when we will
be having a Father’s Day BBQ for all, immediately following second service. Weather
permitting, we will be enjoying the summer day outside with horse shoes and other
games. Sign up outside the sanctuary or contact Tifani at [email protected] or 417-6309 to volunteer to cook, serve, or donate.

Youth News
School’s Out Celebration and Impromptu Youth Lock In
Summer is here and that means school is out! On
May 20th, nearly 30 children and youth, ages 1-18
joined us in the Mountainside Activity Center (MAC)
and Welcome Center to play games, make art, eat food,
share laughs, and celebrate the end of our school year
and the beginning of summer! We enjoyed things like
tasty pizza, dodgeball, relay races with team prizes, free
basketball, beading crafts, melted crayon art, jenga,
twister and other board games. Thank you to each and
every volunteer that made this possible! What a great
way to start the summer off for not only our kids, but
for our parents, who got to enjoy an extra Parent’s
Night Out this month. Join us for our next PNO on
July 14th.
After the School’s Out Celebration, we invited all
youth, 6th grade and up, to join us for an impromptu
Youth Lock-In. We do our best to support the ideas
that any of our youth bring to us and I would like to
thank Philip Krout for continuing to bring me ideas,
including this Lock-In, which he took the time and
initiative to organize. I also want to thank Kat Crider
for being so willing to not only stay for the Lock In but
to stay awake so that I could sleep before teaching class
the next day. This was short notice for most but 8 youth
made it happen and we enjoyed making the MAC
stage our movie theater, and camp site, for the evening.
Thank you to all the parents that spent extra time from
their evening to bring sleeping bags and changes of
clothes so that we could enjoy this great fellowship.
This event proved that spontaneous events are the best!
