COMMON CORE MATHEMATICS
I am Learning to…
ο‚— Add and subtract integers.
Real-World
ο‚— You can add and subtract integers to describe
changes, such as a football team’s movement on the
field. If a team loses 9 yards and then gains 9 yards,
it is back where it started:
βˆ’9 + 9 = 0
Vocabulary Section 1-3
ο‚— Additive Inverses- two numbers whose sum is 0.
Key Concept: Adding Integers
ο‚— Same Sign: The sum of two positive integers is
positive. The sum of two negative integers is
negative.
ο‚— Different Signs: Find the absolute value of each
integer. Subtract the lesser absolute value from the
greater. The sum has the sign of the integer with the
greater absolute value.
Example 1: Adding Integers
ο‚— βˆ’12 + 30=
ο‚— βˆ’12 + (βˆ’3)=
Key Concept: Subtracting Integers
ο‚— To subtract an integer, add its opposite.
π‘Ž βˆ’ 𝑏 = π‘Ž + βˆ’π‘
π‘Ž βˆ’ βˆ’π‘ = π‘Ž + 𝑏
Example 2: Subtracting Integers
ο‚— 8 βˆ’ βˆ’4 =
ο‚— βˆ’23 βˆ’ βˆ’11 =
ο‚— βˆ’140 βˆ’ 60 =
ο‚— A scuba diver goes 94 ft below the surface of the
ocean and then descends 87 ft farther. What is the
diver’s depth?
