 Add and subtract integers.
Real-World
 You can add and subtract integers to describe
changes, such as a football team’s movement on the
field. If a team loses 9 yards and then gains 9 yards,
it is back where it started:
−9 + 9 = 0
Vocabulary Section 1-3
 Additive Inverses- two numbers whose sum is 0.
Key Concept: Adding Integers
 Same Sign: The sum of two positive integers is
positive. The sum of two negative integers is
negative.
 Different Signs: Find the absolute value of each
integer. Subtract the lesser absolute value from the
greater. The sum has the sign of the integer with the
greater absolute value.
Example 1: Adding Integers
 −12 + 30=
 −12 + (−3)=
Key Concept: Subtracting Integers
 To subtract an integer, add its opposite.
𝑎 − 𝑏 = 𝑎 + −𝑏
𝑎 − −𝑏 = 𝑎 + 𝑏
Example 2: Subtracting Integers
 8 − −4 =
 −23 − −11 =
 −140 − 60 =
 A scuba diver goes 94 ft below the surface of the
ocean and then descends 87 ft farther. What is the
diver’s depth?
