Camporee Guidebook
“Be a Hero”
2017 Camporee Purpose
The focus of this camporee is on helping scouts develop and show scout spirit. This will be accomplished as the
scouts have fun participating in activities that require teamwork and cooperation. As it states in the Scout Law,
a scout is; helpful, friendly, courteous, kind…Cheerful. The event staff will be looking for the demonstration of
these attributes in all scouts throughout each activity. Correction and encouragement will be given as needed
to help the scouts improve and become heroes.
Theme: “Be a Hero”
All of us are Heroes, we just need to discover our superpowers and use them for good. For this camporee,
each Patrol needs to create a superhero for their Patrol name. It should have a name, superpowers, and
weaknesses. Be different, don’t go for the established heroes but create new ones – for example: Taco Man,
Snake Boy, or The Pillow. (Try out a superhero name generator online.)
Patrol Yell and Flag:
Now let’s show off this Hero of yours. Create a new flag and yell/cheer specifically for this camporee. The
Patrol yell and flag should represent the theme of the Camporee. Decorate the flag based on your
“superhero.” Hoist your flag and shout your yell proudly. All flags are to be constructed entirely by Scouts. The
flagpole is also part of the flag and can be as creative as the flag. The flag must be with the Patrol at the time
the yell is given in order to get full points during Saturday’s activities.
Who should come?
We welcome all Scouts and Scout Troops in the Mesa District. Although for the most part the activities are
geared towards the 11 to 14 year olds. We would like to especially invite the 11yr old scout Patrols to attend.
We are only 30min away, so an overnight stay isn’t even required, just be here at 6:30am to check in and be at
the flag/opening ceremony at 7:30am Saturday Morning. Camporees are a great opportunity to watch our
Scouts work as a patrol and come together as friends, and of course have a great time.
Registration:
Registration is completed on line at the Mesa District section of the Grand Canyon Council Web site. You should
register as soon as possible. Registration will be taken online up to Saturday February 25th, 2017. When you have
finished your internet registration and payment, make a copy of your registration from the website. You will need to
turn this in when you check in at the camporee site.
Cost:
The cost for the camporee is $6 per participant. A participant is defined as youth or leader attending the Camporee. It
will cost $8 per participant if you register after Wednesday February 25th, 2017. Your fee is only used to pay for the
awards, patches, supplies, liability insurance and the cost of the site.
Location:
The camporee will be held at the Schnepf Farm 24810 East Rittenhouse Rd. Queen Creek, AZ (See map info
below). We wanted to have our Camporee close by so all could attend. We hope this will make it easier to get
to the campsite earlier Friday evening, and request everyone to stay until after the closing ceremonies on
Saturday.

responsible for maintaining all other forms and records. No Troop will be allowed to go to their campsite until
they have completed the check-in process. Your Patrol will lose 20 points to their overall score potential for
not having all of the above forms at check in.
CHECK-IN Saturday Morning (11yr Old Scouts):
Check-in from 6:30 PM to 7:15 AM at the entrance. If you were registered and paid for by the Troop You will
not need a Registration Form and Patrol Roster. All other check-in is the same.
Medical Consent Forms:
Each Scout attending the Camporee, must possess a Class 1 or greater medical consent form. A parent or
guardian for each Scout must sign the medial consent form.
Parental Consent Forms:
Each Scout attending the Camporee, must possess a parental permission form. This form must be signed by a
parent or guardian and may be combined with the Medial Consent Form.
Camp Set Up:
Campsites are organized by Troop and Stake. Unload and set up your camp site for the camporee. Don’t
spread out any further than you need to. Rope off your camp site Have all vehicles in the designated parking
lots. Prepare, eat and clean up dinner and prepare for the Campfire which starts promptly at 8:00pm.
Parking:
Vehicles will be allowed to transport gear to the designated campsites. Once the gear has been unloaded at
the campsite, that vehicle must return to the parking lot. Trailers unhitched may stay in camp. All vehicles are
to remain in the parking lot. All non-trailered vehicles should be backed into each designated parking space to
help with evacuation in case of emergency. Absolutely no vehicles (other than equipment trailers) may be left
in campsites without a special permit from the Camporee Committee. Any vehicles not out of the camp site
area by 7:30p.m found in camp Saturday morning will result in a deduction of 20 points per vehicle from the
Patrols total points. If there is a necessity for a vehicle to remain in camp, authorization must come from the
District Camporee Committee.
It’s really hard to make an open field feel like a cozy camping spot, especially when it looks like your camping
in a parking lot. Thank you for your support.

(Each activity is worth up to 30 points x 17 activities = 510 total points + 90 other possible points = 600 points)
Awards and Scoring:
There is a maximum of 30 points for each activity. You will only participate in each activity once. Some
activities may have 2 stations running the same activity, you only be able to participate in one of the stations.
The score card is a record of your points during the camporee. It is you responsibility to keep this with you at
all times. Scorecards will be turned in at Camporee Head Quarters no later than 11:45pm on Saturday. Ribbons
will be awarded at the closing Ceremony at 12:00pm. Patrols must be present to receive their Ribbon. If they
are absent they are disqualified and the next Patrol will receive that place. Ribbons will consist of First Place,
Second Place and Third Place and are based upon overall Patrol score. Prizes will also be given at the Campfire
Program to the Patrols with the best song, best skit (Sign up now!), best Flag, best Yell.
Activities:
There are not separate classes to pass off rank requirements this year. Our focus is to help the Scouts develop
attributes found in the Scout Law and become Heroes. So work together as a Patrol to decide what activities
to participate in. Find an activity that is unoccupied, or is just finishing up. Don’t wait too long in lines, stay
active. If you are waiting for a Patrol to finish, be courteous and don’t interfere.
Each activity should last between 10-20 min.
The score card should be filled out at the end of each activity.
Event Staff will give you guidance to help you strengthen as a Patrol throughout the day.
Adults/Leaders:
Camporee is an activity that is based upon the Patrol method. There is no reason for adults to help their
Patrols during the events. If adults other than event staff are seen assisting the Patrols, points will be
deducted for that Patrol. So bring a chair, hold a flag and take lots of pictures, but let the scouts work through
the activities alone. (Hint; Now is the time to be coaching them. Everything they need to know is in this packet.
Have the SPL read this packet to the Patrol).
Size of Patrols:
The activities and camporee objectives will work best having Patrols with 4 – 10 Scouts. Patrols need to have
at least 4 boys to effectively participate. Smaller units or units with low attendance who cannot meet the 4
boy minimum will be paired up with other units with like conditions. If your Patrol is larger than 10 Scouts
please break into smaller Patrols. Remember, each Patrol should have their own superhero, flag and yell.
Uniforms:
Traveling in field uniform (class A) is strongly encouraged by the Grand Canyon Council (insurance purposes)
and we are asking that all Troops traveling to and from the Camporee adhere to this request of the Council.
Remember to wear the uniform properly and wear it proudly! For flag raising Saturday morning, all scouts are
expected to be in field uniform (class A). All scouts are expected to be in same chosen uniform (class A or B)
for the rest of the Camporee.
Patrol Method:
This Camporee is based upon the Patrol method. Patrols should arrive at each activity together. When
requested, the SPL should give the event staff their score card and introduce themselves, and lead the Patrol
in their yell. If there is a Patrol finishing up an activity, the Patrol waiting should be respectful. Patrol Leaders
should ensure that all Patrol members have the opportunity to participate throughout the Camporee. By
simply alternating scouts between activities, everyone should get an equal opportunity to participate.
Scout Spirit:
The focus of this camporee is on helping scouts develop and show scout spirit. This will be accomplished as the
scouts have fun participating in activities that require teamwork and cooperation. As it states in the Scout Law,
a scout is; helpful, friendly, courteous, kind…Cheerful. The event staff will be looking for the demonstration of
these attributes in all scouts throughout each activity. Correction and encouragement will be given as needed
to help the scouts improve.
Lost and Found:
Turn in any found items to the Camporee Head Quarters.
Items not claimed after the second District Roundtable following the camporee will be donated.
Trash/Campsites/Checkout:
Campsites will be assigned. All units are responsible for their own garbage collection. Bring garbage bags with
you. Campsites and surrounding common areas must be policed for litter immediately prior to checkout. All
trash must be picked up and packed out. Nothing should be left behind. Troops must checkout with the
Camporee Committee before leaving their campsites.
First Aid:
Each unit should have their own first aid kit, and be prepared to treat minor injuries. There will be qualified
medical personnel at the Camporee Headquarters to treat medical emergencies.
Weather:
Bad weather never stopped Batman. In the event of rain or heat, the camporee will continue as planned.
Patches:
Each registered Scout and Scouter will receive a Camporee patch on Saturday afternoon after successful
completion of the unit’s campsite inspection. If you leave early you may not get a patch. Any extra patches will
be available for sale at the first Roundtable following Camporee.
Prohibited Items:
The following items are prohibited per B.S.A. regulations, or district rules: Sheath knives, firearms, and
ammunition Electronic games, radios, CD/MP3 players, Bows and arrows, wrist rockets, and sling shots,
fireworks, explosives, propellants, spray paint, pepper spray, laser pointers, squirt guns and water balloons.
Camp Courtesy and Restricted Areas:
Schnepf Farms is a working farm. There are two large fields we have been invited to use. These, along with the
parking lot, will be the only areas we will need to be in. The parking area is off-limits to youth, except upon
arrival and departure for unloading and loading gear.
The orchards are off limits. The buildings and property on the edges of the two fields we will be using are
private homes with people living in them. Stay out. In years past scouts have played around on those
properties and caused damage to private property. We are grateful to be invited back. Please remember that
your unit’s behavior reflects upon the reputation of the entire Scouting association. Observe the Scout Oath
and Scout Law at all times.
Supervision:
Unit leaders are responsible for monitoring their Scouts during all free-time and in-camp periods.
Patrol leaders should take charge of the patrol during the Saturday events.
Restrooms:
Porta-Johns will be on site for use. Please help us keep the insides of the facilities clean and neat. Units should bring
their own, soap, wash tub and hand sanitizer. Just sayin.
Meals:
All units should make provisions for their own meals. The Camporee will not be offering meal service. Please
note the schedule and make sure meals can be prepared, enjoyed, and cleaned up in the time allotted.
Saturday is going to be an early morning and a late arrival home. Have Scouts bring snacks that can be eaten in
between activities or at the closing ceremonies. The schedule is tight, we’re trying to pack as much into this
experience as we can for you and your scouts.
Water:
There is a potable water spigot north of the Camporee site, near the parking area. Although it will be easier to
bring the water you will need for your campsite with you. Water will be available at each of the activity areas
to refill your personal water bottles.
Friday Evening Campfire Program:
We have space for 10 Patrols to provide a Song or Skit.
If a Patrol would like to perform a Song (or lead a sing along) or Skit for the Friday evening Campfire please
submit your “Campfire Request to Perform Form” on or before March 25th for approval. A prize will be given
for the best song and one for best skit. Feel free to bring props and costumes.
