Fourth Sunday of Advent
December 22, 2013
They shall name him Emmanuel,
which means “God is with us.” — Matthew 1:23
EMMANUEL
To name someone or something means
that we have a relationship with that
entity. Family names identify us with our
heritage; nicknames denote familiarity or
a special bond. In the Old Testament, the
meaning of a name ran deep. It identified one’s mission,
even one’s very being. The amazing name “Emmanuel”
was first uttered by Isaiah as he described to the frightened
King Ahaz the promised one who would come to redeem the
people.
Emmanuel is not a frightening philosophical name, such
as Omnipotent, Omniscient, Almighty. It does not connote
distance and transcendence. It does not generate
reverential fear. The name Emmanuel implies closeness
and intimacy and compassion. Emmanuel is the name given
to the one who is coming. It means “God is with us.” God is
entrusted to the care of a virgin, who will bear this child.
Only God would be so compassionate to draw so near, to
be so available and vulnerable. Only God could love this
well.

CHRISTMAS MESSAGE 2013
My Dear Parishioners,
Let us rejoice with Our Blessed Mother and St. Joseph as
we again celebrate this most holy feast of Christmas, and as
a special gift to our Infant Savior, let us offer Him our hearts
and our souls.
The feast of Christmas is a feast of joy and peace. We recall
that God now dwells among us, that He has entered into our
time and our history and that He is truly our Father and we
are truly His children. The peace of Christmas is the peace
of God’s loving presence; it is the peace of His Son and His
Spirit who lives among us and guides us. This is the peace
that we are now called upon to share, the peace that is
given to all those who are able to believe in the mystery of
God’s abounding love for all of us.
This is Fr. Erick’s (my co-worker here in the vineyard of the
Lord) and my first Christmas with you, our dear parishioners
of Holy Angels. With our Deacons, our Dominican Sisters
and our Parish Staff, our Christmas wishes are sent to you
together with grateful thanks for your very kind cooperation
and generous support during these past several months.
May the grace and peace of the Infant Savior be felt in
your family, in your heart and in your home this Christmas
and during the coming New Year 2014!
Fr. Alex L. Legaspi, Fr. Erick Arauz,
and Parish Staff
Do I have to attend Mass on Christmas?
In our culture, Christmas has become a warm
and wonderful time to gather with friends and
family, a time to exchange gifts of love, and a time to enjoy
family traditions. But first and foremost, Christmas
celebrates the Incarnation - the fact that the Son of God
assumed a human nature in order to accomplish our
salvation in it.
There is nothing the world can offer us that compares to
the fact that God “so loved the world that He gave his only
Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but
have eternal life” (John 3:16). God came and lived among
us and rose from the dead to save us. He is still with us and
offers us eternal life. That’s what Christmas celebrates. So,
yes, we do have to go to Mass to worship, adore, and offer
thanks to the One who makes our salvation possible. He
was born on Christmas.
Remember, Christmas is a Holy Day of Obligation when
all Catholics are obliged to attend Mass.
God bless you.
Fr. Alex

The first collection and the second collection will be in
next week’s bulletin due to publisher’s deadline. When
he discovered that Mary was with child, Joseph
resolved to end their engagement with as little disgrace as
possible. But obedient to the voice of God, he changed those
plans and became instead the protector of the child Jesus
and His mother, Mary. God grant that I may be as open to the
leading of the Holy Spirit!

VEN, SEÑOR
Ven, Señor, a salvarnos, ven a dar libertad.

E s t a s e m a n a c el e b r a m o s e l
gracias a Juan Crisóstomo y al Papa Julio I. Otras fuentes
