AGENDA
Wednesday, June 22, 2016
Renaissance Woodbridge Hotel
515 US Highway 1 South
Iselin, NJ 08830
10:00 – 10:30 am
The art and science of decision-making: why data matters
Speaker: Gary Owen, President, MITS
Studies have shown that making decisions without access to accurate data
actually leads to decisions that are “worse than random.” This fact is particularly
challenging for distributors as the very nature of their business model leads to
massive amounts of data that is more often than not hard to access and analyze.
Gary will share insights on how we process data and make the decisions—large
and small—that impact the performance and results of a distribution business.
10:30 – 10:50 am
Timely data access: a key driver of business success
Speaker: Marc Bodner, CEO, L&R Distribution
Data mining and analytics are a key component of L&R Distribution’s success—
internally, as well as with retail partners. Marc will discuss how his team uses
analysis of financial statements as the driver for more timely, accurate, and
actionable information across the company. Early and easy access to financial
analysis empowers L&R’s staff to spot potential problem areas long before
something goes wrong and they have to fix it.
10:50 – 11:10 am
The role of analytics in millennial recruitment
Speaker: Lance Melnik, IT Manager, Vesco Oil Corporation
Attracting and retaining new talent is a challenge for Vesco Oil Corporation,
as it is for many distributors. Lance will discuss the role analytics plays in the
company’s millennial recruitment strategy. He’ll also share specific examples
of how the company’s sales team has benefitted from an analytics solution,
and where he sees additional opportunities to leverage analytics for improved
business results (hint: one area is inventory control).

Revenue reporting: sales and trading profit
Speaker: Bob Hoff, Business Process Manager, Chase Plastics Services
The sales team at Chase Plastics Services has complete autonomy in pricing
products, and each sales territory is treated as a Profit Center. Having a strategic
analytics tool is essential for understanding the impact of decisions being made
in the field, particularly how these decisions impact revenue and profit goals.
Bob will share how the Sales team uses analytics to understand their Profit
Center, and how analytics help the Executive Staff monitor gains and losses
by customers, products, and suppliers, and track company performance at any
given point in time relative to the prior year—and to budget.
11:30 – 11:50 am
Executive insight: before and after analytics
Speaker: Joe Hampton, Director of Information Technology, Top Notch
Distributors
Having an analytics solution and mindset has been a game changer at Top
Notch Distributors—for executives and the IT team. Today, the company’s
executive team has an at-a-glance view of how the business is performing at
their fingertips, and financial analysts are empowered to build their own reports
and dashboards, freeing up the IT team to work on more strategic projects.
Joe will walk you through the before and after impact of analytics, and how he
sees analytics fitting into the challenges ahead (hint: building outside sales
capabilities).
12:00 – 1:00 pm
Lunch & Roundtable Discussion with Speakers
Host: Gary Owen, President, MITS
During lunch, Gary, Marc, Bob, Lance, and Joe will further explore the impact of
analytics on their business, and engage in dialogue with attendees.
1:00 – 2:00 pm
Driving analytics adoption: an interactive workshop
Host: Gary Owen, President, MITS
Analytics software is only successful if your users put it to use, and to its fullest
extent. Gary will lead a workshop on our method of identifying the drivers that
will ensure the biggest return on your investment in analytics. You will learn why
we believe “goals” are the most critical aspect to adoption and comprehensive
execution of an analytics solution.
