Description of curricular objectives—skills, content, and major themes:
Students will be able communicate with authentic language around the themes of Hispanic culture and
geography, weather and calendar, friends and activities, school, food and hobbies/interests. Students
will learn vocabulary, phrases and grammar structures to discuss these themes as well as cultural
perspectives related to each unit. Key topics such as numbers, calendar, weather, present tense verb
conjugations and likes/dislikes are reviewed throughout the units.
Students will be able to:
⁃ understand spoken Spanish and will be able to answer questions about listening passages.
⁃ have short, open-ended conversations (asking and answering questions)
⁃ read short passages and answer questions
⁃ write short paragraphs
⁃ compare and contrast their personal experiences and Jewish and American cultures with
those of Hispanic countries.
Students will have a better understanding of the Spanish language and of the Spanish-speaking world
and will make connections to prior knowledge and to the community around them. They will also
research Jewish populations in Latin America and learn about their history and culture in different
countries.

Major Papers / Projects / Learning Assessments: Each unit consists of at least one project-based
assessment as outlined above. Additional projects include the study of Jewish populations and other
cultural themes.
Homework Policy: All homework is due the day for which it is assigned. Homework correctly
completed on time is worth 10 points. Because we only meet 3x/week, homework completion and
practice outside the classroom is even more important. All assignments are posted on Haiku
Learning. If students are absent, they can check the website and can email with questions if needed.
How To Get Missed Work: Haiku Learning (email if needed); Make up policy: Please arrange a
time with me upon your arrive back to school. All make up work should be completed within a week
of returning.
