Part III: Making Inferences You will read a paragraph from The Giver and make an inference about
what is happening in the text. (I would start with looking at how the memories are described!)
An answer is derived through making inferences – drawing logical conclusions based on textual
evidence. This is like reading between the lines and searching for deeper or sometimes hidden
meaning (understood but not directly expressed.)
Example: “Three years…Three births, and that’s all. After that they are Laborers for the rest of their
adult lives, until the day they enter the House of the Old,” Explain what is revealed about the
Community from this quotation. What inferences can you make from it?
Part IV: Multiple Choice (Story elements, theme, symbolism, etc.). These questions are designed
to assess your understanding of the story as well as the “big ideas” presented in this text.
Part V: Characterization A new text will be provided so you can demonstrate your understanding of
how writers use diction to develop the characters of a text. You will read a passage and answer
EOG style questions.
