Seeing The Light
Ephesians 1:18-19 NIV: “I pray that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened in order that you may know the hope
to which He has called you, the riches of His glorious inheritance in His holy people and His incomparably great power
for us who believe.”
GROUP / PERSONAL STUDY:
It’s Christmas Season and one of the ways we celebrate Christmas is with all sorts of lights. We have lights
on our trees, on our rooftops, on our shrubs, on our wreaths, garlands, and mantels plus numerous candles
every place we can imagine. The stores and streets are decorated with lights and seeing all of these extra
lights plays a major role in bringing joy to our hearts during this time of year. However, we don’t want to miss
the significance of all of these lights, which are meant as a reminder of Jesus who is “The Light of the World.”
This week we’re focusing on what it means for us to actually “See The Light” in every way that God intended.
Read Ephesians 1:17-20:
1A) What did Paul pray for in Ephesians 1:17?
1B) What did he pray for in Ephesians 1:18? Why?
1C) What did Paul compare God’s power that can work in our lives to in verses 19-20?
1D) PERSONAL: What does it mean to you to know that God’s Power and Wisdom are available to His
followers?
Read John 8:12:
2) What did Jesus say about Himself and about His followers in this passage?
Read Acts 9:1-9:
3A) Saul was passionate about destroying the followers of Christ, but how did Jesus use “light” and
“seeing the light” in his conversion?
3B) PERSONAL: Why do you think all that happened to Saul was necessary for him to see the true light
of Jesus and to become passionate about others also “seeing the light?”
Read Matthew 5:14-16:
4) PERSONAL: How do you think this passage confirms that believers are to follow Jesus and do what
He did?
5) Discuss the different types of sight that we can have besides just physical sight that are important
for us to understand God’s Purpose for us, His provision for us, and His power that is at work within
our lives.
Read Ecclesiastes 3:1-11:
6) How does this passage confirm that God’s plan for all of us involves Time and Purpose?
ACT: Jesus is the Light of the world and His followers are to “see the light” and then through His power and
provision, we are to shine His light for others to see and understand His purpose for us, which is to bring Him
glory. We can do all things through Christ who strengthens us and who gives us hope. The Christmas Season
is a great time for us to focus on the true Light of Christ and to point others to it instead of focusing on the
artificial lights of the world.
Daily Devotional: It always helps to look at the context of the passage. Then try to answer the following
questions about the passage. Who is involved? What is going on? Where is the action taking place? When?
How can this concept apply to my life? Why is it important? Also look for Commands, Warnings, and Examples
to follow or not to follow.
• Every day read a passage about the light of Christ and how important it is for us to “see the light” and
acknowledge it!
Monday:
2 Samuel 22:29 NIV
You are my lamp, O Lord; The Lord turns my darkness into light.
Tuesday:
Psalm 27:1 NIV
The Lord is my light and my salvation – whom shall I fear? The Lord is the stronghold of my life – of whom shall I be
afraid?
Wednesday:
Isaiah 60:1-3 NASB
Rise up in splendor! Your light has come, the glory of the Lord shines upon you. See, darkness covers the earth, and
thick clouds cover the peoples; But upon you the LORD shines, and over you appears His glory. Nations shall walk by
your light, and kings by your shining radiance.
Thursday:
Luke 8:16-17 NLT
“No one lights a lamp and then covers it with a bowl or hides it under a bed. A lamp is placed on a stand, where its light
can be seen by all who enter the house. For all that is secret will eventually be brought into the open, and everything
that is concealed will be brought to light and made known to all.”
Friday:
John 1:1-9 NLT
In the beginning the Word already existed. The Word was with God, and the Word was God. He existed in the beginning
with God. God created everything through Him, and nothing was created except through Him. The Word gave life to
everything that was created, and His life brought light to everyone. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness
can never extinguish it. God sent a man, John the Baptist, to tell about the light so that everyone might believe
because of his testimony. John himself was not the light; he was simply a witness to tell about the light. The one who
is the true light, who gives light to everyone, was coming into the world.
Saturday:
John 3:19-21 NLT
“And the judgment is based on this fact: God’s light came into the world, but people loved the darkness more than the
light, for their actions were evil. All who do evil hate the light and refuse to go near it for fear their sins will be exposed.
But those who do what is right come to the light so others can see that they are doing what God wants.”
Sunday:
2 Corinthians 4:6 NIV
For God, who said, “Let light shine out of darkness,” made His light shine in our hearts to give us the light of the
knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Christ.
