YEAR 6 – TERMLY INFORMATION FOR PARENTS: TERMS 3 AND 4

Maths
Science
This term we will be focusing on writing play scripts,
instructions and explanations. We will be studying the
key texts: The firework Maker’s Daughter and The
Willow Tree Pattern to look at narratives and
adventure stories. We will use these texts to support
our own writing of narratives and nonfiction texts.
In our grammar, punctuation and spelling we will be
focusing on antonyms, synonyms, modal verbs and
prepositions.
Ideas to help at home:
When reading through stories at home, encourage your
child to identify and talk about the description used by
the writer. Encourage them to think about what effect
this description has on them as the reader.
When reading non-fiction texts at home, encourage
your child to identify the different parts of the text such
as sub-headings, diagrams and captions.
This term we will be developing our knowledge and
understanding of geometry, including properties of 2D
and 3D shapes. Developing our understanding of basic
algebra, area and volume as well as statistics. We will
continue to develop our skills to apply all four operations
in a variety of contexts, including ratio and proportion.
We will also be improving our core maths skills such as
times table knowledge and mental maths fluency, also
position and direction.
Ideas to help at home:
It is essential that your child has a secure knowledge of
all times tables. Both multiplication and division facts
should be practised so that your child can recall their
times tables with speed and accuracy. If you child knows
all of their times tables, challenge them to multiply and
divide decimals amounts
In science in Term 3 and 4 we will be learning about All
Living Things and then Evolution and Inheritance, which
will draw on our understanding from previous learning
and extend our knowledge, skills and understanding
further.
In particular, we shall be developing our understanding
of classification of living things including microorganisms, animals and plants. Also we shall explore
how fossils provide information about living things that
once inhabited the Earth.

Throughout this term, our foundation subject learning
shall be linked to our class topic which is ‘Beyond the
Great Wall’
Our topic launch this term will be the children working
in role as archaeologists.
During this term we shall:
 Explore when and where the Shang dynasty was in
existence and describe features of its location.
 Explain some of the religious beliefs and practices
of the people from the Shang dynasty.
 Examine a range of artefacts to find out about life
in the Shang dynasty
 Explore Shang Dynasty artifacts to design our own
 Create a Shang Dynasty artifact using clay
Ideas to help at home:
Research the Shang dynasty. Collect your information
in a scrap book. Take a visit to your local library and
read more about our topics.
Ideas to help at home:
Ask your child about their Science learning. Together try
to explore your family tree and research their family
heritage.
Beyond the Great Wall!
This term, the focus will be on Jesus and his followers;
Our theme for the next 2 terms is based
exploring the qualities of a good friend and the
around The Shang and other Chinese dynasties. influence of his teaching in our own friendships.
A focus will be on The Shang dynasty,
Buddhism, the creation of the Great Wall of
China as well as the development of industries
in China.

Homework
Your child shall be given a Maths homework book, and
English homework book.
Each week they shall be given one piece of Maths and
English homework linked to their learning.
Link Books
We expect that pupils will read at home, either
independently or to an adult. If your child does read
independently please ask them questions about what
they have read.

Swimming and Gymnastics
Year 6 will continue with their swimming lessons on
Wednesdays next term - please ensure that the children
bring the equipment they need.
Gymnastics will be every Friday afternoon.
