RRE/RRE4 Remote Reader Electronics
Features
Figure 1. APOGEE Security Technologies’ remote reader
electronics, RRE4 (left) and RRE (right).
Description
Utilization of two stage access control readers with
the ACU2 networked intelligent controller is
accomplished using the RRE series of remote card
reader interfaces.
Two basic versions of the RRE are available, the
standard RRE single card reader controller, and the
RRE4, which provides control for up to four card
readers.
Both versions have facilities to interface keypads,
door alarms and request to exit devices, and provide
5 volt, 12 volt and 24 volt outputs to power card
readers, Request to Exit (REX) devices and door
strikes.

Configurations
Reader Architecture
The ACU2 offers the flexibility of reader interface
electronics installation in three different
configurations. The reader electronics can be
integrated in the card reader housing, with a
membrane keypad and installed directly adjacent to
the door. This is called a single stage reader. If the
read head required does not allow such a
configuration, as is the case for certain proximity
readers or certain types of Wiegand, magnetic stripe,
and bar code readers, or the customer prefers a two
stage reader configuration, an RRE (Remote Reader
Electronics) unit, can be installed. This can either be
a single reader RRE mounted above the door and
interfaced to the read head, or a four reader RRE4
mounted either in an REN enclosure local to the
ACU2 or at some convenient remote point in the
system with the read heads, keypads, alarm points
and door strikes connected to it from all four door
locations.

Each of these configurations also offers the choice of
controlling the door lock from a relay at the RRE or
RRE4, or using a separate relay at the ACU2 or a
relay on a conveniently located Remote Relay Module
(RRM). Similarly, alarm inputs from the door may
also be configured to an input on the ACU2 or on a
convenient remote input module (RIM).
